You went to, you attended seminars and you said

0:02

your reason there was to learn more about yourself.

0:05

[Bob] Yeah.

0:05

My experience has been people attend seminars

0:08

especially self-development seminars to look for the answer.

0:11

They wanna know, what is it out there I can learn

0:14

so that I can be more successful?

0:16

That wasn't your motivation?

0:17

No, no, oddly enough.

0:18

And, I think probably you're right.

0:20

I think that's what most people are looking for.

0:21

I think they're looking for an answer

0:22

outside of themself and they're never going to find it.

0:26

I think by this time I realized it was something in me.

0:29

I met a man here in Toronto.

0:31

He was the one that originally got me involved

0:33

in studying this, Ray Stanford.

0:35

And, he told me if I didn't like the results I was getting

0:37

in my life, that I was going to have to change me

0:40

because they were my results.

0:43

And, he said, if you're gonna change you,

0:44

you're gonna have to find out something about yourself.

0:47

And, that seemed to make sense.

0:50

I don't think it was an earth-shattering idea.

0:52

It wouldn't give anybody a brain hernia,

0:54

but it made a hell of a lot of sense to me.

0:56

So, I started to study myself.

0:57

I found most people don't know who they are.

1:00

They really don't.

1:01

What do you mean?

1:02

I mean, I know my name, I know my age, I know where I live.

1:04

What else is there-- - Yeah that's not you though.

1:06

That's just it. - I know what size (mumbles).

1:08

If you ask the average person who they are,

1:09

they'll give you their name.

1:10

They'll say I'm Bob Proctor, but I'm not.

1:13

Bob and Proctor are two words.

1:14

My parents gave them to me.

1:15

They're called names but it's not me, it's my name.

1:19

Then somebody'll say well this is me,

1:20

but this isn't me either, it's my body.

1:23

Like you never phone down here to the studio

1:25

and say, "Body won't be in today, it's sick."

1:27

[Tom] (chuckling) Okay.

1:28

You know we don't say am hand or am leg.

1:30

We say my hand, my leg, my body, my name.

1:34

Who am I?

1:36

Well that's an interesting question.

1:38

And I believe if a person will start to study that

1:41

and look for the answer, they'll find it.

1:43

See, I think we live simultaneously

1:45

on three planes of understanding.

1:47

We're spiritual creatures, we have an intellect,

1:49

and we live in physical bodies.

1:52

Okay.

1:53

But, because we lack awareness or understanding

1:55

of who we are, we're totally locked into

1:57

a physical world and we let things

1:59

outside of us control us.

2:01

95% of the population are reacting to life

2:03

they're not really living at all.

2:05

[Tom] Okay, and would you call that

2:06

one of the barriers to success?

2:07

Oh there's no question about it.

2:09

I think there's two barriers.

2:10

Success is a funny word.

2:13

Nightingale had a great definition for it.

2:14

He said, "A person's successful if they know where they are

2:18

and they know where they're going,

2:20

"nd they're progressively moving in that direction."

2:22

He said that success was "the progressive realization

2:25

"of a worthy ideal."

2:26

Anyone that has a goal and they're moving towards it,

2:28

they're successful.

2:30

Most people think that you're successful

2:32

if you have a lot of money.

2:33

Quite often you have a lot of money if you're successful,

2:35

but it isn't, I wouldn't say Mother Teresa

2:38

has a lot of money, you know,

2:40

but she's a pretty successful lady.

2:42

So, it's--

2:44

So, that barrier to success

2:45

is reacting-- - Well there's

2:46

a couple them. - Okay.

2:47

I think there's two barriers.

2:48

One is our conditioning, the conditioning

2:50

that takes place in our subconscious mind

2:52

from the time we're infants.

2:54

All we can do is act and talk like the people around us.

2:58

That's why we learn the language we learn.

3:00

If there was 10 languages spoken in our home,

3:03

we'd learn 10 languages without any trouble.

3:06

There's usually one and that's the only one we ever learn

3:08

and we grow older and we think,

3:09

oh I couldn't learn another language.

3:10

We could learn 100 if we wanted to.

3:12

You can do anything.

3:13

But, I think we're conditioned.

3:14

We have a real strong conditioning

3:17

usually with not some very good ideas.

3:20

And, then that's the barrier that's inside us.

3:24

The one that's outside of us is our environment.

3:26

We have a tendency to act like everybody around us.

3:30

And, if you think about this,

3:31

it doesn't make a lot of sense.

3:33

Because if you study statistics, 95% of the people

3:36

live their entire life and never live the way

3:38

they want to live.

3:40

Did you know that 95% of the population in this country,

3:42

let's say in North America.

3:43

Okay.

3:44

The richest continent in the history of the world.

3:46

They all work productively, let's say for 40

3:49

of their 65 years.

3:50

Okay.

3:51

And, they all end up with hardly any money.

3:54

Well there's gotta be something wrong.

3:57

So, there's not much--

3:57

About 5% of the people end up

3:59

financially comfortable or independent.

4:02

Are you trying to depress us, Bob?

4:04

'Cause that's--

4:04

No, actually I think it's quite an exciting idea

4:08

because you see the idea behind it is that anybody

4:11

can win, anyone at all.

4:13

But, if we start studying these statistics,

4:15

I think we'll arrive at the conclusion,

4:17

geez, I better start thinking for myself

4:19

rather than follow everybody.

4:20

Most people they get a job, they look around,

4:22

they see how everybody else is doing their work,

4:24

and they start doing it the same way.

4:26

They should stop and think, I wonder if any of these people

4:27

know what they're doing?

4:28

You know, is there a better way to do it?

4:31

But, don't we have a need to fit in?

4:32

I mean, we don't wanna stand out,

4:34

we don't wanna get fired, we don't wanna make waves.

4:36

Exactly, exactly, just fall into line,

4:39

you know, take a number, be like everybody around.

4:42

You know, that'd be great in the animal kingdom,

4:45

but human beings aren't supposed to live that way.

4:47

I think we should make a few waves.

4:49

We should maybe stand out, be different.

4:51

Not for the sake of being different.

4:53

[Tom] Okay.

4:54

But, because we are different.

4:55

We all think different thoughts

4:58

and I believe we should start to think

5:00

and build images in our mind of what we'd like to do

5:03

and then set out and do it.

5:04

Okay let me--

5:05

Emerson did that, Edison did that, Marconi did that,

5:07

Samuel Morris did that.

5:10

Buckminister Fuller did that.

5:11

We could go on and on and on and on.

5:13

[Tom] Okay.

5:14

They were different, they stood out,

5:14

they made a few waves.

5:16

Okay, you started with you say,

5:18

you started with a search for yourself,

5:20

to try to find our more about yourself.

5:22

And, you were somewhat successful along the way.

5:25

Well, I didn't start it like that in the beginning.

5:26

I started that I wanted to earn a lot of money.

5:28

I figured if I had enough money I was gonna

5:30

cure all my problems.

5:31

I found that that wasn't true.

5:33

I earned a fair amount of problems, or money

5:34

and I seemed to have more problems.

5:37

But, I, after working at this

5:41

for a few years I decided that the real answer

5:43

is get to know yourself a little better.

5:45

[Tom] Okay.

5:45

And, I don't think you have to go off

5:46

in the Himalayas and become a guru to do that.

5:49

Okay, what did you do to learn about yourself?

5:50

You said you went around to as many seminars as you could.

5:52

I attended seminars.

5:53

I went and listened to different speakers

5:55

who taught something about the mind.

5:58

I think the answer's in our mind.

6:00

If we all start studying

6:01

and trying to understand our mind.

6:03

Okay let me get back to you if I can.

6:05

What did you learn about Bob Proctor during that study?

6:08

Well, I learned that the biggest part of me,

6:10

you'll never see.

6:12

It's non-physical.

6:14

And, what you see here in the physical body

6:17

is nothing but the physical manifestation

6:20

of the higher side of my personality.

6:22

And, of course that's true with you

6:23

and Nancy that's on the camera.

6:25

It's true of everyone.

6:28

And, what we have to study, I think,

6:30

is how does this non-physical part of my mind work?

6:35

What happens when I think?

6:37

Where do thoughts come from?

6:39

How was this chair built?
