With me are the new MacBook Airs with

0:02

M5. Now, I've been using the 13-in as my

0:04

daily driver, probably for the last two

0:06

weeks or so, and guys, it really caught

0:08

me by surprise. I have to say, I

0:11

absolutely love it. The Air is just the

0:13

sweet spot. It is the laptop that most

0:15

people should buy. It really does just

0:18

get the basics right. It's very

0:20

portable. It's got plenty of performance

0:22

for light use. Everything's going to

0:23

feel very snappy on it. You can even run

0:25

professional apps so long as the

0:27

projects you're working on are simple.

0:29

And in a world where Windows laptops are

0:31

just going up in price, it's awesome

0:32

that the Airs really haven't. So, in

0:35

2026, the Air, it just brings tremendous

0:37

value to the table. Compared to the Neo

0:40

and Air is a much safer buy. Compared to

0:42

Windows laptops, they still can't get it

0:44

right. Sure, they may have bells and

0:46

whistles that the Air doesn't, like an

0:48

OLED screen, but they also have a lot of

0:49

cons that as a whole just makes them

0:51

worse. Take Dell's XPS14. It would have

0:54

destroyed this laptop if it didn't have

0:56

a crap keyboard and cost an arm and a

0:58

leg. At least for the config we

1:00

recommend with the XJ chip and a tandem

1:02

OLED screen. That being said, I would

1:04

avoid specking up the Air to try and

1:06

make it something it isn't. There's just

1:08

a limit to the Air's performance, and

1:09

adding more memory, it may not help.

1:12

Apple's upgrades are also very

1:13

expensive, and they significantly reduce

1:15

the laptop's main selling point, which

1:17

is its incredible value. With that said,

1:19

here's my review. But first, a very

1:21

quick thank you to Best Buy who helped

1:23

us get these in. Folks, we spent tens of

1:26

thousands of dollars this year buying

1:28

pretty much every MacBook and every

1:30

configuration of MacBook for our

1:31

reviews, and we've got a lot of content

1:33

coming. So, it was really nice that Best

1:35

Buy helped out here. All right, since

1:37

the M5 chip is basically the main thing

1:39

that's new here, I'm going to start with

1:40

Geekbench. It pretty much tests a bunch

1:43

of common performance tasks. It doesn't

1:45

push the laptop to its limits though,

1:47

which is why in this test, the Air with

1:48

the M5 performs around the same as the

1:51

MacBook Pro 14, also with the M5.

1:53

Compared to last year's MacBook Air with

1:55

M4, this new one it's around 13 to 15%

1:58

faster. So, a modest bump up. If you are

2:00

upgrading from an older Air with M1 or

2:02

M2, the bump though, it is really

2:04

significant. It's around twice the

2:06

multi-core performance. If you're open

2:08

to what Windows has to offer, Intel's

2:10

new Panther Lake H chips, they do trade

2:12

blows with M5. In this test, their

2:14

multi-core performance, it is similar.

2:16

However, Apple still wins in single

2:18

core. But those Panther Lake H chips,

2:21

they're often found in more expensive

2:22

laptops. You see, Apple's MacBook Airs,

2:25

they cover a large price range that does

2:27

include some of those, but it also

2:28

includes plenty of the lower-end non-Hel

2:31

chips. So, we've added two versions of

2:33

Dell's XPS here with each of those

2:35

chips. You can see that the M5 chip, it

2:38

smashes that non-Hb Intel chip. Okay,

2:41

moving on to Cinebench, which maxes out

2:43

the laptop's performance. There are a

2:45

couple of big takeaways here. Firstly,

2:47

the MacBook Air with M5 is not that much

2:49

faster than the Air with M4, at least

2:51

again, not in this test. The MacBook Pro

2:54

14 with the M5 chip, it does beat the

2:56

Air by around 25%. It has the same

2:58

number of CPU cores, which is what this

3:00

test tests. Now, the reason for this

3:03

difference is because the Pro has a fan

3:04

to call its processor. This means it can

3:06

feed it more power for longer. It feeds

3:08

it an average of 26 watts, whereas the

3:11

Air averages at 12 W. That being said,

3:14

there are huge diminishing marginal

3:15

returns of doing this. The CPU just

3:17

becomes far less efficient. You're

3:19

essentially feeding it 117% more power

3:22

for 25% more performance. Not worth.

3:25

Back on Cinebench for sustained high

3:28

performance loads, Intel and AMD's

3:29

performance chips, they do have an edge

3:31

over M5. That's in overall multi-core

3:33

performance, not single core. Now, as I

3:36

said, the Air straddles the price of

3:37

Windows laptops with these chips and

3:39

less powerful ones. If you are comparing

3:41

the base Air to a nonH Intel chip, one

3:44

with eight cores, not 16, the Air just

3:46

smashes it. In terms of power efficiency

3:49

in this test, the M5 chip when in the

3:51

air, it is significantly more power

3:53

efficient than what Intel and AMD have

3:54

on offer. Now, if you think getting the

3:57

M5 chip in the larger 15-in Air would

3:59

mean it would perform better because it

4:01

has a larger surface area to cool the

4:02

processor, well, you'd be wrong. It's a

4:04

rounding error when it comes to the

4:06

difference. And if you're considering

4:07

the Neo, you can see how poor its max

4:09

CPU performance is. If you're coming

4:11

from any MacBook Air with the M3 chip

4:13

onwards, it's a major jump up in

4:15

performance from the Neo. All right. If

4:17

you plan to use the Air for some

4:19

creative work, it's definitely capable,

4:21

but not for everything. It really

4:22

depends on what you're doing. In

4:24

Photoshop, it performs very well. It

4:26

even beats out the Legion 7A, which is a

4:28

gaming laptop with a dedicated GPU. It

4:30

also smashes Intel's Panther Lake X

4:32

chip. Those are the ones with a more

4:34

powerful B390 integrated GPU. Now, in

4:37

this test, all that extra power fed to

4:38

the M5 chip when it's placed in the

4:40

MacBook Pro 14, it doesn't really result

4:42

in any extra performance. Moving over to

4:45

video editing, we ran the new Puget

4:47

benchmark. Here you can really see how

4:49

much better a laptop with an Nvidia GPU

4:51

performs. By the way, the reason we've

4:53

chosen this particular Legion to show is

4:55

that it's quite compact for a gaming

4:57

laptop. It's also premium like the airs

4:59

and we feel it's going to be priced

5:01

similar to the higher spec airs. Now

5:03

Premier Pro, it also demonstrates that

5:05

there is a benefit of moving up from the

5:06

M58 core GPU that comes in the base

5:09

13-in air to the M510 core GPU that's

5:12

available in the 13-in airs as an

5:13

upgrade and it also comes in all of the

5:15

15 in. Now, at least it's a benefit in

5:18

some apps. Compared to the prior M4

5:20

airs, you can really see a big jump in

5:23

performance here. our MacBook Air with

5:25

the M58 core GPU beat out our older Air

5:28

with the M410 core GPU. So clearly

5:31

Apple's new GPU cores are much improved.

5:33

Since Premier Pro saw such a big

5:35

improvement genon on genen, I actually

5:37

wanted to see could I edit one of our

5:39

videos on the airs. So I loaded up one

5:41

of our recent ones and tried playing

5:43

back 1 minute from the timeline. I

5:45

performed that exact same test on each

5:47

of our MacBooks. On the air, playback

5:49

was unfortunately very stuttery. I

5:51

measured over 400 frames dropped at full

5:53

resolution. However, when I dropped that

5:55

playback down to half resolution, it

5:58

actually dropped only 19 frames. That

6:00

being said, this was a simpler section

6:01

of our timeline. So, I personally I

6:03

wouldn't feel comfortable moving over to

6:05

an Air. Now, if you step up to a MacBook

6:07

Pro with the M5 chip, it actually

6:09

doesn't solve this. In fact, it

6:11

performed a tad worse, which goes to

6:12

show the fan doesn't always help. It

6:14

really depends what you're doing. For

6:16

our videos, you have to move up to a

6:18

MacBook Pro with an M5 Pro chip to be

6:20

comfortable. By the way, you may think

6:22

the reason our MacBook Pro and the Air

6:24

did badly here is because they only have

6:25

16 gig of memory, whereas the M5 Pro

6:28

MacBook Pro, it has 24 gig. We don't

6:31

think this is the case. You see, we've

6:32

had an identical MacBook Pro with M5 in

6:35

before with 24 gig. Although, we didn't

6:37

try this specific test back then. It's a

6:39

new test for us. We did try an export of

6:41

one of our videos, which is very

6:43

intensive, more so than what we're

6:44

showing you here. We saw no benefit

6:47

moving from 16 gig to 24. Now, obviously

6:50

that's a different test. If you think

6:51

that we need to go buy a 24 gig MacBook
