0:08

okay hi everyone oh god you're like a

0:16

bunch of high school kids in the morning

0:18

my name is John Muldoon that was quite

0:21

the intro by the way thank you I am the

0:23

principal of the high school here on the

0:24

pusci campus of Shanghai American school

0:26

and I'll tell you I'm also I'm a little

0:29

nervous to be standing up here today

0:31

i-i've still in this stage a lot this

0:33

year and I've talked with a lot of

0:34

different people but there's something

0:36

about that like red-dot back there on

0:38

the ground that is intimidating and part

0:41

about my part of what I'm going to talk

0:43

about tonight is about being honest with

0:45

yourself and other people and so I

0:47

figure what better way to start then say

0:50

that I'm a little nervous by be and be

0:52

honest with you ah see you laughed a lot

0:54

during the last one which I think makes

0:56

the bar pretty high for me so here's the

1:01

thing I I'm gonna talk to you a little

1:02

bit about and I there's a disclaimer

1:05

here in a very unscientific art of why

1:19

I'm nervous as I saw our school

1:20

psychologist out here and I'm sure there

1:23

is yeah so I'm sure that the

1:28

psychologist in the crowd is going to be

1:30

very analytical with the advice I give

1:31

all of you so I hope none of it is

1:33

malpractice here's the thing

1:38

our brains are supremely powerful organs

1:41

and we don't often think about how we're

1:45

using them right

1:47

I actually I can pinpoint the first time

1:50

I actually thought about how we use our

1:51

brain I was in sixth grade so has in

1:56

sixth grade and I'll be asked to do my

2:00

family's going through a really hard

2:01

time a really horrible time actually and

2:04

we're spending a lot of time in the car

2:06

so my dad's driving him and I'm sitting

2:09

next to him up front my sister and my

2:11

brother and I are in the back

2:13

cramps it's always a good recipe for

2:14

something right and my father is

2:18

compulsively listening to motivational

2:20

tapes right yeah cassette tapes right

2:25

yeah so he's listening cassette tapes

2:27

with all these people who are telling me

2:29

and my family through the speakers of

2:32

the car how great life is and how

2:36

awesome we are and how everything is

2:37

gonna be amazing it was like the worst

2:42

great hey it was objectively the worst

2:45

thing ever and totally not what I wanted

2:47

to hear when I was going through some

2:49

horrible things that I could not control

2:51

and I'll never forget I remember this

2:55

one and particularly this guy I chefs my

2:58

dad if you still as a team so this guy

3:01

says that the key to happiness is to

3:06

talk to yourself but not just like talk

3:10

to yourself right to say like really

3:12

great thinks yourself he's like you

3:13

should wake up every day this and it

3:15

sounded so ridiculous to actually listen

3:16

to it right he he's like you get up

3:18

every day and you go to the mirror and

3:20

you look at yourself and you're like you

3:22

look good today is gonna be awesome

3:26

right hey said if you do this all the

3:29

time you'll actually get little voices

3:33

that develop in your head that say nice

3:34

things to you all day long

3:36

and so here I am I'm like 11 or 12 years

3:39

old and I'm like training your brain to

3:43

get little voices that talk to you all

3:44

day long yeah like I'm pretty sure

3:46

that's the mark of something not good

3:48

right

3:50

I mean I can't tell how many fights we

3:55

had about this as a family mostly

3:56

started by me right like why can't we

3:58

just listen to the radio like a normal

4:00

family but I'll never forget it

4:05

part of it is because we were going

4:08

through what was probably the darkest

4:09

chapter of my father's life and he was

4:12

show he chose to listen to somebody tell

4:16

him good things it was a choice he made

4:18

I didn't understand that back then so

4:22

you fast forward a little bit I had just

4:25

become an assistant principal in my life

4:27

right so I guess we're fast working a

4:29

lot I'm feeling pretty good and I find

4:34

out that my favorite teacher ever my 6th

4:38

grade social studies teacher is retiring

4:42

so I'm like I'm gonna stop by and see

4:44

him that day like that day I found I

4:46

drove to the school I didn't tell him I

4:47

was coming I just went I don't know why

4:49

I did

4:49

he was my favorite teacher he helped me

4:51

through so much in that same time period

4:53

in my life when I went through so much

4:54

so I I just walked no one stopped me it

4:57

was amazing I walk right down the

4:58

hallway right to his old classroom he's

5:00

still there like he always was right I

5:02

opened the door and I go in he looks up

5:05

at me and he goes holy hell well

5:08

actually that's not what he said I can't

5:09

tell you what he said on the stage but

5:11

he said something like that and he comes

5:15

over and he gives me this big hug and he

5:17

says John Muldoon I can't believe you're

5:21

still alive right and I'm like are you

5:29

confusing me with another John Logan but

5:32

but he wasn't and actually the truth is

5:35

that he was he was right we talked a lot

5:38

about it he only knew me at that time

5:41

period in my life

5:42

well I and I got I'll be tell you I was

5:44

so angry right and he he our parting

5:49

thought he left me with

5:54

so he's not around anymore it's a little

5:56

sad to think about but the party thought

5:58

that he left me with was how proud he

6:01

was of seeing me and how happy I seems

6:03

because he said in over 35 years of

6:05

teaching he had never met an anger kid

6:09

than me and it's kind of funny but it's

6:13

also kind of tragic that I remember him

6:15

so fondly and I think about that's his

6:19

memory of me of like all the anger

6:24

anyways the change didn't happen

6:28

overnight for me if you fast forward a

6:31

little bit or actually rewind from when

6:33

I became an assistant principal I was in

6:36

ninth grade I was in high school things

6:38

were still not going well for me I was

6:40

actually angrier than I had been in

6:41

sixth grade was just saying something I

6:44

didn't have any friends I mean I was so

6:47

isolated

6:48

my grades were awful they got I am not

6:52

ashamed to tell you I was just about to

6:55

fail out of high school by the middle of

6:56

the year of my freshman year and I had

7:01

the assist my history teacher another

7:03

history teacher that took an interest in

7:05

me right it's probably my second

7:07

favorite teacher

7:09

maybe why I became a history teacher

7:11

myself actually and he was like a Jedi

7:16

right like I actually like I owe this

7:21

man my life he conducted what I can only

7:25

call psychological warfare on me

7:27

he got me so angry that he tricked me

7:32

into wanting to do well at school I

7:35

don't know how he did it like I think

7:37

about it now I have no idea how it

7:39

happened but it did in the trip I mean

7:43

like please do not underestimate the

7:45

magnitude of this transformation I was

7:48

talking with my counselor about how I

7:49

was not going to be coming back to

7:51

school next year if I didn't turn things

7:52

around right and and all of a sudden I

7:55

was getting all A's and B's and I was

7:58

being nicer to people and I actually

8:00

maybe was working my way towards making

8:02

friends right like actually

8:05

yeah whatever I the transformation it

8:11

was so severe my father sat me down and

8:13

he asked me if I was on drugs right like

8:17

and that's pretty messed up when you

8:19

think like like son

8:21

you know your grades have just gotten

8:23

really good and you know it looks like

8:28

maybe you have some friends now and

8:29

you're not so miserable to be around are

8:31

you on the drugs

8:32

greatly that's that's actually how it

8:34

went

8:37

but this rosy period in my life was not

8:40

destined to last because as I think

8:42

everybody here knows you really can't

8:44

trick a halfway intelligent teenager

8:47

into doing something they don't want to

8:49

do for too long

8:50

and so by the end of the year the the

8:52

gig was up and I had this huge

8:53

confrontation with this teacher which

8:55

like if we're being asked was not smart

8:57

I mean to pick a verbal fight with a

8:59

like Jedi psychological warfare mind

9:02

master but I left the Year feeling so

9:05

angry and deflated and confused and and
