bly was born in pennsylvania in 1864.

when she was 21 bly trolled the author

of a sexist article in the pittsburgh

dispatch

her writing was so good the editor

offered her a job

but writing puff pieces about fashion

and gardening wasn't enough for black

so in 1887 she took a bite out of the

big apple

her first assignment at the new york

world was to report on conditions at the

women's lunatic asylum on black wells

island

she had to pretend to be insane to get

in and did such a good job

she fooled everyone what she wrote went

viral

changing how institutions are run

forever

it gave her major profile inspired by

the book

around the world in 80 days bly set sail

from new jersey in 1889

to show everyone that a woman could beat

that time on her own

she wrote about the country she visited

and the things she saw in true travel

and returned home a record breaker after

just 72 days
