0:10

just made it to Alaska first impression

0:13

right out of the gate is holy moly it's

0:15

bright now we're on a mission to find a

0:18

place to drop our bags apparently at

0:21

this Airport there is a place that you

0:22

can store your luggage for a small fee

0:25

that is where I am off to and then we're

0:27

gonna explore Anchorage so you don't

0:33

have to pay upfront you can pay when you

0:35

pick up your baggage but it's open until

0:38

1:00 a.m. the first stop is earthquake

0:44

Park which is located right next to the

0:46

airport the park is a monument that was

0:48

made to remember the largest quake ever

0:50

recorded in North America at a 9.2

0:53

magnitude back in 1964

0:55

[Music]

1:04

save a brain wear a bicycle helmet keep

1:08

your dog OHS on the leash after some

1:16

exploring around the area we settled for

1:18

a bite to eat in downtown Anchorage at

1:20

Glacier Brewhouse so the coolest thing

1:45

just happened this group of hikers just

1:47

came up to us and gave us this bear mace

1:50

because they're getting ready to board a

1:52

flight and obviously they can't bring it

1:54

so they saw my hiking boots attached to

1:57

my backpack and they were like do you

1:58

want this so it's super heavy-duty bear

2:03

mace so I'm all set for my hike I don't

2:05

even have to go and run one of the

2:07

errands that I was going to go and do so

2:09

score

2:11

[Music]

2:15

we just walked around town a little bit

2:17

bought some gifts at the gift shop and

2:20

now it is exactly 5:00 p.m. so we're

2:24

getting ready to go and pick up the

2:26

rental car and then right after that we

2:28

are going to laptop Mountain this has

2:34

been a great workout I saw a lot of

2:40

people running up this place

2:41

feeling the bird one thing I was not

2:45

prepared for here in Alaska was the

2:47

level of aggressiveness with the

2:48

mosquitos I went home with over 40 bites

2:51

all over my body even though I was

2:52

wearing bug repellent kind of wish I had

2:54

been rocking the mosquito net

3:00

shut stop so dizzy

3:06

[Music]

3:08

the climate self was anything but easy

3:11

we got to a part that was nothing but

3:13

large rocks and boulders that were

3:14

pretty challenging to navigate around we

3:16

had no idea what we were signing up for

3:18

and the last hour we spent actually

3:21

doing some rock climbing total hike

3:22

round-trip took us about four hours if

3:25

you plan to do this hike make sure

3:26

you're in good shape and bring lots of

3:28

water

3:29

[Music]

3:37

nearly 10:00 p.m. that let's how bright

3:41

it is can't believe no idea what we were

3:48

signing up for but we made it

3:51

persevered and this view is totally

3:53

worth it

3:54

[Music]

4:06

day two in Alaska and there has been

4:10

lots of smoke in the area because of a

4:13

wildfire that broke out an air quality

4:16

right now is just terrible it's totally

4:20

affecting visibility of the mountains I

4:24

don't even know if you can see it but

4:25

there's a really pretty mountain up

4:28

there that's covered with snow and it's

4:31

just you could barely even see it so

4:33

we'll see how this day goes regardless

4:35

of the smoke we are planning to go to

4:37

portage glacier today the hike in total

4:40

time takes about four hours two hours

4:42

each way and that will be pretty much

4:46

the highlight of today so we're gonna go

4:49

shop for some food and get some snacks

4:52

for the hike and then get going

4:54

hopefully be blown away by the winds the

5:01

funny thing about Alaska is you really

5:05

lose track of time because the Sun in

5:07

the summer is almost always up so when

5:11

we were hiking yesterday it was really

5:14

bright outside but we didn't realize

5:16

that it was already 10:00 p.m.

5:18

area we're staying in now gets about 20

5:20

hours of sunlight this Sun did end up

5:22

setting last night but it never got dark

5:25

it was the weirdest thing there was

5:26

never a point during the night last

5:28

night that it was pitch black and

5:29

actually looked like nighttime so that's

5:32

kind of cool when you're here in the

5:34

summer so you do have lots of hours of

5:36

daytime and if you can survive off of

5:39

four hours of sleep you can Jam pack so

5:42

much in one day

5:46

just finished up picking up some snacks

5:48

at Crow Creek mercantile it's pretty

5:51

much the only grocery store in town here

5:54

in Girdwood it's a tinier store it's a

5:56

small town you're kind of out in the

5:58

middle of nowhere so the prices are

6:00

gonna be a lot higher here but one thing

6:03

to keep in mind is there's no sales tax

6:04

so I think that kind of balances things

6:07

out but if you're looking to save money

6:08

and have a wider variety of options for

6:12

snacks and groceries

6:13

I would definitely shop first in

6:16

Anchorage at Walmart or something and

6:18

then drive down to Girdwood but I was

6:20

actually surprised they did have a

6:21

decent selection they do have bear mace

6:23

they do have mosquito repellent in there

6:27

some different food items

6:30

[Music]

6:35

just got to portage glacier area a

6:38

little bit lost right now because the

6:40

GPS is obviously not working because

6:42

we're out of cell service so we're gonna

6:45

have to stop at the visitor center and

6:47

kind of figure out where we're going but

6:48

we can see the glacier we just can't get

6:50

to the trailhead just yet but this this

6:53

stay here for a minute

6:55

I appreciate this view

6:57

[Music]

7:14

to get to Portage pass trailhead we had

7:17

to go through a two and a half mile one

7:19

lane tunnel which I'll go more into

7:20

detail about later in this video just

7:32

started the portage pass trail there are

7:35

so many mosquitoes and I feel so much

7:38

better about today because we have our

7:40

insect repellent I feel completely

7:43

guarded now the Whittier tunnel is only

7:45

open until 11 p.m. unfortunately I don't

7:48

think we have left ourselves enough time

7:50

to do the entire hike because it takes

7:53

about four hours minimum roundtrip but I

7:56

don't know we'll get as much as we can I

7:57

think we're gonna get relatively close

7:59

to the glacier they'll be able to

8:00

capture some beautiful shot

8:07

[Music]

8:15

the hike is about two miles in length

8:18

one-way and it begins with a fairly

8:20

strenuous climb with 750 feet in

8:23

elevation gain

8:24

once it levels off you're rewarded at

8:26

the top of the pass with an epic view

8:28

fit for your Instagram feed from the top

8:37

of the past the trail descends down the

8:39

hill and ends at Portage Lake hopeful

8:42

that we still had some time if we

8:43

hurried we ran the rest of the way in

8:45

order to make it back to the tunnel

8:47

before it closed for the night

8:49

[Music]

9:01

[Music]

9:14

[Music]

9:25

we made it to portage glacier it's right

9:28

behind me and you can see all these

9:29

little pieces of plasure in Portage Lake

9:33

[Music]

9:57

good morning this is day three in Alaska

10:01

we're now heading to Whittier from

10:04

Girdwood and the interesting thing about

10:06

Whittier is the only way to get there

10:08

from the north is via a tunnel that was

10:11

built in World War 2 era but the thing

10:13

about this tunnel is it's only one lane

10:15

so you have to time your arrival

10:17

perfectly because they switch directions

10:19

with traffic every 30 minutes

10:26

[Music]

10:30

right now we are essentially driving

10:33

through a mountain and it feels like it

10:36

goes on forever this thing goes for

10:38

about eight minutes

10:44

[Music]

10:50

next adventure is sea kayaking in Prince

10:53

William Sound we went with Alaska sea

10:55

kayakers for about a hundred and fifty

10:57

dollars per person for a six hour tour

10:59

Whittier is located about an hour south

11:02

of Anchorage so this is definitely

11:04

doable as a day trip if that's where

11:06

you're staying

11:09

pray for water spray uncomfortable

11:13

because the water is only a few degrees

11:15

above freezing we were provided with

11:17

spray skirts as a barrier to help us

11:19

stay warm and dry

11:24

[Music]

11:39

walking through the glacier from the

11:41

soup water in the big booth trying not

11:45

to fall

11:47

it's doable but if water gets in these

11:51

boots

11:51

it could have to be a happy day the cool

11:56

thing about this kayak tour was that we

11:58

stopped at these really interesting

11:59

coves that have the most beautiful

12:01

waterfalls and creeks to play in so this

12:17

is Prince William Sound every time yes

12:19

Billingsley shirt

12:22

the water temperature is somewhere

12:24

between a brisk 36 degrees Fahrenheit

12:27

and 40-somethings so we're doing our

12:30

best to stay stable but my kind of has a

12:32

rudder which is really cool because it

12:35

makes steering so much easier

12:48

today and there's actually not that much

12:50

fire smoke unlike you can still kind of

12:54

see it's a little hazy but it's still

12:56

beautiful

12:58

[Music]

13:58

that's all I have for the first half of

14:00

14:17

the first time I'm driven driven so

14:20

right now we are essentially covering

14:23

the maya32 it takes about 45 minutes to

14:27

an hour
