The most comfortable over-ear headphones for 2026 | Crutchfield

Let's talk about headphone comfort. It's

a subject so obvious that it's often

overlooked. If you're wearing something

on your head for long periods of time,

it needs to feel good. In this video,

I'll share with you the list of

Crutchfield's top five most comfortable

headphones of 2026 based on our own

in-house testing. I've auditioned nearly

a thousand headphones over the years for

Crutchfield. And of course, I value

great sound. But still, I must admit,

how headphones fit and feel play a

bigger role in how much I enjoy them.

But we hear from our customers every

day, and everyone has a different

opinion on comfort. So, back in 2019, we

invited a large group of Crutchfield

employees to try on more than 50 overear

headphones. We use perception tests

designed by our data scientists and

research engineers on staff to help

determine which headphones fit best for

different uses and situations. That

testing now informs how we present

details on fit and use cases today.

Attributes we call fit factors and it

helped me choose this list for the most

comfortable headphones. Number one on

our list and our most comfortable

overall, the Meza Audio 99 Classics V2.

This is the sequel to the headphones we

named most comfortable coming out of our

initial study. And the original 99

Classics held that title for over six

years. The V2s feature larger drivers

for better sound, so their wooden ear

cups are also a little larger, but Mezz

uses the same spring suspension system

as the originals. The headband stretches

over the head to ensure the pressure

remains even regardless of head size. It

hugs the crown of the head while the

buttersoft ear pads gently hold the

headphones into place. The V2s fit a

little more snugly for me than the first

gen 99 classics. Though I would still

categorize the overall fit as relaxed.

Since the ear cups and ear pads are

larger, that crucial ratio of weight

distribution had to change a bit. But

the fit was still pretty much a

oneandone where the headphones seem to

sink right into place when I put them

on. Just to be clear, these are not the

type of headphones you want to wear to

the gym or on a flight. These are wired

headphones designed for focus listening

and there's no active noise cancellation

built in. But that segus nicely into our

next two picks. The most comfortable

headphones for work, the Sony WH100XM6

and the most comfortable headphones for

flight and travel, the Bose Quiet

Comfort Ultra Headphones Gen 2. No

surprise here. These are two of our top

selling and best reviewed wireless

noiseancelling headphones. And both are

practically ubiquitous at both the

airport and the office. Whenever we put

the Sony XM series up against the Bose

QC series, they are neck andneck in

every category from noise cancellation

to sound quality to feature set. And of

course, they are practically in a dead

heat when it comes to comfort. So, this

is probably a good time to look at

Crutchfield's fit factor and how we

score headphone comfort. In our user

testing, participants rated each set of

headphones by assigning a separate score

for five different fit and comfort

elements or fit factors. After crunching

numbers, we found that security and

stability correlated the closest with

overall comfort grades. Other attributes

were a lot more subjective. A relaxed

design could score similarly to a snug

one, and the same was true with firm

versus soft ear pads. So, I've learned

that it's best to present the most

important attributes of a headphone

without editorializing. If I've tried a

set of overear headphones, I'll list

their prominent attributes or fit

factors on our site. In the case of the

Bose QC Ultra Gen 2, their relaxed fit

and lightweight design stick out the

most. For the Sony XM 6s, it's their

lightweight design, snug, secure fit,

and roomy ear cups. Coming in at number

four, our most comfortable wired audio

file headphones, the Sennheiser HD

660S2.

Sennheiser has always approached their

legendary 600 series wired headphones

with a sound first mentality. You could

tell by their precision tuned drivers

and their completely open back design.

That design allows sound and air to move

in and out freely. But the HD 660S

headphones also firmly nestle into place

thanks to soft velvety ear pads that

properly position the drivers on your

head. And even though the Meza spring

suspension design earned the highest

marks in our testing, Sennheiser's more

traditional yolkbased system had plenty

of fans. Rounding out our list at number

five, the most comfortable wireless

audio file headphones, the Foccal

Batiste MG. These are by far the most

expensive headphones on this list, and

there's a reason. These are wireless

noiseancelling headphones that deliver a

sonic performance on par with Foccal's

storied wired audio file headphones. To

accomplish this, Foccal uses the same

superized driver system complete with

magnesium based diaphragm domes. Those

drivers require more space to move and

move quickly. So, the Batist MG

headphones themselves are large and

heavy duty for sure, but the padding is

lush and the weight is distributed well,

so long listening sessions remain a

luxury. and you can enjoy those

delicious foccal dynamics anywhere you

go. So, those are our top five most

comfortable overear headphones for 2026.
