Hey Mandy! What did you do yesterday?

0:04

I was very busy all day.

0:07

I worked on an English Panda video in the morning,

0:11

and in the afternoon I studied for a test.

0:15

I also did house chores.

0:19

What did you do yesterday?

0:22

I had a great day.

0:23

I took the day off from work, so I went shopping with my friend,

0:27

and we ate a really nice lunch together.

0:30

Then we watched a movie. It was fantastic.

0:33

When I got home, I played video games!

0:39

Must be nice!

0:46

Hey everyone! Today, we're going to learn about the past simple tense!

0:51

The past simple helps us to talk about things that happened in the past and are already finished.

0:58

We'll learn about regular verbs, irregular verbs, and how to make negative sentences and questions!

1:06

Are you ready to go back in time?

1:08

Let's do it!

1:12

The first way we use past simple is with regular verbs!

1:16

These verbs are super easy to use.

1:19

All you have to do is add -ed to the end. That's it!

1:24

For example: I watched a movie yesterday.

1:29

She worked on a video.

1:33

I played video games.

1:36

There are some exceptions. Take a look at this verb:

1:41

I was studying but I stopped one hour ago.

1:46

Did you notice the extra 'p' in the word "stopped"?

1:50

If the last three letters of a regular verb are consonant, vowel, consonant,

1:56

then you have to repeat the final letter before '-ed.'

2:00

There are some exceptions to this but we will give you a list at the end of the video!

2:06

Now let's take a look at irregular verbs.

2:09

These verbs don't follow the -ed rule. They change in different ways!

2:14

Ooooh, irregular verbs!

2:18

They're special, and you have to learn their new forms.

2:22

Go becomes went,

2:24

eat becomes ate,

2:27

and take becomes took. No -ed here!

2:31

Here are a few examples:

2:35

I went to the park yesterday.

2:39

She ate pizza for dinner last night.

2:44

They took a trip last summer.

2:48

There's no one rule for irregular verbs, so it's important to study them.

2:56

Before we continue with the lesson, we have a special request.

3:23

Now, let's get back to the lesson!

3:28

All of the examples so far were positive. I watched, I did, I ate.

3:34

But what about negative sentences?

3:37

No problem!

3:38

We just use 'didn't' and keep the main verb in its base form.

3:44

Wait, wait...

3:46

Even in the past, the verb stays the same after didn't?

3:50

That's right!

3:51

Just use didn't plus the base verb, and you are talking about the past.

3:56

Let's see some examples:

3:59

I didn't do my homework last night.

4:04

She didn't go to the party.

4:08

We didn't eat lunch today.

4:13

The final thing you need to learn is that you can also ask questions about the past.

4:18

Past simple questions look like this:

4:22

Did you see the new movie?

4:25

Did they run in the race?

4:31

Did she write a letter to her friend?

4:37

Let's do a quick review!

4:39

To use past simple correctly, you must learn: regular verbs,

5:20

irregular verbs,

5:29

negative sentences, and how to ask questions!

5:34

Now it's your turn! What did you do yesterday?

5:38

Write an answer to us in the comments.

5:41

We hope this video helped you with past simple.

5:44

Practice talking about your past using both regular and irregular verbs,

5:50

and don't forget to ask lots of questions in your next English conversation!

5:55

Thanks for watching, everyone! Bye!
