FULL TRANSCRIPT
And we're back. And we're back, y'all.
Thank you for watching today. Go ahead
and hit that like button, my people. You
know that it helps us out a ton. And of
course, it helps you because it helps us
keep bringing you these stories every
day. Now y'all, we're following up on
the California ballot initiative scandal
where a California sheriff, who is also
running for governor of California, he
seized over 650,000
ballots in what looks like it might have
been some kind of vote irregularity on
Prop 50, which we're going to take a
look at here in a moment, y'all. But
now, not only has he seized additional
ballots past the original 650,000,
but also now an organization has sued to
stop his investigation. So now it's
temporarily on pause, y'all. Just a
whole lot going on with that. And also
we're going to remind you that at the
same time, in the meantime and in
between time, James O'Keeffe did an
investigative report in California and
found that homeless people allegedly
have been paid to register to vote, have
been paid to do voting related
activities, y'all. So, we're going to
flash back to that as well. I I
shouldn't even say flashback. That just
happened within the past few weeks as
well, y'all. So, we're going to cover
all of this here, get you all the way up
to date. Without further ado, y'all,
let's go ahead and get into it.
>> Tonight, we've learned Riverside County
Sheriff and GOP candidate for governor,
Chad Biano, seized hundreds of boxes of
additional ballots this week. That's on
top of the 600,000 he obtained last
month as part of his controversial
investigation into the last statewide
election. CBSLA political reporter Tom
Wait is here. And Tom, the state
attorney general was in court today
trying to stop Bianca. Yeah, he was in
Riverside County Court and now we have
even more breaking news in this case and
let's get to it right now. So, tonight
the legal battle between state attorney
general and Riverside County Sheriff
Chad Biano is escalating. We just
learned a few moments ago that Bont is
asking for an emergency hearing from the
state supreme court to block Biano's
attempted recount of the Prop 50 special
election. Biano says he's disgusted by
Bont's actions. Riverside County Sheriff
Chad Biano continues to ramp up his
controversial investigation into last
fall's Prop 50 special election. We
learned Friday Biano ordered the seizure
of an additional 426 boxes of ballots
from the Riverside County Registar of
Voters. That's in addition to more than
600,000 ballots seized last month
through a warrant.
>> The undermining of the registar of
voters for political gain. Local
community activists say Biano is
attacking democracy.
>> This is a campaign stunt.
This is political theater.
>> Sheriff Biano, who is running as a
Republican candidate for governor, is
also under fire from state attorney
general Rob Bont. On Friday, Bont asked
a Riverside County judge to order Biano
to stop his investigation, calling the
ballot seizure illegal. Biano says he
seized the ballots to conduct his own
recount after a citizens group claimed
there were 45,000 questionable votes in
Riverside County in the Prop 50 special
election. So there you can see Biano
seized not only the initial cash of
ballots, but also seized, I would
imagine, thousands and thousands more
ballots after that initial story broke.
And now we're going to take a look at
what what precipitated all of this or
what what came before this, y'all? what
maybe what led up to this massive
seizure of ballots. We went back and
checked and the group behind the audit
presented their findings at a Riverside
County Supervisor's meeting just weeks
before the ballots were seized.
>> All we're asking artist is where's the
paperwork? Where are the ballot
statements for 45,896?
At that same meeting, Riverside County
registar of voters Art Tanokco gave a
detailed presentation explaining why the
citizens group's numbers did not add up.
You are using raw raw data. That is,
none of these envelopes have gone
through any signature verification. In
there, you're going to find spoiled
ballots. You're going to have ballots
that were never signed. Sheriff Biano in
a statement blasted Bont and anyone
questioning his investigation, saying
he's simply trying to determine the
validity of fraud allegations, going on
to say the only question that should be
asked is why anyone would not want an
investigation to occur. UCLA's Voting
Rights Project, who was asking the
California Supreme Court to shut down
Bianca's investigation, says Biano is
not just breaking the law, but also
breaking public trust. What's happening
here in Riverside County is that the
ballots have been removed from the
trained election staff, which state law
says it shouldn't happen. Whoever does
the count when it's done in secret, at
least some group of people aren't going
to believe it.
>> We asked Biano for an interview this
evening. We were told he was not
available. We followed up with questions
about why he did not allow a nonpartisan
elections officials to conduct a
recount. We did not hear back. Okay, so
y'all, we have the initial seizure of
ballots, which were hundreds of
thousands of ballots. And then we have a
follow-up seizure, which apparently
would have been at least many, many
thousands more ballots. But now we have
organizations that have opposed this
entire operation, y'all, and have at
least for the time being successfully
stopped the sheriff from continuing with
this investigation. Well, the fight
continues in court tonight after
Riverside County Sheriff Chad Biano
seized hundreds of thousands of ballots
to investigate potential voter fraud. As
always, thank you so much for joining
us. I'm Alex Bell. Weeks after Biano's
office collected boxes of ballots from
last November's Prop 50 election and
Attorney General Rob Bont sent letters
and filed a petition to stop the
investigation. Things now appear to be
paused. I want to bring in ABC 10's
Genie Nuin who is here with the latest
updates on this case and also the
investigation. Alex, just today, Sheriff
Chad Biano told ABC 10 he is putting a
hold on his investigation into claims of
election fraud. This comes after the
attorney general and the UCLA Voting
Rights Project filed with the courts to
demand Biano to stop his investigation.
Now, even though this fight is far from
over, the Voting Rights Project believes
so far this is a win for them.
There are specific procedures that are
in place to ensure that the secrecy of
the ballots and the integrity of the
elections are preserved and those
specific procedures are what the UCLA
voting rights project wants Riverside
County Sheriff Chad Biano to abide by
during this contentious election season.
Partnered with the former attorney
general and gubanatorial candidate
Javier Basera, the organization filed
this petition to stop Sheriff Biano from
seizing any additional ballots. We're
asking the Supreme Court to intervene.
And the more ballots being seized,
again, the um the more mishandling of
the ballots that are happening. And
again, that's that's a huge threat to
the integrity of the election and the
integrity of any recount that takes
place.
>> So, that's where we stand now, y'all.
Everything is currently on pause, on
hold. But as I said in the beginning of
this video, y'all, not only do you have
this situation, but you also have James
O'Keefe's investigation, which seems to
indicate that homeless people have been
