0:00

everyone kevin here so here's a complete breakdown of what we learned

0:03

from the tesla earnings call so it's a summary of it the first elon musk came

0:08

out talked about uh the highest demand that

0:11

we have ever seen for vehicles at a tesla that

0:15

the model 3 at tesla is on pace to produce 250

0:19

000 vehicles uh current well it's actually producing 250

0:23

000 vehicles at its current rate and its rate will be at 500

0:28

000 model 3s per year next year so that rate of production from model 3s

0:34

is expected to double the model 3 currently one of the best or

0:38

actually the best selling uh premium sedan in the world

0:43

but expecting the model y elon said this to become the best selling vehicle of

0:49

any time next year but more likely by 2023

0:53

beating all other cars or trucks great progress on

0:57

a full self-driving we'll talk more about that later elon talked about some

1:00

of the challenges about how you need a very powerful computer

1:03

using only 70 to 80 watts talked about the how important of a step it is to

1:09

eliminate the crutch of having radar as a tool that you use to sort of

1:13

back up your uh visual or vision systems

1:17

in the autonomous systems so elon wants a superhuman

1:21

stereo video autonomous system that can basically look at eight cameras

1:27

35 frames per second data all at the same time and then with

1:32

context of all the cameras coming together at the

1:34

same time be able to label what's going on surrounding the vehicle and make

1:38

decisions without the use of a radar or certainly

1:42

lidar the word lidar wasn't even mentioned

1:44

once on the call he talked a little bit about some difficulties regarding this

1:48

also talked about some of the difficulties regarding the model s and x

1:52

about how there were more challenges than expected remember they're

1:55

completely tearing out the inside redoing the inside they're doing the new

1:58

battery new drive units new internal electronics playstation 5

2:02

level infotainment system and that they've had lots of issues the

2:07

elon musk also touched on and i thought this was a

2:09

little bit weird but basically what they're doing is

2:11

because they're not done with some of the s and x's the first ones that

2:14

they're producing are probably the new model s's they're

2:17

kind of backing them into the yard and then putting them back into the factory

2:20

to kind of keep making modifications to them i have to say that struck me as

2:24

a little odd their goal is to produce uh 2000 s and

2:28

x's per week potentially as high as 224 to

2:32

2500 s and x's and that these when they are done

2:35

will be superior vehicles and they expect to get to volume

2:40

uh soon they expect to start deliveries next month of the s

2:43

the x will come later with new deliveries and uh that they hope to get

2:47

to full volume on the snx by next year that puts them on pace for somewhere

2:52

around uh let's see if we do two 52 weeks times uh

2:55

2000 that puts us around 100 4 000 vehicles uh on the low side per

3:00

year for s and x's that'll certainly help the average of vehicle

3:05

selling prices go up substantially and on the high side we expect

3:10

potentially as many as 130 000 s and x's to be produced and built

3:16

on a financials obviously there was a big impact

3:20

on profits the big line here so that you can do some math was that

3:24

200 million dollars of extra loss was baked into quarter one revenue

3:30

or quarter one expenses into their costs of goods solds and

3:34

automotive revenues or i'm sorry automotive expenditures due to the s x

3:39

re-ramp the retooling cost 200 million dollars

3:43

and that's not even to mention the lack of revenue

3:46

and despite this automotive gross margins still went up so in my opinion

3:50

that's really good news but tesla after hours after this

3:52

earnings call is settling down about 1.3 i'm sorry

3:55

2.33 percent uh most folks not too excited about how the earnings call went

4:01

though this particularly in my opinion was a very strong

4:04

moment here uh and uh the candlesticks did start agreeing

4:08

uh at uh at the time of this reveal as well uh they also indicated that

4:12

research and development expenses increased because of their continued

4:15

development on the 4680 cells the new battery packs

4:19

artificial intelligence and the s and x retooling so it looks like you've got

4:22

some operating expenses going into the snx

4:25

process itself like the the factory line retooling but

4:28

then also our research and development expenses going into the snx so a lot of

4:32

extra expenses here they talked about trimming about 10 off

4:36

their bitcoin position but they talked about how they do plan

4:39

to still invest in bitcoin for the long run and

4:42

convert uh more of their vehicle purchases from

4:45

bitcoin into uh bitcoin that they hold for the long

4:48

run they did sell 10 they said that this was just for

4:52

liquidity purposes that they want something that they can easily buy and

4:55

sell through on the dojo supercomputer elon musk went

5:00

into a very detailed explanation here and i kind of

5:03

gave you a little summary already with that eight camera

5:05

simultaneous labeling that's where they want to get to in the future

5:09

remember we've done this before on this channel you know those matterport 3d

5:12

scans that i show you on this channel i love matterport i love the technology

5:16

metaport does this as well where they scan a place and then their artificial

5:20

intelligence starts automatically labeling oh okay i think this is a smoke

5:24

detector oh that's a door okay that's this or whatever that's

5:27

going to be huge for insurance purposes right public company ghvi

5:30

well it's a smack merger but anyway elon is trying to do this

5:34

on the fly so like in real time as a car is moving and then have a

5:40

system be able to automatically label okay that's a kayak on top of a car

5:44

that's a truck on top of another truck and be

5:47

able to label these things but these things are

5:49

challenging and so we gave some examples about how basically they're writing the

5:53

software that's trying to start auto labeling and

5:56

that trainers then go through and fact check no that's

5:58

not a donkey that's a car or whatever and then when they make

6:02

those edits they actually help train the system even more

6:05

but basically they expect that dojo in the future could potentially even be

6:08

used by others but keep in mind we did see toyota bail

6:12

on that rumor that we saw a few months ago that

6:15

toyota might want to partner with tesla to use tesla's autonomy system

6:20

but recently bailed on that my assumption they bailed on that tesla

6:23

talk because the toyota instead today bought

6:27

lyft's self-driving uh products which i didn't even know that lyft had a

6:31

self-driving product on solar roof they say that demand is

6:35

still in excess of uh what they can produce there was some uh there

6:39

was a question about why is it that people are getting

6:41

much you know being asked to basically pay double for the roof

6:44

elon musk kind of talked this up as uh being uh

6:48

more of an issue with people's roofs that elon's going or the you know the

6:51

staff's going to a roof and they're like come on man like your roof is totally

6:54

rotted out it's going to cost twice as much to do

6:56

this keep in mind i have had this experience with tesla myself not on the

7:00

solar roof but on the solar panels basically i asked for a panel they come

7:04

out and the roof in my opinion looks fine not leaking i've had my roof

7:07

certified by licensed roofers they do tune-ups on my rental properties tesla

7:12

will go out and go you know this is we just don't want to put a

7:14

20-year solar panel on this roof we want you to replace the roof or we want you

7:18

to replace half the roof or whatever and then they give me a fat sort of

7:21

contractor estimate that they can they can subcontract to tesla probably

7:25

get some some decent amount of profit from doing that

7:28

by you know taking a little bit of a spread between for that referral purpose

7:32

but uh yeah that is uh that's been a common issue with with tesla is you kind

7:36

of getting the uh uh the uh up charge a bill from the

7:39

contractors but that is the nature of construction as

7:42

well so on one hand i don't blame them i mean they don't want to get suckered

7:45

into uh you know putting their panels or even

7:48

solar roof on top of crap lumber or whatever

7:51

but um and on the retrofit panels they put a 20-year

7:55

panel on you know a roof that only has five years left uh you know i get it

7:58

that could create some problems anyway in those cases elon musk says

8:02

they just refund deposits okay fine a big thing about the solar

8:06

discussion though was uh about simplifying the installation of a

8:10

solar panels and so this was a little tricky i'm gonna make this as simple as

8:13

possible and honestly i think the easiest way to

8:17

explain the uh what elon musk is talking about

8:20

when it comes to the the why elon musk wants

8:25

the solar battery pack included in the solar system

8:28

is just by doing a very quick rudimentary explanation here

8:32

so generally if somebody wants solar panels on the roof

8:36

and they have a main circuit panel over here and you want to add

8:40

solar panels on the roof you're going to have something known as an inverter that

8:43

gets installed and then generally you need a few

8:46

breakers free in the panel which when you need a few breakers free

8:49

in the panel to power that or to connect with that inverter

8:53

you have to do a lot of rewiring inside of that main panel

8:56

and so what they're doing instead is saying well if we have a power wall

9:00

and we install a power wall so we'll just go ahead and put pw here for

9:04

powerwall well we're going to have an actual

9:07

panel over here for the for the power wall and what we're going to do is we're

9:11

just going to feed all of the circuits that are supposed to

9:14

be backed up by the uh that are that are wiring

9:18

through this panel we're going to splice off those go into

9:21

this sub panel and then the power wall is going to go

9:24

over here so all of a sudden you have a very very simple way

9:28

to install solar where you don't have to screw around with rewiring the panel

9:32

because you're trying to jam some new breakers in there

9:34

what you're really doing is you're just routing off of the main

9:38

into this new sub panel and letting the power wall feed

9:41

those circuits keep in mind the power wall does not have to feed

9:44

every single circuit in the house just whatever circuits either

9:48

the system was designed for so that's my overly simplifying not an electrician

9:53

here understanding of a simplified uh you know

9:58

explanation here on on what's going on so in other words

10:02

uh elon musk is basically saying look it's much easier for us to install the

10:06

power walls on every solar system on top of that we make much more money

10:10

and that's also a very good motivation now elon musk did give a

10:13

long-winded explanation about how having batteries and houses is actually really

10:17

important because people are using more

10:19

electricity because they have electric vehicles now

10:21

and we have bad weather that can cause more issues and more outages and more

10:24

strain on systems basically elon musk is saying yo we

10:30

putting power walls in now with our solar panels like it or not okay is that

10:33

freaking simple all right we already talked about the

10:35

coin no new announcements on like dogecoin or whatever

10:39

all right then we get to this this crash in texas okay this crash in texas folks

10:43

this was this explanation was the most garbage explanation they could

10:50

have possibly come up with but i think we have a conclusion here as

10:53

to what roughly they said so uh and i tweeted this as

10:58

well so roughly our understanding is that

11:01

auto steer which is basically autopilot when you don't have the full

11:05

self-driving auto steer would have only accelerated

11:09

on the road where the accident happened to 30 miles per hour this implies given

11:14

that the car burst into flames which you do not expect to happen at 35 mile or 30

11:18

miles an hour this implies the car was not on auto

11:21

steer so it probably means somebody launched the car like let's go zero to

11:25

60 let's go because again remember what i said with that

11:28

fiery crash i'm expecting it to reveal that this car

11:31

was going at least 50 to 60 miles an hour

11:34

if not even 70 to 80 miles an hour but at least 56 so when i had 30 i initially

11:39

got a little concerned uh confused uh we re-listened and

11:43

re-thought about what was said uh and uh so that's where the 30 mile an

11:46

hour limitation come from uh so this does imply that the car was

11:49

traveling faster without auto steer on we did not get an

11:53

indication of the speed of the crash and that seat belts were found to be

11:57

unbuckled now we do not know if the seat belts were unbuckled

12:00

at the beginning of when they started driving or if

12:03

uh if the seat belts were unbuckled after the crash we do not know that

12:07

the seat belts were just found unbuckled however there is an indication due to a

12:11

deformed steering wheel that somebody was in the driver's seat

12:14

at the time of the crash which and think about it if somebody was in

12:17

the driver's seat at the time of the crash and let's say they were unbuckled

12:20

uh you would you would probably have a lot of mass going into that steering

12:24

wheel leading to some deformant now you would

12:26

expect the airbag to go off so so i don't i don't know the mechanics

12:29

of airbag verse body going into airbag versus still

12:33

deforming the steering wheel i don't know obviously i would expect the

12:37

deforming of the steering wheel to be a lot worse

12:39

if the person was not buckled up obviously but we don't have that answer

12:45

and they did mention that the sd card uh

12:48

which does record data on the car was not able

12:52

to be recovered however it is uh they are

12:56

working on trying to recover data from that sd card

12:59

then we've got on 4680s uh they they dispelled some rumors about vampire

13:04

drain uh they talked about how lithium iron

13:09

batter lithium ion batteries are only really

13:11

one to two percent lithium and that there's no shortage of iron

13:15

phosphate lithium batteries iron phosphate batteries are

13:19

the cheaper ones the 4680 ones are the or the um the iron phosphate ones are

13:23

the ones being manufactured in china a lot of the teslas

13:26

have those the 4680s are the new structural batteries and those are the

13:29

ones that they're trying to ramp they're really expecting to get to

13:32

volume production next year on the 4680s but they do think well

13:36

actually yeah that redirects they do expect it's going to be 12 to 18 months

13:40

which again does align with next year they are aiming for comparable

13:44

margins this was a big one comparable margins

13:47

in storage as they are in a vehicle which is great because vehicle

13:52

margins they're aiming for 30 but elon musk mentions like mega packs

13:56

power walls and we're nowhere near scale yet

13:58

but we are expecting margins to eventually

14:02

approach what the vehicle manufacturing margins are which that's 20 to 30

14:06

percent honestly that's a lot higher than the margins that i had been giving

14:08

for energy so i think that's great however i expect

14:11

that to decline as they continue to do solar panel installs

14:14

because solar panel installs are low margin but the batteries are higher

14:18

margin on full self driving a subscription

14:20

still working on it maybe they'll do recurring revenue in

14:23

the future but too soon to make any announcements on the conference call

14:28

on getting to a 25 000 vehicle uh elon musk mentions and the other staff

14:33

mentions look there are many things we can do

14:35

uh reducing the amounts of pieces that go into a car

14:38

obviously streamlining the pieces that are used in conjunction between all the

14:42

different cars continue to find cost reduction scale uh

14:45

the volume of having four factories building the same vehicles all that

14:48

helps and on berlin and austin ramp we'll get

14:52

there no real news here i think the big

14:54

takeaway from what we got from tesla today was really

14:58

no news unfortunately a lot of today was uh no news a big no news day for

15:03

tesla not so great it's kind of more of a like

15:06

a hurry up in weight and i think that's why we're seeing some negativity in the

15:09

stock especially with that average selling

15:11

price declining as the s x's aren't being produced obviously when

15:15

you take very expensive cars like 80 to 100

15:17

000 cars out of your product mix your average selling price will naturally

15:21

decline so uh there you go there you have a

15:24

complete summary of what the heck happened in the earnings

15:28

call as well as a little bit with the earnings
