This episode of On orbit is brought to

0:02

you by Cesium Astro, a leading US

0:05

designer and manufacturer of

0:06

missionritical AI enabled

0:08

softwaredefined space and defense

0:10

systems. [music]

0:18

>> [music]

0:19

>> As a young electrical engineer at RC

0:21

Corporation, Shea Cyberpore was inspired

0:24

by the company's legacy of contributing

0:26

to space missions, and he wanted to make

0:28

his own mark by establishing a company

0:29

that builds technology in the US.

0:32

[music] Sheay went on to found CCM Astro

0:34

10 years ago, which is now at a pivotal

0:36

moment in its growth journey. He joins

0:39

on orbit this week after the company

0:40

recently raised $270 million and secured

0:44

XIM financing to build out manufacturing

0:47

capabilities [music] in Texas.

0:50

In this interview, Sheay shares his deep

0:52

passion for building in America and how

0:54

he sees a crucial link between strong

0:56

commercial competition, resilient supply

0:58

chains, and defense readiness. [music]

0:59

He also talks about Cesium Astro's

1:02

growth from providing softwaredefined

1:03

radios to now full-scale missions and

1:06

previews the launch of the company's

1:07

first satellite targeted for later this

1:09

year. [music] I'm Rachel Jwitt and

1:11

you're listening to On Orbit, the

1:13

podcast that asks, "What's our future in

1:15

space?"

1:24

>> Hi Shay, welcome to On Orbit.

1:26

>> Hi. Hi Rachel. It's pleasure to be with

1:28

you again. Thank you so much for the

1:30

time.

1:30

>> Yes. So super excited to have you on the

1:32

podcast in the leadup to to SAT show

1:36

later in March. We're talking at a

1:38

really exciting time for Cesium Astro.

1:40

So I know recently the company you

1:42

announced a large funding raise. You

1:45

guys raised $470 million in growth

1:48

capital. Is this would you say this is a

1:50

pivotal moment for Cesium Astro? Can you

1:53

talk a little bit about how you're

1:54

expanding your capabilities from

1:56

providing phase phase systems to now

1:58

you're doing end-to-end systems?

2:01

>> It really is uh it is a pivotal moment

2:04

absolutely uh and beyond just master and

2:08

honestly I think for the entire US

2:09

industrial base and defense industrial

2:11

base as a whole and uh and this funding

2:15

and this growth plan uh is a scale

2:18

moment for us. uh it validates uh the

2:21

the the incredible progress we've made

2:23

as a team, grown as a team uh from 9

2:26

years ago to today. Um we're a hardware

2:30

and software uh first company, meaning

2:33

that uh we actually like to build things

2:36

first before we go out uh too much with

2:38

it. And that's what we have done. We

2:40

have incredible products that uh are

2:43

being built at our smaller manufacturing

2:46

facility that's just about a half a mile

2:47

down the road from us. And now this

2:49

allows us to actually scale both our

2:51

engineering facilities uh and

2:53

manufacturing facility by about uh scale

2:57

of at least 10x uh in in west of Austin

3:00

here in uh Bave, Texas. Um beyond that,

3:05

it allows us to expand our facilities uh

3:07

in our Westminster, Colorado facility,

3:09

in our LA office. We now have locations

3:12

around the world uh in uh uh in in

3:15

Japan, in Tokyo, in in um uh in in

3:19

Taiwan, as well as in in Munich, uh in

3:22

London, and uh we'll we'll be soon

3:25

announcing other locations in the US,

3:28

including Washington DC as well as a

3:31

couple other locations.

3:33

>> That's really neat. You know, I didn't

3:35

know until recently that CZ Master that

3:37

you guys had a global presence as well.

3:39

So I think that's really exciting how

3:42

much you guys are expanding.

3:44

>> Yes. Yes indeed. Thank you. It's uh we

3:46

need to be a global company because uh

3:48

this investment around u communication

3:52

uh technologies for dual use

3:54

applications are global with us and all

3:56

of our allies around the world. So we

3:59

need to have this presence. Uh yeah.

4:01

Yeah.

4:02

>> So with that recent funding round, there

4:04

was also XIM financing specifically

4:08

aimed at increasing manufacturing in the

4:11

US. So talk to me about how you are, you

4:14

know, kind of what you're doing to

4:15

expand that manufacturing capability in

4:17

Texas.

4:19

>> Yes. Uh so as you know uh one of the

4:22

things that uh we've done methodically

4:24

from the beginning of the company is uh

4:28

to when when you want to be in satellite

4:30

communications or in general satellite

4:32

communications and ISR intelligence

4:34

surveillance reconnaissance these are

4:35

the sort of dual use applications of

4:37

satellites as you know in earth orbit.

4:39

Um uh there are multiple ways of doing

4:42

it. uh some people can decides that

4:45

decide that they want to be in the data

4:47

business and and then go buy a satellite

4:49

from somebody and then buy a payload

4:51

from somebody or launch it or just

4:53

outsource the whole thing. Uh we're a

4:55

company that started from the core

4:57

technology first meaning that we decided

4:59

that we're going to develop the core

5:01

payload technologies required for for

5:04

these kind of missions that I just

5:05

talked about

5:06

>> and we developed those from the

5:07

beginning of the company that allows you

5:09

to methodically

5:11

grow with the amount of funding that you

5:13

can reasonably raise. Uh so if you look

5:15

at our seed financing through our series

5:18

A and B and C, it has grown uh you've

5:20

reported on it several times. So with

5:23

that initial investment allow allowed us

5:25

to build the core technologies around

5:27

the software defined radio the phase

5:28

arrays and a whole bunch of other

5:30

technologies actually grow with it make

5:33

those into products that we sell and and

5:35

grew with it and now we've added things

5:38

around it um to to be able to get into

5:41

full missions. Now with that comes

5:43

bigger factories and bigger capabilities

5:45

and bigger supply chain. So that's where

5:47

our footprint has grown. um a couple of

5:51

M&As in the process. And so we got to a

5:54

point now where we needed to expand and

5:57

completely build not only just all of

5:59

our product lines in uh edge computing,

6:02

software defined radios, phase arrays,

6:04

antennas, hardware, processors, and you

6:06

name it, but also the satellites, attach

6:09

them together, build entire missions. So

6:12

that's what this XM

6:15

uh loan does for us. Uh it allows us to

6:19

um uh expend uh the capital that's

6:23

required and the facilities that are

6:24

required. Uh and we chose to actually

6:27

buy this facility because

6:30

uh there's so much capital that goes

6:32

into it. If just lease a facility and

6:33

after 10 years you want to rip it all

6:35

out, that's kind of hard. So just sort

6:36

of buying it for us was important and

6:38

we've invested in it and we're going to

6:40

grow it in West Texas at at our West

6:43

Austin, sorry, as our global

6:45

headquarters and manufacturing. But we

6:48

will also continue to uh to to invest in

6:50

our Westminster facility,

6:52

>> LA office and so on. Yeah.

6:54

>> Yeah. You've been very methodical about

6:56

growing the company. It's not like you

6:58

raised a ton of money at first and then

7:00

had to meet a lot of projections. It's

7:02

like I feel like Cesium Astro has been

7:04

very intentional about growing along the

7:07

way as the business has grown.

7:09

>> Thank you so much for noticing that. We

7:10

Yes, we're very proud of it. Uh you know

7:12

we we like to say that uh with less than

7:16

$160 million worth of venture capital

7:18

money in 9 years uh we have now won more

7:21

than $700 million in contracts just

7:24

after introducing our first products uh

7:26

over the past uh uh couple of years. And

7:29

uh and that's because we have been

7:31

methodical. We have uh we we always

7:34

wanted uh to make sure we have hardware

7:36

and software and firmware that comes out

7:39

of the box and works and works according

7:41

to what we promised. Build it, sell it,

7:44

grow from there, mature it, put it in

7:47

orbit, prove it out, and then grow from

7:49

there. And so we went from components to

7:52

subsystems to missions to to full

7:54

satellite missions now. And that really

7:56

actually worked out really well for us

7:58

both as a business and as as also as uh
