are looking at the universe of honing stones. All right I'm gonna walk you
through my journey on this and there were some pitfalls and there is still
some places to go from here. As a matter of fact this is not the end of the
journey this is just the beginning, and we will keep going with this and it will
keep evolving into where we need to be alright.
But let me tell you this is not the end. Now at the end of this video though I
have got a bonus for you. A stone you've never seen on this channel and it's
pretty interesting. I'm looking forward to using it at some time in the future,
but I wanted to debut it tonight. So let's look at honing stone starting
right now! Number one get a stone holder alright now this is adjustable that can
move to fit any stone and it can support any stone from five and a half inches to
nine inches long really works well now all of these stones come with some kind
of stone holder at least all the ones I have
in the beginning and they are okay but this gives you so much more control and
it is totally worth it all right you can pick up something like this one Amazon
for 15 bucks with Free Shipping you can't go wrong with that
and it's adjustable you can use it on every stone you have really good deal
number two if you're really serious about maintaining your straight razor
honing it and taking care of it all yourself you are going to need a
flattening stone for your honing stones now this is a Norton flat main stone and
it's got these grooves now what happens is as you're flattening the stone the
excess from the stone you're working on can go in those grooves and help keep it
flatter now one of the issues with this is it's hard to keep this flat but you
could use this if you would like this is what I started with this is not what I
would recommend you pick up something like this on Amazon for like thirty nine
bucks with Free Shipping and if that works for you you can do it next I've
got my DMT and this is the d8 see this is a coarse diamond plate this is four
years old alright and this is steel so this stays
flat all the time now one of the reasons why I would go with something like this
it is it is bigger than the stone now you see that that to me is important if
I'm trying to flatten this you need to have that stone be about the
same size as the flattening stone and if you do that you'll be able to flatten
that stone in you can get it nice and flat all the way around with this
diamond plate this is a big ol 3 by 9 inch diamond plate and it's really good
works out quite nicely and you can pick up something like this on Amazon for 50
bucks with Free Shipping and you can't go wrong with that and if I was going to
recommend something it would be this one now to my first set of homes number one
this is a seadoo 600-1000 this is a bevel setter and it does a fine job now
you can use something like this and it'll work really well for you and it's
not that expensive this is like 20 bucks and it's on Amazon with free shipping as
well you can't go wrong with that but I have another choice coming up later in
the video that I would recommend over this number 2 might a tie and this is
the three thousand eight thousand stone now this is where the honing really
begins on a honing progression now you could start with the three thousand and
get that in there really good get up to the eight thousand and continue on with
your honing progressions and now this is an inexpensive stone again both this one
and the one before are a little smaller then what I
like to use but it works fine you can pick up something like this on
the Amazon for 20 bucks as well with free shipping in not a bad price for
this stone I do have another stone later that I will suggest over this and I
think it would be a better fit number three this is my way way and that's a
ten thousand grit stone works really well and this will help get a nice
polish on your razor on that edge and does a really good job these are like 28
bucks on Amazon with Free Shipping and it's a pretty good deal you can do all
right with this one number for my Shapton 12 K this is a M 512k ceramic
stone the m5 has got to do with this yellow bit that is where that comes from
now this has been an excellent stone captain I believe makes some really good
stones now this actually you could pick up on eBay for $79 with $15 shipping now
this does polish up that razor nicely and would be a good buy number five
there you go this is my metal master and that is a 15 K stone now I wasn't able
to find these but I was looking back in my records I think this was about 85
bucks and this came from Japan and it has it's a nice soft stone so it is
self-cleaning and use this side with the spots on it to home this side you don't
hold on this side you want a home on the side with the spots
this really does a bang-up job and puts a like light saber edge on a
straight razor really good now you could pick up one of these but
it is a little bit more expensive and I have an alternative
later on that I will show you going through my first set of stones the
sea-doo 600 to 1,000 20 bucks USD free shipping number two the tight daya three
thousand eight thousand stone is 20 bucks with Free Shipping the way way is
a 10,000 grit stone and it is 28 bucks free shipping now the shaft and in five
ceramic 12 K stone I can pick that up for $79 plus $15 shipping to finish off
my first set of stones the metal master it is a 15 K Japanese stone and it is
$85 for a grand total of two hundred and forty-seven dollars with shipping next
my new set of homes starting with number one my su héroe this is a 1000 3000
stone so you can actually set the ballot form the 1000 side and then start
working on the progression of your home on the 3000 side now this is a brilliant
stone because it is soft so as you're honing it will clean itself off and does
a really fine job on setting the bevel with the blue side and starting the
honing progression with the yellow side you can pick up one of these for $36 USD
with free shipping and it is a fine stone I would recommend
if you're wanting to set your own belt number two the Shapton 8k this is a
ceramic stone it does a fine job and as you see this one is the same color all
the way through so it is going to last even longer than the Shapton in 512k now
with this you will be able to get a really nice polish on that razor and
it's a wonderful maintenance stone as well this would be a good place for you
to start these are $64 and that is with free shipping I would definitely
recommend a Shapton 8 K ceramic stone if you're wanting to home number three the
Imperial LaRocca and this is a beautiful 3 by 8 inch stone this is the premium
version they do have other versions that are just standard but look at that in
that beautiful now I do most of my honing on this side I've got a really
flat and really smooth now I use this with the dr. Matt under the running
water technique works really well and puts a excellent edge on a stone now
this also came with a matching nagira stone and this is you're supposed to rub
it on to get a slurry never really used it I do the running water technique and
it puts a fantastic edge on a razor now the difference between the ILR and the
metal master 15 this is going to give you a light saber edge on a razor
and this is going to give you a sharp comfortable razor so if I was going to
recommend anything to you it would be the Imperial LaRocca and you could pick
up this one eBay for 130 bucks with eight bucks shipping and it's just a
fantastic stone and you will have a fantastic shave here's a rundown on my
new set of homes the su héroe 1000 3000 combo stone is thirty-six bucks USD with
free shipping then you have the shaft and eight K ceramic stone that is $64
with free shipping and then you have the Imperial LaRocca it is a 12 to 15 K
stone for 130 dollars plus 8 bucks shipping for a grand total of 238 5 that
means if you get these three stones you'll be able to set the bevel maintain
your razor in everything with these three this would be a bargain this is
less expensive than my first set of stones now if I could only have one set
of stones to maintain my straight razor I would start with the Shapton 8 K
ceramic stone yes I would this is where he needs to start if
you're just trying to maintain your razor this would be a fantastic stone to
use and it is just right in that sweet spot where you don't need to set the
buffing but this will realign that edge and really start a nice polish on
you can pick up this on Amazon for like 64 bucks with Free Shipping and that is
an excellent price number two then move to that Imperial LaRocca for a finishing
stone this is a 12 to 15 K finishing stone does a bang-up job that is so flat
so smooth and it puts such a beautiful edge one eraser you can't beat that in
I'm telling you you have a sharp razor but it's really comfortable and you can
pick this up on eBay for a hundred and thirty bucks plus eight dollars shipping
and that is really a good price for this now I do know they have standard version
of a ILR as well for less money if that is something you need to consider now
for the rundown on this number one the Shapton 8 K ceramic stone is $64 u.s.
free shipping in the Imperial LaRocca 12 to 15 K premium stone is a hundred and
thirty dollars plus eight dollars shipping for a grand total of 200 and
$2.00 and I'm telling you you can't touch any kind of other stones for that
kind of money if I can only have one set of stones to maintain my straight razor
it would be the shaft in a K and the Imperial LaRocca 12 to 15 K finishing
stone this is all you really need and you will have a fantastic edge now if
you're new the straight razor shaving and honing I would go with a natural
finisher you're going to get a much smoother shave the synthetic stones will
be sharper I mean like laser sharp they will be like
lightsabers okay and that makes them more dangerous and less comfortable go
with a natural stone edge for a finisher and you will have a much more
comfortable shape and in what I've shown you in this video actually you can get
high quality stones and you don't need that many of them and it's not that
expensive so don't waste your money on less expensive stones unless that's what
you need to do now if you can only have one set of homes to maintain your
straight razor what would you pick let us know down in the comments could be
very interesting I really am looking forward to all your comments and answers
to that one now for a quick sneak peek here you go look at that in that
beautiful that is a Japanese natural stone I don't know what kind I don't
know really that much about it I bought this like three or four years
ago before I knew anything and if you know what that stone is or can give me
an idea that would be great it is very thin so I will be taking this epoch
seeing this two piece of wood I believe and we'll start honing with this and see
how it does and find out where it fits in the progression so stay tuned for
that there is really a universe of different stones out there that you can
try and some of them are really expensive I got this one at a pretty
good price and it's because it was so thin click up here to see five days of
straight razor shaves could be interesting we're doing like a pass and
a half in those now I give my ideas for these straight razor edge Friday
