0:00

welcome back to shus poy I'm Joe hesm

0:02

and I presently plan to present a

0:03

passage proving the papacy to

0:05

Protestants now I'm not going to pretend

0:06

I was able to do that in one take but I

0:08

wanted to make sure I got that mouthful

0:10

out for a good reason a lot of

0:12

non-catholic Christians believe the

0:13

entire doctrine of the papacy boils down

0:15

to one passage and one part of a passage

0:18

that it's all about Matthew 16 and it's

0:20

all about what it means when Jesus says

0:22

you are Peter and Upon This Rock I will

0:25

build my church I want to be clear I

0:27

think that is an important passage in

0:28

proving the papacy but as I point out in

0:31

my book Pope Peter defending the

0:32

church's most distinctive Doctrine in a

0:34

time of Crisis there's a better way to

0:37

go to present the papacy if you're

0:39

trying to explain this idea that may be

0:41

very foreign to someone not coming from

0:43

a Catholic background using just

0:46

biblical text so let's start with why I

0:47

wouldn't use Matthew 16 and then get

0:50

into the passage I would use instead so

0:52

in Matthew 16 to give a little bit of

0:54

context Simon Peter declares Jesus the

0:57

Christ the son of the Living God and

1:00

Jesus responds blessed are you Simon bar

1:02

Jonah son of Jonah for flesh and blood

1:04

is not revealed this to you but my

1:05

Father in heaven and I tell you you are

1:08

Peter and on this rock I'll build my

1:09

church and then literally it says and

1:11

the gates of Hades shall not Prevail

1:13

against it I will give you singular here

1:16

the Keys of the Kingdom of Heaven and

1:18

whatever you bind on Earth shall be

1:20

bound in heaven and whatever you loose

1:22

on Earth shall be loosed in heaven and

1:24

so to hear many people tell it both

1:26

Catholics and non-catholics frankly you

1:28

would imagine that the the entire

1:30

doctrine of the papacy is only defended

1:33

on the basis of this short passage or

1:35

even more specifically just on that line

1:38

you are Peter and on this rock I'll

1:39

build my church here's an example of the

1:42

way I hear it presented that whether

1:44

this is what the speakers mean or not

1:46

gives the impression that it's all just

1:49

about this passage that the entire

1:50

doctrine of the papacy is hinging on

1:53

these few verses the doctrine of

1:56

apostolic succession is based on Matthew

1:59

16 13- 20 this is Peter's confession of

2:03

the identity of Jesus and Jesus's

2:06

response Upon This Rock I will build my

2:09

church and the Gates of Hell will not

2:11

Prevail against it it has often been

2:14

suggested that Peter is the foundation

2:16

of the church I'd have to say if it were

2:19

so it would be a very wobbly building

2:21

according to Roman teaching Peter is the

2:23

rock of Matthew 16 that Christ in

2:27

conferring a Primacy upon Peter intends

2:29

this to be understood to apply to

2:31

Peter's successors as well and that

2:34

hence Christ Is In this passage

2:37

instituting the office of Pope for the

2:40

Christian church so that's actually the

2:42

first thing I would point to and why I

2:44

wouldn't start with Matthew 16 because

2:46

many Protestants are under the

2:48

impression that the entire doctrine of

2:49

the papacy is only from Matthew 16 if

2:52

they've ever heard Catholics describe

2:54

the papacy they've probably heard of

2:56

this and so it's LED people like Dave

2:58

Hunt who is a fairly anti

3:00

Catholic and kind of unreliable author

3:02

to make the claim that today it is

3:05

claimed that Christ's statement to Peter

3:07

made him the first pope The Rock in

3:08

which the one true church was built and

3:10

that the Pope's Authority today and the

3:12

Catholic religion over which he presides

3:14

stands and falls upon that assertion now

3:18

I'll just say at the outside this isn't

3:20

true that whatever you think is meant by

3:23

The Rock in Matthew 16 you can believe

3:27

in the papacy or deny the papacy they

3:29

they Doctrine does not in fact

3:31

exclusively turn on what we mean by Upon

3:33

This Rock and so let's talk about that

3:35

who or what is the rock of Matthew 16

3:38

this is the second reason I wouldn't

3:40

start with this passage is that it's

3:41

kind of a complicated question it's

3:43

complicated in part on the Protestant

3:45

side because many Protestants are eager

3:47

to affirm basically any interpretation

3:51

other than the seemingly obvious one

3:52

that the rock is Peter so for instance

3:54

here's Mike Winger their case for their

3:56

Authority that single pillar that holds

3:58

up all the doctrine of the church we

4:00

declare it therefore it's true well that

4:01

pillar is based on two passages one is

4:04

Matthew 16 we looked at that last week

4:06

and showed that whatever it does teach

4:09

it certainly does not teach that Peter

4:11

was the first pope so I call that the

4:13

kind of anything but Peter ex aesus it's

4:15

like we know Catholics take this

4:17

interpretation so whatever it means it

4:19

just doesn't mean that and there's

4:22

actually a number of Protestants who

4:23

make arguments like that about 100 years

4:25

ago a very popular Protestant preacher

4:27

and Scholar at Robertson uh Southern

4:29

Baptist he argues that it's not

4:32

perfectly clear how Jesus means the

4:35

figure to be applied when he says Upon

4:36

This Rock I'll build my church we don't

4:38

really know what he means and he says he

4:39

could mean himself if he pointed to

4:42

himself that this rock could mean Jesus

4:44

if he pointed to himself and that really

4:45

crucial detail was just left off or

4:48

something second he says Jesus could

4:50

mean Peter himself by this rock as the

4:52

representative of the 12 and is

4:54

confessing his faith in Christ so he can

4:56

be the rock as long as it's on behalf of

4:59

all 12 or third he says Jesus could mean

5:02

the confession of trust made by Peter as

5:04

The Rock so the confession could be

5:06

Peter's confession it could be all 12 or

5:09

it could be Jesus the one obvious

5:11

reading that is excluded there of course

5:14

is that The Rock means Peter in some

5:16

unique and special sort of way that

5:18

there's a reason that Simon has his name

5:21

changed to Peter and not all 12 so I

5:24

would just say at the outset it's a

5:26

complicated question to start with

5:27

Matthew 16 because a lot of Protestants

5:29

don't know what they think the passage

5:31

does mean they just know what they think

5:32

the passage doesn't mean or maybe

5:34

they'll have a very particular idea

5:36

they're convinced it means Peter's

5:37

confession of Faith or they're convinced

5:39

the rock is Jesus doesn't matter that

5:42

those two views it's hard to see how

5:44

they go together we'll acknowledge that

5:46

because the other group of people who

5:49

have sometimes confusing interpretations

5:51

on this passage are the church fathers

5:53

themselves the early church fathers were

5:55

open to a wide range of meanings to this

5:58

passage this is is a strong point to

6:00

make if you think that the entire case

6:03

for the papacy is going to be made or

6:05

broken by getting the identity of the

6:08

Rock right you should know that the

6:10

early Christians took different

6:12

interpretations and didn't seem to think

6:14

it was super important which one was

6:16

right so I want to say at the outset

6:19

here there's sometimes a mythology

6:21

around this even among the well educated

6:24

that the one interpretation the early

6:25

Christians didn't really take especially

6:27

in the East was that it was about Peter

6:30

so here's Pastor Jordan Cooper making

6:32

this pretty common kind of historical

6:34

error the way that Rome interprets this

6:37

and this is by the way not the way the

6:38

early EST strch fathers interpret this

6:40

passage which I think is very

6:41

interesting and there's reasons why the

6:43

Eastern fathers particularly have never

6:45

held to this interpretation of of this

6:48

particular passage so that's a little

6:49

confusing but it seems what he's saying

6:51

is there's this Roman interpretation and

6:53

that's a common description of the

6:55

interpretation of Peter as The Rock is

6:57

the Roman view that there's this r

6:59

interpretation but this wasn't taken by

7:01

most of the church fathers or anyone in

7:03

the East and neither of those claims are

7:06

true uh so Ed or Edward suchinsky who is

7:09

actually an orthodox I believe former

7:11

Catholic he's married to a Catholic his

7:13

kids I know he's raising them Orthodox

7:14

he said that in interviews before so
