all right everybody this will be part

0:01

two of a two-part Series in which I

0:03

share with you my intellectual and

0:05

spiritual journey in this video I'll be

0:08

discussing my time as a Roman catholic

0:10

christian in the Roman Catholic church

0:12

and ultimately why it is that I chose to

0:14

leave the Roman Catholic Church in part

0:17

one of this series I discussed my

0:19

entrance into the Eastern Orthodox

0:21

Church my time as an Orthodox Christian

0:23

and why it is that I chose to leave the

0:25

the Orthodox church and I'd encourage

0:28

you to watch that video If you haven't

0:30

seen it

0:30

already because the reasons that I give

0:34

there for leaving the Orthodox Church

0:35

were instrumental in my coming into

0:38

communion with the Catholic church so

0:41

I'm not going to go over that again here

0:42

in this

0:43

video now I've sat on sharing as I as I

0:48

said in that verse video I haven't uh

0:50

shared this story publicly for a long

0:52

time uh for a number of reasons but but

0:55

most significantly I think because I

0:57

still have tremendous respect and

0:59

admiration for these

1:00

Traditions Catholic and Orthodox

1:02

churches are um wonderful beautiful

1:05

churches with deep historical roots of

1:08

course deep um intellectual and

1:11

spiritual Wellspring from which to draw

1:14

upon they generally produce I would say

1:16

beautiful Christians some of the most

1:18

extraordinary Christians I've known

1:20

truly have been Catholic Christians very

1:22

thankful for the Catholics that I've

1:24

known in real life in particular um

1:27

they've been very good to me and I trust

1:29

treasure those

1:32

relationships now I'm sharing this story

1:35

I think primarily because in the YouTube

1:38

space there's lots of videos about

1:41

people who become Catholic or become

1:43

Orthodox from a Protestant background

1:46

there's not a lot of videos of people

1:48

going in the other

1:49

direction and certainly not any videos

1:52

very many videos as far as I know of

1:54

people who have been both Roman Catholic

1:56

and Eastern Orthodox and then have

1:59

returned to protestantism so my story is

2:02

unique and because I know so many of you

2:05

are thinking through these issues and

2:08

maybe you're a Protestant or maybe

2:10

you're a Catholic or Orthodox or

2:11

whatever and you're you're wrestling

2:13

with some of the issues and you're

2:15

wondering where you should go whether

2:17

you should stay in your own church your

2:18

own tradition or go somewhere else I

2:21

empathize with the situation that you're

2:23

in it's challenging I know that and

2:25

especially in our internet age where

2:27

there's so much information and that you

2:30

can access there you could just have

2:32

access to ridiculous amounts of

2:35

information it makes this really

2:37

challenging and especially with these

2:39

issues that are um they're they're

2:42

difficult to work through I I I totally

2:45

get it so I hope this video will be a

2:47

help to you if only just because you can

2:50

hear how somebody kind of thought

2:52

through some of these

2:54

things so um I do want to be clear

2:57

though this video Even though I will be

3:01

um it's not pical I don't think but I'll

3:04

be critical as of of the Catholic Church

3:08

espec especially kind of the C Central

3:10

teachings concerning the

3:12

magisterium but I I do it with with

3:14

great again great admiration for that

3:18

Tradition now I entered into full

3:20

communion with the Roman Church back in

3:22

2013 in March of 2013 right at the very

3:25

beginning of francis's pontificate and I

3:29

remember the day that he was elected

3:31

Pope I like many of you probably was was

3:34

glued to my computer screen I was

3:36

eagerly awaiting the news of the papal

3:38

conclave and to be honest with you I

3:41

remember the sinking feeling that I had

3:43

in my stomach as I learned that the new

3:46

pulp was a Jesuit from South America an

3:51

unknown Jesuit from South America I knew

3:55

enough about the Jesuit order to have

3:58

some concerns right the J did not the

4:00

Jesuit order does not have a a a stellar

4:04

reputation among Orthodox Catholics at

4:07

least in the 19th and or I should say

4:09

20th and 21st centuries that's not to

4:12

say of course I know there there are

4:13

some Jesuit priests who are excellent uh

4:16

men of God and faithful Catholics but uh

4:19

the order as a whole is kind of pushing

4:21

the boundaries you could say so I was

4:23

concerned probably again like many of

4:26

you um and little did I know of course

4:30

the

4:32

the disorientation and the confusion

4:35

that would come forth from the Francis

4:39

pontificate which we'll get into here in

4:41

this

4:42

video nevertheless I did of course

4:44

continue forward with this decision I

4:46

had made the decision at the tail end of

4:48

Benedict the 16's

4:51

pontificate and I still decided to go

4:54

through with it and I discovered a small

4:56

community of ordinary at Catholics in

4:59

Fullerton California I was living in

5:01

Southern California at the time and if

5:04

you're coming from Orthodoxy which has

5:07

arguably the most beautiful lurgical

5:09

tradition of any Christian tradition

5:13

into novas Oro Catholicism especially in

5:17

the LA county and Orange County of

5:21

Southern California where the lurgical

5:23

went landscape is uh basically a

5:25

wasteland generally speaking at least it

5:27

was in 2013 I'm not really sure how it

5:30

is now but uh the ordinar at Parish was

5:34

um an oasis in the desert and for those

5:38

of you that are unaware the ordinariate

5:40

refers to a jurisdiction within the

5:43

Catholic Church specifically designed

5:45

for anglicans who wanted to come into

5:47

the Catholic Church while at the same

5:49

time maintaining some of their lurgical

5:52

spiritual patrimony Anglican patrimony

5:55

and bringing that into the Catholic

5:57

church so there was a small Parish of

5:59

ordinary Catholics in Fullerton very

6:03

very small Parish like 30 people maybe

6:05

we'd meet at a Sunday School classroom

6:08

of a local Roman Catholic parish kind of

6:11

kind of Rinky Dink but um the Liturgy

6:14

itself was quite beautiful of course

6:17

with elements from the book of common

6:18

prayer which I have come to to love and

6:23

cherish but the community there solid

6:26

Christian people got to know them well

6:27

the priest got to know him well thankful

6:29

for his ministry to me very very good

6:32

priest and different of course unique

6:35

from different from the typical novas

6:37

Ordo experience which is like parishes

6:39

are on average 3,000 people and ours was

6:43

was very small

6:44

comparatively now I was of course

6:47

keeping up with church news and very

6:49

quickly into francis's pontificate

6:52

things took a a bad turn so if you

6:54

remember July of 2013 the very

6:58

beginning we had that that Infamous who

7:01

am I to judge statement

7:03

and well I'm not in this video I'm not

7:06

going to focus on the lony of scandalous

7:09

things that have happened under the

7:11

reign of of Pope Francis and things

7:15

coming from his very mouth or actions

7:18

that he's that he's

7:19

taken I want to focus on one in

7:22

particular I'll get to it in a few

7:23

minutes but but just for the time being

7:26

that who am I to judge statement is a

7:28

kind of a perfect

7:30

encapsulation of

7:32

the of the of the one of the problems of

7:35

the Francis pontificate namely the

7:38

confusion and disorientation that swn

7:40

through ambiguity right so that

7:43

statement if you recall it was ambiguous

7:46

and it could be taken in an orthodox

7:48

manner or it could be taken in an

7:50

unorthodox manner we know of course how

7:52

the media took it causing great um harm

7:56

it seemed to me upon the reputation the

7:58

Dignity of the pap office and the

8:00

Dignity of the of the Roman Catholic

8:03

church and harm to the Catholic faithful

8:07

and this was um a situation that became

8:10

pretty pretty normal within my Catholic

8:13

experience over the last I should say I

8:16

was I left the Catholic church in 2020

8:19

so for my seven years of being a cath

8:22

formerly left it in 2020 so my seven

8:24

years of being a Catholic pretty typical
