Why Technology is Actually Magic
“It's such a common form of magic that you don't even think about it.”

Science and technology is our excuse to
do magic. We make computers think by
zapping crystals with a magical force we
can't see called electricity. You're
using your phone or computer as some
kind of portal to look at this moment
from the past. And I'm using mine to
send you a message into the future. The
screens are made of either liquid
crystal or some kind of organic film
also being zapped by electricity. We
make most of that electricity by burning
some magic rocks that we found in the
ground. And sometimes we use even more
powerful radioactive magic rocks that
can power whole cities full of magic
items that are activated by your touch
and light up when you use them. In this
video, I'll talk about how all these
different things that we use every day,
like phones, the internet, cars, and
even fire are just human magic, but
we're so used to them that we forgot.
Probably the weirdest example of
technology being magic is microchips.
And we put them in everything. They make
them by growing some crystals out of
melted sand. And then they cut those
crystals into thin slices. And then they
burn some really small patterns into
them by shooting some light through a
lens. We basically have a bunch of
wizards growing crystals and then
carving them into tiny runes using
light. And then when it's done, we make
them think by pushing some electricity
through them, which is just some wave
particle magic energy source. But I'll
talk about that later in the video. So
then after we make these little magic
runes and put them in everything, what
do we do next? We enchant the object.
They basically just write a bunch of
symbols and words in a different
language and it brings life to inanimate
objects. They're just using some
incantations to enchant stuff. People
who write code and program things are
just some wizards who specialize in
enchantment magic. Your phone or
computer is an enchanted magical device
that's activated by your touch and
voice. And it can open up a portal to a
different dimension called the internet.
In the internet is just an enchanted
mostly two-dimensional realm that we
used to store and share information,
talk to each other, and trade things.
And it's all maintained by a bunch of
wizards constantly casting spells by
hitting enter. We also hide our money
inside banks in this realm that have
powerful magic seals to keep it safe
from rogue wizards trying to cast spells
to steal it. And we access it with our
debit card, an enchanted piece of
plastic, metal, and magic crystal. And
then there's Bitcoin, a really powerful
magic coin that's impossible to steal
because the seals protecting it are so
strong. The people making robots are
basically making golems, some things
made of earth that are brought to life
with writing or incantations. We're
getting so good at enchantment magic
that we're just enchanting things that
don't even need to be enchanted. You can
get an enchanted watch or a ring. Our
cards are full of enchantments. Your
house probably has an enchanted eye
watching the front door for you, ready
to alert you if somebody's there. You
can even buy enchanted glasses that
record everything you see and play sound
directly into your brain. And somehow
all these complex things are running off
some zeros and ones. It's basically the
lore to our magic systems. But that's
all just our most recent highle magic.
What about the first and the oldest type
of magic humans ever used? Fire. Isn't
it weird that without us using fire for
everything? It would be rare to see
before humans started using it, the only
time it would exist on Earth would be
from like a lightning strike or a
volcano starting a forest fire. Imagine
being another animal and seeing these
other weird creatures with this bright
glowing hot light. It must seem so
unnatural to them. We're just chilling
next to this stuff that could destroy
their whole world. And other animals
have to keep warm by trapping in the
heat they generate with thick fur skin.
We make an external heat source to get
warm. And they also think the use of
fire to cook made our digestive system
change. And the extra nutrients from
food being cooked made our brains get
bigger. It's almost like fire became
part of our digestive system. And now we
use fire everywhere. It's such a common
form of magic that you don't even think
about it. It used to be really hard to
make a fire, too. You either had to rub
sticks together or make some sparks with
rocks. Now, you can make fire with the
push of a button. But fire is just our
first form of magic energy. And we've
been slowly replacing it with a more
efficient form called electricity. And
this is where things started to get
weird. Electricity lets us level up our
magic so much from just using fire.
We've now got this form of invisible
magic energy that travels through metal
ropes and connects everything together.
It's lighting up our whole world and
powering all our magic devices. But what
even is this stuff? Electricity is just
the flow of electrons from atom to atom.
And electrons are these things that
orbit or spin around the atoms. They
orbit the atoms because of a force like
gravity called electromagnetism. They
also make the atoms magnetically stick
together to make up molecules which
makes up everything in reality. So these
electrons are really just holding
everything together. And electricity is
just pushing those electrons from atom
to atom and something like a wire or the
circuits in electronics. And the
electrons are really weird. They're
physical and non-physical. They spread
out and act like a wave of energy until
we try to look and see where they are.
And then they collapse into a single
point of matter. They're somehow a wave
of energy and a piece of matter
depending on what they're doing. The
more that you look into what these
things are, the more it sounds like
they're just trying to make up a logical
conclusion to how the magic works. And
the reason electricity is just an
evolved version of fire magic is because
the energy or heat that comes from fire
is just the energy being released from
the electron bonds breaking that hold
everything together. It's all just a
really complex lore system for our
magical energy. And it all works by
manipulating the things that hold
everything together. So, electricity is
weird, but it gets even weirder when you
find out that almost all of our
electronic devices are using some form
of crystal magic. If you zap a quartz
crystal with electricity, it'll
physically vibrate at high speeds. And
if you do the opposite and apply a
physical force to it, it'll produce some
electricity. It's just a crystal with
some magical properties that can convert
energy from one type to another. We use
the vibrating part in electronics to
keep track of time. Basically, the
heartbeat. They also use it to make the
radio waves vibrate for Wi-Fi and
Bluetooth, but I'll talk about that in a
minute because that's a magic all on its
own. And it even controls the vibrations
of ultrasounds. And then they use it the
other way to convert movement into
electrical signals to measure things
like force, acceleration, pressure
change. Your phone even uses the effect
to feel gravity, which is similar to how
we feel gravity with crystals in our
heads. We're just putting a little
magical crystal that converts physical
force into electrical energy in almost
everything. And these crystals actually
let us unlock another level of magic
beyond electricity to make things like
Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. They put a crystal
in each device and then they zap them
with electricity to make them talk to
