0:03

wealth

0:03

the coupon code to the moon expires on

0:06

may 31st

0:07

so make sure to take advantage of that

0:09

before the large price increase coming

0:11

on

0:11

june 1st now let's get into the topic

0:14

folks

0:14

san jose my goodness another shooting

0:17

and more people dead this is an absolute

0:21

tragedy

0:22

and the san jose shooting has shown a

0:24

new spotlight

0:26

on gun violence in america but also

0:30

society in general how do we solve these

0:33

issues let's talk but first we have to

0:36

understand that there is a lot missing

0:38

when it comes to the shooting that

0:40

happened in san

0:41

jose first of all the police have still

0:43

not released any details as to whether

0:46

or not the shooter's weapons

0:47

were legally owned or not legally owned

0:49

and there's still larger motive issues

0:51

at play which

0:52

i'm sure will become more clear over

0:54

time so this video isn't

0:55

going to specifically be about the

0:58

details that we know about the san jose

1:00

shooting and what we don't know

1:01

because those facts will come out to

1:04

light within the next few weeks

1:05

hopefully and we'll learn more and we'll

1:07

sort of be able to revise our opinions

1:09

but this san jose issue is casting a

1:12

bigger spotlight on a larger issue in

1:15

our society

1:16

and it's a very fragmented issue one

1:19

that

1:19

takes a very strong foothold in politics

1:23

let me start by pointing this out as an

1:26

example

1:27

and then we'll refer to some actual

1:29

statistics that we're seeing

1:31

take a look at this gavin newsom the

1:34

governor of

1:35

california who is running in a contested

1:37

recall election

1:39

said yesterday wake up to the reality

1:42

and take a little damn responsibility

1:44

all of us in society he says he says we

1:47

must

1:48

move beyond the platitudes and usual

1:50

rhetoric

1:51

that tends to mark not just these

1:53

moments but the aftermath of these

1:55

moments

1:56

in other words he's saying all we do is

1:58

talk about solving the problem

2:00

and we don't actually solve the problem

2:01

now we know that governor newsom is also

2:04

allies with joe biden and joe biden also

2:07

yesterday came out and talked about how

2:08

important

2:09

gun control measures are and

2:12

we also had newsome on twitter yesterday

2:15

say we need to deal with the pandemic

2:17

before the pandemic

2:19

that is gun violence so both newsom

2:22

and ryden are targeting guns

2:25

as the simplified solution to gun

2:28

violence in the country

2:29

and now i responded to this call for

2:33

time to move past the stale rhetoric and

2:35

thoughts and prayers and pass common

2:37

sense gun laws

2:38

nationwide that's a recommendation from

2:40

governor newsom now i responded this and

2:42

said

2:42

why didn't you deal with this before the

2:45

pandemic you are

2:46

governor of california and you have a

2:48

super majority control in california if

2:50

you wanted to make changes you

2:51

have the power to make changes well

2:53

here's what we're finding

2:54

myself and my research team this morning

2:56

revisited a lot of research that we've

2:58

looked into in the past and even added

3:00

more research

3:01

and we're finding that this gun violence

3:05

issue

3:05

in our society is so complicated because

3:08

the solution that liberals provide

3:11

is guns are bad therefore guns must be

3:14

banned

3:15

the solution that conservatives provide

3:17

is that people who are mentally ill

3:19

should be screened and therefore should

3:21

not be able to own guns

3:24

this a both of these are actually very

3:27

overly simplistic solutions to what in

3:30

reality is a very

3:32

very massive and complicated societal

3:34

issue

3:35

see we know that there are links to gun

3:38

violence

3:40

when we consider mental health but there

3:42

are also

3:43

links to educational shortfalls

3:47

to loneliness to a lack

3:50

of proper relationship building or

3:53

proper relationships a lack of

3:55

compassion

3:56

or there are even links to crime and

3:59

poverty

4:00

and so when we step back for a moment we

4:02

go wait a minute wait a minute

4:03

the issue of that we have in our society

4:07

which is expressed via the symptom of

4:09

gun violence

4:11

maybe isn't one thing as simple as

4:14

mental health screening or as simple as

4:17

ban guns

4:18

it's actually much more deep it's much

4:20

more complicated and massive and

4:22

what i want to do in this is just show

4:24

you an example of how complicated

4:26

just one of these parts are so we

4:29

already

4:29

know that there are clear links between

4:32

poverty and an increase

4:33

in violent crime for example if you are

4:36

in poverty you are twice as likely to be

4:39

involved in violent crime than somebody

4:40

who is not in poverty we know these

4:42

statistics exist we have more

4:45

complicated statistics for

4:46

loneliness and educational shortfalls

4:49

there are

4:50

massive links between wealth and

4:52

inequality

4:53

and race between gun violence and and

4:56

what happens in our country so

4:57

there are many many many many issues and

5:00

this video is not an attempt to address

5:01

every single issue

5:02

but i want to show how just complicated

5:06

one issue or out of all of these issues

5:09

can get

5:10

so remember how i said that liberals

5:12

like to say oh

5:13

guns are bad banned guns and

5:15

conservatives like to say well

5:16

we just need mental health screening and

5:18

that way folks with mental health

5:19

problems

5:20

don't have access to guns and there you

5:21

go then you solve the problem

5:24

okay well let's look into this a little

5:26

bit so this morning

5:28

we dug up some of our existing research

5:30

because we've been researching the

5:32

health crisis and health emergency in

5:34

our country particularly

5:35

in the state of california for a very

5:37

very long time

5:38

specifically because i'm also running

5:40

for governor in california if you want

5:42

to see my plan

5:43

you can go to meet kevin.com and learn a

5:45

lot more but

5:47

let's talk about this for a moment

5:49

mental health

5:50

is stigmatized in our country nobody

5:53

wants to admit that they go to therapy

5:56

nobody wants to admit

5:57

that they need professional help even

6:00

just the thought that therapy is a form

6:02

of professional help

6:03

is actually not a good thing like you

6:05

would think that it's

6:07

almost better to say hey i'm going to a

6:09

doctor to solve my problem but that

6:11

means you have a severe problem so it

6:12

actually

6:13

further stigmatizes the problem and so

6:16

this

6:16

sometimes turns into folks

6:18

oversimplifying what therapy is is

6:20

always

6:20

i just go weekly to talk it's kind of

6:22

like my weekly run my weekly exercise

6:24

what there's there's a lot of

6:25

defensiveness

6:26

and stigmatization of therapy and really

6:29

what therapy

6:30

could be used for and that leads to

6:33

what we have in our schools a complete

6:36

lack of education around mental health

6:38

let me ask you this we don't learn

6:40

financial education in high school we

6:42

know that

6:42

but guess what else we don't learn

6:44

compassion

6:46

and mental health we also don't learn

6:48

the importance of

6:50

mental health therapy sometimes some of

6:52

us are lucky enough to maybe

6:53

have a physical education class in high

6:55

school uh or play sports

6:57

maybe we'll learn about the importance

6:58

of nutrition and maybe somebody will

7:00

teach us the difference between

7:02

uh the balance of omega-3 fatty acids

7:04

and omega-6 fatty acids and

7:06

how omega-9s can play into that ratio or

7:09

not

7:09

those might be things that we're taught

7:11

but we're never taught about mental

7:12

health and

7:13

certainly we're never destigmatized

7:16

around

7:16

mental health education or mental health

7:19

support

7:20

but as soon as we hear mental health

7:21

support it's like oh somebody's mental

7:22

that's bad right

7:24

and so oftentimes what happens with

7:25

these violent shootings that we have or

7:27

violent incidences

7:28

throughout our country is we get a very

7:30

simplistic take from the media

7:32

oh well they must have been mental or up

7:34

we need more gun control

7:37

well here's why mental health gets even

7:39

more complicated see it's not just

7:41

a lack of education or the

7:43

stigmatization of mental health which

7:45

the media can perpetuate i mean think

7:47

about it if the media on one hand is

7:49

saying

7:50

oh mental health is the problem that's

7:51

why we have shootings then that makes

7:53

more people hate mental health because

7:55

then mental health is associated with

7:56

taking away your guns

7:58

right so it's like oh keep mental health

8:00

patients away from guns because they're

8:01

obviously the problem

8:03

when the problem is much more than that

8:05

see let's for example just think about

8:07

the treatment

8:08

of mental health in our country for a

8:10

moment well so let's go into some

8:11

statistics

8:12

the reality in our country is that half

8:14

of therapists do not accept insurance

8:17

this leads some to believe that maybe

8:19

those who have already built up their

8:20

patient book

8:21

decide to cut insurance out and so

8:23

therefore maybe the more experienced

8:26

therapists or potentially people who

8:27

have more experience but don't accept

8:29

insurance

8:30

and that's because health insurance

8:31

networks tend to pay 60 to 80

8:33

per therapy session but the going rate

8:36

in california for example is 150 to

8:38

200 dollars and this is using a

8:40

california number the 150 to 200.

8:42

medi-cal guess what medi-cal pays 70

8:46

that is right in the middle of what

8:48

generally networks pay 60-80 dollars per

8:50

session

8:51

but it's not just that because health

8:53

insurance is so bureaucratic

8:54

and politics has made health insurance

8:56

so bureaucratic

8:58

every hour of therapy that a therapist

9:00

spends with a patient

9:02

usually leads to about 30 minutes of

9:03

insurance paperwork

9:05

and this again reiterates why maybe more

9:09

experienced mental health professionals

9:11

are less inclined to actually work with

9:12

insurance

9:14

also you might go to the doctor for a

9:16

physical once a year that's free but

9:18

guess what's not free

9:19

mental health mental health is not free

9:21

once a year and it's also not something

9:22

you do once a year

9:23

in fact you have to pay co-pay generally

9:26

depending on your insurance plan or

9:27

you're paying out-of-pocket

9:28

every single time if they take insurance

9:30

every single time

9:32

you want a mental health or therapy

9:34

session

9:35

this makes accessing mental health much

9:38

more complicated and so maybe

9:42

we actually have this confluence of

9:45

issues in our country where

9:46

we have a very real mental health

9:49

disaster

9:50

and emergency but then when we look at

9:52

our solutions we're not actually trying

9:53

to solve the solutions we're trying to

9:55

bandage the solutions

9:56

why would i say that well consider this

9:59

gun advocates usually say well all we

10:01

need is mental health

10:02

screening before somebody buys a gun

10:04

well studies and research show that

10:06

it's very easy to lie your way through

10:08

these screenings and get a gun even if

10:10

you have mental health problems

10:11

so that doesn't work the bigger issue is

10:15

a massive infrastructure and societal

10:19

problem that we have around all mental

10:22

health

10:23

poverty education compassion

10:27

relationships our society is so

10:29

complicated and so

10:30

focused on me me me and so focused on

10:33

money money money

10:34

that we actually spend less time caring

10:36

about our friends and neighbors and

10:37

people in our society

10:39

and that's why it's easier to cast away

10:41

folks who might be in despair or

10:44

be depressed with well here take some

10:46

pills you go to a primary care physician

10:48

here

10:48

here's some pills because a mental

10:50

health professional isn't available for

10:51

you

10:52

the minimum wait period for mental

10:54

health professional today is about 25

10:55

days

10:56

25 days is a very long time especially

10:59

for things that should be treated

11:00

in many cases as mental health

11:02

emergencies as a result you

11:04

don't have a very good coordination

11:06

between primary care providers

11:08

and mental health services and so all of

11:11

a sudden

11:12

when we look at the issue of guns in our

11:15

society

11:16

we do know statistically know

11:20

that more guns can lead to more

11:23

suicides it's a little more blurry

11:26

as to whether or not more guns can lead

11:29

to more

11:30

homicides and this is very blurry

11:32

because

11:33

guns can be used in many different

11:35

manners

11:36

self-defense not self-defense justified

11:38

self-defense not justified self-defense

11:41

and we don't actually have all of the

11:42

statistics we need to make very

11:44

clear-cut conclusions

11:46

it's very difficult to come upon clear

11:49

conclusions

11:49

and statistics that say absolutely guns

11:52

lead to more gun violence

11:54

just like it's very difficult to with

11:56

certainty say

11:57

less guns leads to less violence now

12:00

folks like to point out well what about

12:01

like australia

12:03

right but now we have to correlate how

12:06

does

12:06

australia treat mental health how is

12:09

australia's

12:11

compassion environment how is

12:13

australia's educational environment

12:16

and so when i hear politicians say

12:19

oh the solution to our gun violence

12:22

problem

12:22

is banning or restricting guns or oh the

12:25

solution

12:26

and that's the left argument right or

12:27

the other solution is no no the solution

12:29

to

12:30

solving gun violence in america is just

12:33

screen people

12:34

right before they buy a gun to make sure

12:35

they don't have mental health issues

12:37

it's very

12:38

oversimplified that our societal

12:40

problems are so deep rooted and so much

12:42

harder than that

12:43

that the last thing we can do is say

12:45

that the left's bandage

12:47

or the rights bandage is the right

12:49

answer we have a much

12:50

broader problem and this is one of the

12:53

reasons

12:54

that when i win as governor of

12:57

california

12:58

i expect to institute plans for

13:01

mental health education as well as

13:03

financial education in high school

13:05

so that we learn compassion we learn

13:07

about mental health and we learn

13:08

about financial education or a financial

13:10

education before 18.

13:12

that we actually start treating our

13:14

societal problems from where they begin

13:17

schooling poverty we start solving

13:19

problems

13:20

with poverty by ending poverty we start

13:23

solving problems with homelessness by

13:24

ending homelessness and then

13:25

working to prevent it and rehabilitating

13:27

those who can be rehabilitated

13:29

and the same thing with housing we get

13:32

the government out of the way of housing

13:34

so that we can build more homes and so

13:35

that we have

13:37

less of a housing affordability crisis

13:39

and see

13:40

all of these massive issues that we have

13:42

in our society

13:43

along with many many many many others

13:46

that haven't even been mentioned in this

13:47

video but are also important

13:49

are all issues that can create this

13:52

compounding

13:53

despair and depression and

13:57

propensity towards violence

14:00

which is often in america expressed with

14:03

a gun but not always

14:05

and solving the problem is not as simple

14:08

as

14:08

the left's answer or the right's answer

14:11

it's much

14:12

broader than that it's going to take

14:13

time it's going to take a lot of effort

14:16

but we need to start doing that and

14:18

that's why i'm running for governor of

14:19

california

14:20

under my 20-part plan that tries to

14:24

solve the massive real issues that we

14:26

have in society

14:28

and at least i'll start because that's

14:30

the opposite of what people like gavin

14:32

newsom are doing right now

14:33

we've got a lot of talk but we've got no

14:35

start

14:36

if you support my message always
