0:00

okay so today we're going to be talking

0:01

about the focal batis mg this is the

0:04

followup from the original focal batis

0:07

which was fal's sort of first entry into

0:10

the you know Wireless noise cancelling

0:12

world and this is not just a new

0:14

colorway for the ba platform this is an

0:17

entirely different thing it's certainly

0:18

a lot more expensive but the question is

0:21

is it actually better well in today's

0:22

video that's what we're going to find

0:24

out so let's get

0:26

[Music]

0:28

going okay so where is this unit from

0:30

this is a demo unit provided by focal

0:32

for review big thanks to focal for

0:34

sending it in for me to check out of

0:36

course I haven't been paid to say

0:37

anything in particular about it and all

0:38

thoughts and opinions here are my own

0:40

okay let's get right into the review

0:41

here and the first thing you guys are

0:42

going to notice is that the new batist

0:44

mg looks similar but also different it

0:47

has this new aesthetic to it in terms of

0:50

its color scheme for you know the cups

0:52

the yolks you know the sort of external

0:54

structure to it and the headband as well

0:56

and also the pads uh but as far as the

0:59

rest of the mechanical and Industrial

1:00

design is concerned here this is

1:02

basically the same now I've kind of been

1:04

going back and forth as to which one I

1:05

like the look of better uh there is

1:07

something visually striking or more

1:09

striking about this new bronze and brown

1:13

color scheme that they have going on

1:14

here but the big difference here that

1:16

most folks will notice right away is

1:17

that the pad deformation the pad

1:20

compliance is very different between the

1:22

two headphones so with the original

1:23

batist it was already quite compliant

1:26

for the pads but with the new one it's

1:29

extreme ly compliant like just the

1:31

tiniest little bit of force and it'll

1:33

completely depress the pads and this

1:35

does have an impact on both the sound

1:38

and the Comfort imagine you have the

1:40

softest and most Supple feeling things

1:42

in the world gently pressing into the

1:45

side of your head and caressing the side

1:47

of your ears it's a nice feeling I'm not

1:49

going to go into any more detail on that

1:51

but one slight downside with the more

1:54

compliant pad design is that because the

1:57

pads compress and deform more easily

2:00

the backside of my PA does touch the

2:03

inside of the baffle just ever so

2:05

slightly on the bati mg while it doesn't

2:08

on the original batis because the pads

2:10

are a little bit stiffer here um they're

2:12

still very compliant but they're not

2:13

quite as compliant so yeah I do this and

2:16

my ear doesn't touch the inside of the

2:17

baffle with this one at all so if you

2:19

have large ears or you know if you're

2:20

really sensitive to the backside of your

2:22

P touching the inside of the baffle that

2:24

is something to consider I will note

2:26

though relative to the competition for

2:27

the vast majority of ANC headphones my

2:30

ear also touches the inside of the

2:31

baffle and you do get much larger pad

2:34

openings with the with this platform

2:36

here than most ANC headphones so it

2:39

doesn't feel like an on-ear headphone it

2:41

actually feels like a proper eree

2:42

headphone so for overall Comfort I would

2:44

say this is very very good um but just

2:47

keep in mind that one little little

2:49

scrungle about the backside of the PA

2:51

touching the inside of the baffle if you

2:52

have large ears just keep that in mind

2:54

one other nice thing about the increased

2:56

pad compliance here is that it is going

2:59

to have a little a little bit of an

3:00

easier time creating a seal for people

3:02

who wear glasses um and conforming

3:04

around any you know weird Contours that

3:07

people might have to the side of the

3:08

head while this doesn't mean that it's

3:09

going to be more consistent across the

3:11

entire Spectrum certainly when it comes

3:13

to the seal Integrity it is likely to be

3:16

more consistent on the bati mg and

3:19

that's also a good thing now one

3:21

criticism that I have of both of these

3:22

is that I wish the top headband strap

3:24

could be just a little bit wider to

3:26

distribute the weight a little bit

3:27

better but for folks with smaller heads

3:29

I'm going to recommend checking out the

3:31

Capra strap um that's something that

3:33

works for some of their other headphones

3:35

that have this kind of design like the

3:37

auris and the Hennis um for larger heads

3:40

that won't work at all like for my head

3:41

that strap doesn't fit but for the

3:43

headlights out there who are hoping to

3:44

wear these all day that might be

3:45

something worth checking out now let's

3:47

get into the sound quality but just

3:48

before I do I want to give a big shout

3:49

out to headphones.com who makes all of

3:51

these videos possible for folks who are

3:53

unaware headphones.com is the place to

3:55

learn about and buy headphones it's

3:56

where you can learn about things like

3:57

diffuse field or the head related

3:59

transfer function but also they have an

4:01

absolutely ridiculous 365-day return

4:03

policy rather than being just another

4:04

audio store they wanted to be a resource

4:06

for the community making headphones.com

4:08

a place that people could buy headphones

4:10

knowing that they would get something

4:11

they would like at the end of the day

4:12

without being locked into a purchase

4:13

that didn't fit with their preferences

4:15

and if you find anything that we do on

4:16

this channel here useful or valuable to

4:18

you in some way please support us by

4:20

checking out headphones.com for your

4:21

next audio purchase so how does the

4:23

batist mg sound and there was their

4:25

earlier release of the clear mg versus

4:28

the original clear and some of us liked

4:30

the original clear better some liked the

4:31

new clear better I was in the camp that

4:33

preferred the original uh with these two

4:36

with the batis mg I'm pretty sure that

4:38

just about everybody is going to prefer

4:40

the batis mg over the original batis

4:42

it's just straightforwardly better than

4:45

the original it is smoother throughout

4:46

the mid-range it's a more balanced sound

4:48

overall um they fixed some of the

4:50

frequency response related quirks with

4:52

the original BSE making it overall just

4:55

a much uh more cohesive and versatile

4:58

experience and I'm going to get into the

5:00

nerd here in a moment because

5:01

there's some interesting things going on

5:03

with this platform first the general

5:04

sound signature here for the batist mg

5:07

is a warm Rich euphonic kind of

5:10

presentation that is highly detailed

5:13

while at the same time being a little

5:15

bit on the thick side of things

5:17

particularly to do with a forward

5:19

character in the lower mid-range when

5:21

I'm listening to anything that has piano

5:23

tones or any recordings that have

5:26

acoustic guitars instrumental music of

5:28

any kind and also C vocal music as well

5:31

I'm specifically thinking of the James

5:33

Blake recordings like retrograde the

5:35

mid-range here is absolutely incredible

5:38

and a meaningful step up over the

5:40

original batis um the original could

5:43

occasionally come across a little bit on

5:46

the you know Honky or glary side of

5:48

things depending on the the recording

5:49

that you were listening to um because it

5:51

does have some additional quirks and

5:52

colorations throughout the mid-range

5:54

that's entirely gone with the batist mg

5:57

now the base here is elevated it's full

6:00

rich not quite as elevated in the

6:02

subbase as the original batis but the

6:04

extra compliance to the pads is likely

6:06

going to make that bass response a

6:08

little bit more consistent but overall

6:10

the bass profile here is pretty similar

6:12

my main criticism of both of these

6:13

headphones has to do with the transition

6:15

between the base and the lower mids I

6:17

think it is a little bit too far forward

6:19

on both of them it tends to walk that

6:21

line a little bit for me between thick

6:23

and boomy and it's not quite that kind

6:25

of tight and tactile base that I usually

6:28

prefer

6:30

however with that said this is also very

6:32

dynamically intense it's very impactful

6:34

it's the sort of flaring effect that

6:37

when it works it really works but that

6:39

doesn't mean it always does I'm thinking

6:42

of times when I'm listening to my jazz
