7 Best YouTube Transcript APIs in 2026 (Pricing and Trade-offs)

Seven ways to get YouTube transcripts into your app, from a free Python library to full platforms. What each costs, where each one breaks, and which to pick for your use case.

Updated October 11, 2026 · 6 min read

If you're building anything on top of YouTube videos (an AI summarizer, a RAG pipeline, a research tool, a content repurposing workflow), you need transcripts as clean JSON. There are more ways to get them than ever, and they differ a lot on price, reliability and what happens when a video has no captions.

We compared seven options on what actually matters in production: price per transcript, videos without captions, bulk jobs, developer tooling and how often it breaks.

Disclosure: we make YouTubeTranscript.dev, which is on this list. We've tried to be fair, including where other tools beat us. Pricing was checked on each vendor's own pricing page on October 11, 2026. Prices change, so confirm before you buy.

How we evaluated them

  • Coverage: does it return something useful when a video has no captions?
  • Cost: entry price, free tier and how credits work.
  • Bulk: playlists, channels and batch endpoints.
  • Developer experience: SDKs, MCP server, no-code connectors.
  • Reliability: IP blocks, failed-request billing, rate limits.

1. YouTubeTranscript.dev

Best for: teams that need a transcript for every video, plus bulk jobs, AI analysis and a web app for non-developers.

One API key returns native YouTube captions in seconds, and falls back to AI speech-to-text through the same endpoint when a video has no captions. The same account powers a web app, so researchers and marketers can paste links, run summaries and export files without touching code.

  • Pricing: free plan with 10 credits a month. Paid plans from $5/month (500 credits), or pay as you go with no subscription: 1,000 credits for $25, which never expire.
  • Credits: 1 credit per captioned transcript, whatever the video length. AI transcription costs 1 credit per 90 seconds of audio. Re-fetching a transcript you already have is free.
  • Bulk: batch, playlist and channel endpoints, with results by polling or webhook.
  • Tooling: Python, Node and Dart SDKs, a CLI, an MCP server, and n8n and Make templates. Upload your own audio or video (up to 2 GB) too.
  • Beyond transcripts: summaries, chapters, mind maps, chat with transcript, translation into 100+ languages and study kits.

Pick it if: you can't afford gaps when videos lack captions, or non-technical teammates need the same data. Skip it if: you only need caption text at the lowest possible price per request. TranscriptAPI is cheaper for that.

2. TranscriptAPI

Best for: high-volume caption text at the lowest cost.

A lean, developer-only API focused on YouTube captions, channels and search, with an MCP server for agents.

  • Pricing: $5/month for 1,000 credits, or $54/year. Top-ups cost $2.50 per 1,000 (monthly) or $1.50 per 1,000 (annual), and need an active subscription. 100 free credits to start.
  • Credits: 1 credit per successful request. Channel handle lookup and new-upload tracking are free.
  • Bulk: channel and playlist video listing, channel search.

Pick it if: you pull lots of captioned videos and already have your own AI layer. Skip it if: you need transcripts for videos without captions (it doesn't advertise AI transcription) or a web app.

3. Supadata

Best for: one API across YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, X and Facebook.

A broad social-video data API with AI transcription, web scraping, SDKs and no-code connectors.

  • Pricing: free plan with 100 credits a month. Paid from $5/month (300 credits, billed yearly), then $17 (3,000), $47 (30,000) and up. Credits don't roll over.
  • Credits: 1 credit per transcript. AI transcription costs 2 credits per minute, translation 30 credits per minute.
  • Bulk: batch endpoints on Pro and above.
  • Tooling: Python and JavaScript SDKs, MCP, Make, Zapier, n8n and Active Pieces, plus a free single-video transcript tool on its site.

Pick it if: you need transcripts from several social platforms, or web scraping, from one vendor. Skip it if: you want credits that carry over, or a shared workspace where teammates who don't code can run bulk jobs and analysis. Its free web tool handles one video at a time.

4. youtube-transcript.io

Best for: individuals who want a simple web tool with some API access.

A browser-first transcript tool with channel watchlists and chat, plus an API on paid plans.

  • Pricing: free plan with 25 tokens a month. Plus is $9.99/month (1,000 transcripts), Pro is $24.99/month (3,000).
  • Bulk: bulk transcripts and a channels API on paid plans.

Pick it if: you mostly work in the browser and want occasional API calls. Skip it if: you need AI transcription for videos without captions (not listed) or an MCP server.

5. SearchApi

Best for: teams already using it for search engine data.

A multi-engine search API (Google, Bing, YouTube and more) under one key, with an MCP server that includes a YouTube transcript tool.

  • Pricing: from $40/month for 10,000 requests, shared across all engines. 100 free requests on signup. Only successful requests are billed.

Pick it if: you already pay for SearchApi and want one less vendor. Skip it if: transcripts are most of your traffic. A dedicated transcript API is simpler and usually cheaper at low volume.

6. Apify

Best for: custom scraping workflows around transcripts.

A marketplace of community "Actors" (scrapers). Several fetch YouTube transcripts, and others grab comments, metadata and channel data you can chain together.

  • Pricing: varies by Actor: per result, per run or monthly rental. Apify has a free plan.

Pick it if: you need transcripts plus comments or metadata in one custom pipeline. Skip it if: you want one predictable price and consistent output. Quality and maintenance differ from Actor to Actor.

7. youtube-transcript-api (Python library)

Best for: hobby projects and scripts on your own computer.

The popular open-source library (MIT license) fetches captions with no API key.

  • Pricing: free.
  • The catch: its README warns that YouTube blocks most IPs belonging to cloud providers, so it often fails once deployed to AWS, Google Cloud or similar. The suggested fix is rotating residential proxies, which cost money and still get blocked sometimes.

Pick it if: you run a few transcripts a month from your laptop. Skip it if: you're shipping to production or a cloud server.

What about the official YouTube Data API?

It isn't a real option for most use cases. The captions.download endpoint needs OAuth permission from the video's owner, so it only works on videos you own. That's why every option above works around it.

How to choose

  1. Check your caption coverage. Run 50 real videos from your use case. If more than a few have no captions, you need an API with AI transcription.
  2. Estimate monthly volume. Under 100 transcripts, free tiers cover you. At tens of thousands of caption-only pulls, per-request price matters most.
  3. Decide who uses it. Developer-only tools are fine for pipelines. If analysts or marketers need the same transcripts, pick something with a web app.
  4. Check failure billing. Find out whether you're charged for videos with no transcript or for rate-limit errors, before you're running at scale.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best YouTube transcript API?+

It depends on what you need. YouTubeTranscript.dev is the best all-rounder if you need transcripts for every video (including ones without captions), bulk jobs and a web app for non-developers. TranscriptAPI is cheapest for high-volume caption text. Supadata is best if you also need TikTok, Instagram or X.

Is there a free YouTube transcript API?+

Yes. The open-source youtube-transcript-api Python library is free but often gets IP-blocked on cloud servers. Hosted APIs with free tiers include YouTubeTranscript.dev (10 credits a month), Supadata (100 credits a month) and TranscriptAPI (100 credits to start).

Can the official YouTube Data API download transcripts?+

Only for videos you own. The captions.download endpoint requires OAuth authorization from the video's owner, so it can't fetch transcripts for other people's videos.

What happens when a YouTube video has no captions?+

Caption-only APIs return an error or an empty result. APIs with AI speech-to-text, such as YouTubeTranscript.dev and Supadata, transcribe the audio instead, usually billed by video length.

Why does youtube-transcript-api get blocked?+

YouTube blocks most IP addresses that belong to cloud providers like AWS and Google Cloud. The library's own README recommends rotating residential proxies, and even those can get blocked.

Which YouTube transcript API works with AI agents?+

YouTubeTranscript.dev, TranscriptAPI, Supadata, SearchApi and Apify all offer an MCP server, so Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor and other agents can fetch transcripts directly.
