We do have a very special guest today,

0:01

Warren Buffett, uh the chairman of

0:03

Berkshire Hathaway, former CEO of

0:06

Bergkshire Hathaway, and this is the

0:07

first time that we are sitting down with

0:08

him since he stepped down from that CE

0:10

role.

0:12

Warren, welcome. It is wonderful to see

0:14

you this morning.

0:14

>> It's fun to be on.

0:16

>> You are on um for an interesting reason.

0:18

For 22 years, you had been holding an

0:22

annual lunchon, an auction for a lunchon

0:26

to benefit the Glide Foundation in San

0:28

Francisco. You retired from that from

0:30

doing that back in 2022 after you'd

0:32

raised more than $50 million. I think

0:34

the last auction that you raised that

0:36

you did raised 19 million $100 for the

0:41

Glide Foundation and you kind of hung it

0:43

up and said that was going to be the

0:45

end. You are back with a new

0:46

announcement today that there is a new

0:48

auction that is coming with a twist.

0:50

This time it's Warren Buffett, Stephen

0:52

Curry, and Aisha Curry. and they're

0:54

going to be having a new lunchon to

0:56

benefit not only the Glide Foundation

0:58

but the Curry's Foundation as well,

1:00

which is eat, learn, play. And um this

1:03

auction is going to be held May 7th. It

1:05

starts at 7:30 p.m. Pacific time. It

1:07

closes on May 14th at 7:30 p.m. exactly.

1:11

And all of the benefits of that is going

1:13

to go to benefit these two foundations,

1:15

Glide and the Eat, Learn, Play

1:18

Foundation. How did this come about? Why

1:20

did you unretire from this? Well, let me

1:23

tell you first how I got into it. Uh

1:25

because uh my my first wife Susie was

1:29

living in San Francisco and and she said

1:34

to me, "This guy is real." and and and

1:38

uh

1:38

>> this guy being Cecil

1:40

get the out Cecil Williams

1:42

>> who came to that church

1:45

in 1963

1:48

and it was a dying church in a changing

1:53

part of the neighborhood in San

1:55

Francisco and uh they weren't glad to

1:59

see him uh the 100 or so parishioners

2:03

that were left but he turned it into

2:06

something that uh

2:10

became

2:12

uh

2:14

it it it it it gave hope and life to

2:17

people that the world had given up on.

2:20

And uh and I went on Sunday still

2:25

expecting

2:26

something less than that. And uh uh I

2:31

watched Cecil and uh I could see what he

2:35

was doing and he he was for real and so

2:41

uh Susie at some point said uh why don't

2:45

you do something to raise some money for

2:48

him, you know, and and so I think she

2:50

actually

2:52

selected the idea of the launch and then

2:54

we did the launch. The first three

2:56

launches brought $25,000 each because

2:59

they were localized. And then we got the

3:02

idea of going on eBay and uh then we

3:07

started getting bids from around the

3:08

world and uh uh it just

3:13

generally kept moving up although it

3:15

wasn't every single year but it it just

3:18

it just put us on the map. and uh uh and

3:23

as the final

3:25

amount 19 million uh was raised. Now

3:29

that was kind of raised because it was

3:31

the last one I think I was doing and a

3:34

fellow bought it that had bought an

3:37

earlier lunch but but uh I didn't make

3:42

any calls to him or do anything. just uh

3:45

turned out to be it inspires people and

3:49

and uh Smith and Winsky as you know

3:52

covered in New York sometimes. Well,

3:54

that's often where you had the lunch

3:56

with with the winners of this

3:58

>> and some of them wanted to be an u

4:00

anonymous

4:01

>> and uh a couple came to Omaha

4:07

uh along the line

4:11

uh

4:12

because they had some special thing they

4:15

wanted to talk about. But uh I think

4:18

everybody felt they they were glad they

4:20

did it and I was glad to do it. And

4:23

>> so why'd you stop?

4:24

>> Well, I ran out of gas and [laughter]

4:27

I I I you know I I got to be what 93 at

4:31

that time or something like that. And

4:33

and it just same reason I gave up

4:36

teaching. I teach I was I taught every

4:38

year from when I was 21 till

4:42

88 or ' 89. And there just came a period

4:45

when your body's had different things to

4:48

you. and and you should turn it over to

4:51

somebody just like I did a virtue. I

4:54

mean it it at different times on

4:56

different things, but I and so we

4:59

thought we had a continuation of it all

5:02

set up and then for one reason or

5:05

another it fizzled and and uh so the

5:09

last two years they well I think the

5:11

first year some board member made up

5:13

some members but basically they the

5:15

auction disappeared and

5:17

>> so they haven't had the funds coming in.

5:19

>> No. and and uh and Cecil Williams was

5:23

about my age the that all this and uh it

5:30

got so I couldn't understand him on the

5:32

phone or anything like that but all he

5:34

wanted was just to continue and so uh uh

5:40

I don't know where the idea came from

5:42

exactly but I said I would do one more

5:46

just to get it started again and and to

5:49

have South Curry I mean join us. I mean

5:54

uh in the Bay Area I mean it it's just a

5:57

natural and and uh

5:59

>> right the EatLearn Play Foundation that

6:01

Stephan and Aisha Curry have set up is

6:04

in the Bay Area as well. So they're

6:07

locally focused on all of these things.

6:08

For people who don't know the Glide

6:10

Foundation was also um [clears throat]

6:12

it was highlighted in the movie The

6:13

Pursuit of Happiness with Will Smith. So

6:16

people may have a little bit of an idea

6:17

what that's about. Um why Steph Curry?

6:20

How how how did that come about?

6:22

>> I mean

6:24

who can say it better? I mean he's

6:26

worked with the kids in Oakland. I mean

6:28

these are kids between five and 15 or

6:32

something like that and he plays

6:34

basketball with him and I mean he's a

6:36

terrific guy. I don't you know I haven't

6:39

met him personally. We

6:40

>> But you did talk to Stephan. We had a

6:42

long talk on the phone and

6:44

>> and uh and it's his baby and he can

6:48

carry it forth and uh uh incidentally

6:53

whatever is bid this year I will make an

6:57

equal cont I don't think Seth doesn't

6:59

know this but but but uh I will make an

7:02

equal contribution to both glide and

7:07

>> to uh the foundation

7:10

>> and you

7:11

just go on to new heights. I mean, and

7:13

and and uh Seth is the hero of

7:19

millions and millions of people, you

7:21

know, that uh uh so I think it I really

7:25

think it'll it'll work. I think it'll

7:27

continue to be what Cecil hoped it to

7:30

be. And

7:31

>> Mhm. And uh uh it would have killed me

7:36

to have it just die off and and and

7:41

as much what Cecil poured into it

7:43

himself,

7:45

>> he believed

7:47

everybody was worthwhile and the world

7:50

had given up on these people and he's he

7:53

may have started giving a little bit of

7:55

food to him, but before he got through

7:56

he was doing all these things at at at

7:59

the glide

8:01

And uh uh he never gave up on anybody.

8:07

>> And I know you said that Astred really

8:09

liked him too.

8:10

>> Oh yeah. Yeah. Well, it it uh is my

8:13

second wife and and and and uh uh you

8:18

couldn't help

8:20

but like him. I mean, when you watched

8:22

him up there with people that the world

8:25

had given up on and and he says to him,

8:30

"I'll feed you.

8:32

I'll have a bed for you. We'll have a

8:34

vocation for you. You know, we're not

8:37

going to give up on you." And uh and

8:40

never did.

8:42

>> Warren, this is the first time that

8:43

we're sitting down with you since you

8:45

stepped down from the position of CEO of

8:48

Berkshire Hathway. Yeah. Um it was a

8:50

long long run, very successful run. How

8:53

is your life different today?

8:56

>> Well, it's not much different in except

8:58

[laughter] for the I mean I go in every

9:00

day

9:00

>> to the office.
