Part two. You will hear the manager of a

0:08

child care service at a primary school

0:11

talking to parents at an open day about

0:14

the school's child care service offered

0:16

before and after school. First, you have

0:20

some time to look at questions 11 to 15.

0:58

Now listen carefully and answer

1:00

questions 11 to

1:04

15. Good afternoon. My name's Mrs.

1:08

Carter and I run the before and after

1:10

school extended hours child care

1:13

service. I hope you've had a chance to

1:15

have a good look around the school and

1:17

talk to staff and pupils. I know that

1:20

many of you are interested in using our

1:22

child care service when your child joins

1:25

the school and perhaps you already know

1:27

something about it, but for those that

1:30

don't, I'll go through the main details

1:33

now. We offer child care for children

1:36

from the ages of 4 to 11, both before

1:39

and after school. I know that many

1:42

parents who work find this service

1:45

invaluable. You can leave your child

1:47

with us safe in the knowledge that they

1:49

will be extremely well cared for. We are

1:53

insured to provide care for up to 70

1:56

children. Although we rarely have this

1:59

many attending at any one

2:01

session, I think we generally expect

2:03

around 50 to 60 children for the

2:06

afternoon sessions and about half that

2:09

number for the breakfast

2:11

sessions. Although we currently do have

2:14

70 children registered with us, not all

2:17

of these attend every day. It's 10 years

2:20

since we began offering an extended

2:23

hours service and we've come a long way

2:25

during that time.

2:27

When we first opened, we only had about

2:29

20 children attending

2:32

regularly. We try to keep our costs as

2:34

low as we can, and we think we provide

2:37

very good value for money. For the

2:40

afternoon sessions, which run from 3:30

2:42

until 6:00 p.m., it's

2:45

£720. But if you prefer, you can pay for

2:49

1 hour only, which costs

2:51

£350, or 2 hours, which costs £5.70.

2:56

The cost of the child care includes food

2:59

and snacks. They'll be given breakfast

3:02

in the morning and in the afternoon a

3:05

healthy snack as soon as they finish

3:07

school. At 5:00 p.m., children are given

3:10

something more substantial such as pasta

3:13

or a casserole. Please inform us of any

3:17

allergies that your child might have and

3:20

we'll make sure they're offered a

3:22

suitable alternative.

3:24

As you may know, the child care service

3:27

runs through the school holidays from

3:29

8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. We offer a really

3:32

varied and exciting program to keep the

3:35

children entertained. We don't want them

3:37

to feel as if they are still at school.

3:40

It will also feel different because

3:42

they'll get the chance to make new

3:44

friends with children from other

3:46

schools. Spaces are available for them

3:49

because a lot of our termtime children

3:51

don't always attend during the holiday.

3:54

In the past, parents have asked if

3:57

children over the age of 11 are allowed

3:59

to come with their younger brothers and

4:01

sisters, but I'm afraid we're unable to

4:04

do this because of the type of insurance

4:07

we have.

4:11

Before you hear the rest of the talk,

4:13

you have some time to look at questions

4:16

16 to 20.

4:43

Now listen and answer questions 16 to

4:46

20.

4:50

So now let me tell you about some of the

4:52

activities that your child can do during

4:54

the after school

4:56

sessions. As well as being able to use

4:58

the playground equipment, computers, and

5:01

the library, there is usually at least

5:04

one special activity that children can

5:06

do each day. For example, Spanish. We

5:10

have a specialist teacher coming in

5:12

every Thursday to give a basic

5:14

introduction to the language through

5:16

games and songs.

5:18

She does two sessions, one for the over

5:21

eights and one for the younger

5:23

children. This is the only activity

5:26

which we have to make an extra charge

5:28

for, but it's well worth it. Once a

5:31

week, the children have the opportunity

5:33

to do some music. We're very lucky that

5:36

one of our staff is a member of a folk

5:39

band. On Mondays, she teaches singing

5:42

and percussion to groups of children. We

5:45

do rely on parental support for this.

5:48

So, if any of you sing or play an

5:50

instrument and would be prepared to help

5:52

out at these sessions, we'd be

5:55

delighted. Painting continues to be one

5:58

of the most popular activities. To begin

6:01

with, we weren't keen on offering this

6:03

because of the extra mess involved, but

6:06

children kept asking if they could do

6:09

some art, and so we finally gave in. Art

6:12

is great for helping the children to

6:14

relax after working hard at school all

6:17

day. Yoga is something that we've been

6:20

meaning to introduce for some time, but

6:22

haven't been able to find anyone

6:24

available to teach it until now that is.

6:28

So, we'll see how this goes. Hopefully,

6:31

children will benefit in all sorts of

6:33

ways from

6:34

this. Cooking is another popular

6:37

activity. They make a different sort of

6:39

cake or pizza or bread each week.

6:43

Although the younger children love doing

6:44

it, we found that the mess was just too

6:47

much. So, we've decided to restrict this

6:50

to the overates as they are better able

6:53

to clean up after

6:57

themselves. That is the end of part two.
