So 20 years ago, Chipotle was the staple

0:02

of what fast food should be where it

0:03

gave people a lot of food at a low

0:05

price. It had fast service and also use

0:06

fresh ingredients. But cut of the day

0:08

and the ingredients aren't so fresh, the

0:09

service isn't so fast, and the portion

0:11

sizes have definitely gone down and the

0:13

brand is fading. So I'm just wondering

0:14

why Chipotle sucks now. Starting this

0:16

off, we got to go back to the year 1993

0:18

where Taco Bell was huge having 7,000

0:20

stores, but there was a big problem

0:21

where people didn't think it was

0:22

authentic Mexican food and also at the

0:24

same time the main demographic going

0:26

there were kids and teenagers, but not a

0:27

lot of adults were that interested. The

0:29

most pitiful product that Taco Bell had

0:30

in the 90s was the burrito because there

0:32

was nothing customizable about it. And

0:34

also at the same time, it was very small

0:35

for burrito standards only being.3

0:37

pounds at the time. So because of that,

0:38

we got to meet this guy right here,

0:40

Steve Ells, where in 1993 he's this

0:42

recent graduate from culinary school.

0:43

And the thing about him is he goes to

0:45

these shops in San Francisco that are

0:46

selling burritos and he noticed just how

0:48

fast they are and how big the burritos

0:50

are. He's like, "Hey, this needs to go

0:51

to Colorado." He ends up taking out an

0:53

$85,000 loan to rent out an abandoned

0:55

Dolly Madison ice cream parlor in

0:57

Denver, Colorado. And there was the

0:58

first Chipotle. And there were two big

1:00

factors that led to Chipotle's growth

1:02

with the first one just being value.

1:03

Because even though their burritos were

1:04

$6 versus Taco Bell at $2.50, they

1:07

offered a lot more food to the point

1:08

they were only charging 20% more for the

1:10

amount of calories people were getting.

1:12

But they had way better ingredients, so

1:13

people didn't care. And then the next

1:14

one was actually McDonald's because in

1:16

1998, McDonald's decided to invest in

1:18

Chipotle. And by 2005, they invested so

1:20

much they actually own 90% of the

1:22

company. So what really helped Chipotle

1:24

grow is McDonald's was running all their

1:25

logistics and inventory. And the reason

1:27

why they did that was along with make

1:28

money, they wanted to start competing

1:29

with Taco Bell is that by 2006, Chipotle

1:32

was just living the dream where they

1:33

IPOed for $700 million, but they were

1:35

valued more like a tech stock. So they

1:36

end up being worth 1.3 billion. But once

1:38

that happened, problems began. The first

1:40

big problem being in 2006, McDonald's

1:42

decided to sell all their Chipotle stock

1:43

because the reason was the Chipotle

1:44

stock was so high. They thought they

1:46

were making this huge profit. But when

1:47

they left, all the logistics they

1:49

brought to Chipotle went with it. And

1:50

then what also happened was the 2008

1:52

recession. And the reason for that is

1:53

because the price of commercial real

1:54

estate dropped 30%. So rents across the

1:57

board went down massively. Reason that

1:58

became a big deal for Chipotle is this.

2:00

Because in 2006, before the recession

2:02

began, they had 500 locations. But then

2:04

after the recession in 2014, they're at

2:06

2,000. And the reason that's such a big

2:07

deal is because during the recession,

2:09

when real estate was cheap, they got all

2:10

these leases across the country in these

2:12

expensive areas because they thought

2:13

they were making out like bandits.

2:14

Problem with that long-term just became

2:16

the prices. Because when the recession

2:17

recovered, all those areas that they

2:19

bought, which were much more expensive

2:20

locations, had the rents go up massively

2:22

later on. So Chipotle had to raise their

2:24

prices which a lot of consumers were

2:25

pissed off about. There things only got

2:27

worse because in 2016 when they were

2:28

renegotiating a lot of their rent deals

2:30

they had a massive E.coli outbreak where

2:32

sales actually dipped 10% for the

2:34

company where before that they were

2:35

growing by 20% per year but that was the

2:37

first year ever they made less than the

2:38

year before. The big complaint about

2:40

Chipotle is they've cut the quality

2:41

where people are getting burritos and

2:42

they're largely just rice with a little

2:44

bit of meat. So because they're not

2:46

getting the same value that made them

2:47

really popular in the 90s and 2000s

2:48

going against Taco Bell. The reason is

2:50

just real estate because Chipotle put

2:51

themselves in these really expensive

2:53

locations to be more boutique. But the

2:55

problem is they can't keep up with that

2:56

because they're growing past inflation.

2:58

And with that, I'm Charles P.
