No Canadian flag out here.

0:09

This is probably where that federal flag

0:11

[music] should be.

0:13

But it ain't there.

0:15

This is Saskatchewan [music] flag flying

0:17

proud out here.

0:20

Good for them.

0:23

That should be a Western flag.

0:28

That's the flag he was hung on there

0:30

basically.

0:49

>> [music]

0:49

>> Hey everybody, it's PJ. I'm out here in

0:52

Central Saskatchewan on the road.

0:55

Figured I'd would show you guys a little

0:57

piece of history that's just aside of

0:59

Bladworth out here again in Central

1:02

Saskatchewan.

1:03

Before there was any talk of

1:06

independence, any talk of modern

1:08

independence in Alberta and

1:09

Saskatchewan, there was this man right

1:11

here.

1:13

Legendary Louis Riel

1:15

who fought for the rights of the Métis

1:17

people, founder of Manitoba

1:20

who fought against the overreaching

1:23

Federation of Canada, the overreaching

1:25

federal government of Ontario and

1:28

Quebec, upper Canada.

1:31

And he basically lost his life in

1:34

fighting for that. He was hung in

1:38

public. If you are on the highway

1:41

between Saskatoon and Regina, like

1:44

myself make sure you stop and make a

1:47

left if you're going north-south in

1:49

Bladworth

1:50

and um learn a little bit of history

1:53

from one of the first freedom fighters

1:56

out in the west. Say what you will.

1:58

He wasn't a perfect man, but he was

2:00

fighting for Western independence before

2:04

any of the movements of today. Louis

2:07

Riel, know the name, know your history.

2:10

Riel was a central figure in the

2:12

province's history leading two popular

2:14

Métis governments and bringing Manitoba

2:17

into Confederation. He was later

2:19

executed for high treason for his role

2:21

in the 1885 resistance to Canadian

2:24

encroachment on Métis lands. CTV's Alex

2:28

Skarpa has more on the events marking

2:30

this day. We have a few personal pieces

2:33

that belong to Riel himself. Winnipeg's

2:35

Saint Boniface Museum is home to some of

2:38

Manitoba's oldest and best preserved

2:40

artifacts, including ones belonging to

2:42

Louis Riel, the founder of Manitoba.

2:44

This is one of Riel's trunks. Riel is

2:47

regarded as a complex and controversial

2:49

figure in Canadian history. He led two

2:51

Métis resistances in what is now

2:53

present-day Manitoba and Saskatchewan

2:56

fighting to protect Métis rights and

2:58

culture. Riel was an instrumental person

3:01

in terms of the negotiations with the

3:04

government. He made a list of rights

3:07

that would encompass all peoples who

3:09

were living here at the time in the

3:11

settlement. That list became the

3:13

foundation for what is known today as

3:15

the Manitoba Act, but Riel was seen as a

3:17

traitor for his resistance. He was

3:19

hanged for treason at just 41 years old

3:22

in 1885. Now he is celebrated in

3:25

Manitoba, recognized as the province's

3:27

founder, and was named first honorary

3:29

premier in 2023. All of our history is

3:32

important, not only Riel, not only Métis

3:34

people, but all of our histories

3:36

combined.

3:36

>> Riel's history and culture is on full

3:39

display here at Winnipeg's Festival du

3:41

Voyageur, which is Western Canada's

3:44

largest winter festival.

3:47

Live music

3:50

and woodworking are just some of the

3:52

events featured at the festival. Breanne

3:54

Lavallee-Hecquart says it's important to

3:56

honor Riel through all of the festival's

3:58

different events. Our founder, Joseph

4:00

Riel, was a a proud Métis man. Um so

4:03

really it's it's really it's it's rooted

4:05

in everything we do here at Festival,

4:06

but especially today on Louis Riel Day.

4:08

>> As for Cindy Desrochers, she says she

4:10

will continue to educate others on

4:12

Riel's legacy.

4:37

No Canadian flag out here.

4:40

This is probably where that federal flag

4:42

[music] should be.

4:44

But it ain't there.

4:47

This is Saskatchewan flag [music] flying

4:48

proud out here.

4:52

Good for them.

4:58

You have

5:00

another statue [music]

5:03

of Mr. Louis Riel

5:06

Western

5:08

legend.

5:19

Western revolutionnaire

5:21

fought for the rights

5:24

of Westerners

5:25

in the 1880s.

5:29

Surveyor

5:31

talking about

5:32

how the settlement continued westward in

5:35

the 1860s and 70s

5:37

how a lot of Westerners and Métis

5:39

[music] indigenous people were being

5:41

screwed

5:42

by the federal government

5:45

and how that was in part reason

5:49

for

5:50

the Northwest Rebellion

5:53

led by Mr. Louis Riel.

5:58

Is this out here

6:00

in

6:01

Chamberlain

6:05

out here in Chamberlain, Saskatchewan.

6:08

It's

6:09

Louis Riel Highway

6:13

heading

6:14

south

6:16

about 100 km north of

6:19

the city of Regina.

6:21

Yes, Regina, not Regina, Regina.

6:25

Pretty sure that's the Saskatchewan

6:27

flower.

6:28

Not sure what the name of that flower is

6:30

if you're from Saskatchewan, if you're a

6:32

Saskatchewanian

6:35

um

6:37

I don't know what that's called. If you

6:38

can chime in whether that's your flower

6:40

and what it's called or whether it is

6:41

just called Saskatchewanian or

6:43

Saskatchewan.

6:45

Let me know

6:46

fellow Westerner.

6:49

So what's going to happen with

6:50

Saskatchewan when Alberta votes to leave

6:52

Canada? Freedom, hope, prosperity for

6:54

our children, for their futures cuz

6:56

right now in Canada it's a sinking ship

6:58

and if we don't take our little

6:59

lifeboats and throw it out and get off

7:00

while we can, we're going down with the

7:01

ship.

7:02

>> You see, there's a lot going on out here

7:03

in the prairies.

7:05

Alberta and Saskatchewan

7:07

some parts of British Columbia.

7:09

See, my province here of Alberta

7:12

is going to have a referendum later this

7:14

year. Officially, we're going to have a

7:16

referendum on independence, whether a

7:18

majority of Albertans choose to stay a

7:21

part of Canada

7:23

or become an independent nation.

7:25

And a lot of people wonder, well, what

7:26

happens with Saskatchewan?

7:28

Saskatchewan being a province

7:31

neighboring province to the east of

7:32

Alberta

7:34

about an hour

7:35

that way, 100 km or so that way

7:38

being that I'm in

7:39

eastern central Alberta.

7:42

And more importantly, they're very

7:44

similar to Alberta culturally,

7:48

politically economically.

7:51

They voted over 90% conservative just

7:53

like Albertans did.

7:55

They are very conservative-minded.

7:58

Mostly a Christian province

8:00

just like Alberta. And while Albertans

8:02

are collecting signatures for a petition

8:05

to get a referendum likely in October of

8:08

this year

8:09

Saskatchewan is not far behind. Hall

8:11

near Saskatoon, over 200 people have

8:14

come to hear from the Saskatchewan

8:15

Prosperity Project, a group promoting

8:18

Saskatchewan's independence from Canada.

8:21

The group's president, Brad Williams,

8:23

focuses on Western alienation and what

8:25

he says are the economic and political

8:28

benefits of separation.

8:29

>> So the reality of this situation is that

8:31

the people of Saskatchewan and Albertans
