VOLLSTÄNDIGE ABSCHRIFT

0:00

so okay you do a hackathon 2 weeks later

0:01

you get into YC roughly a month later

0:03

you're flying a drone what we've seen in

0:05

Ukraine in the past 2 years that drones

0:07

and like being able to just throw a

0:09

thousand of something at somebody is

0:10

extremely useful but now we can't run an

0:13

autonomous Mission because we don't have

0:15

GPS what if we just use like Google Maps

0:17

and what if we fingerprint the maps and

0:19

and match them when you buy better

0:22

sensors what you're buying is less noise

0:25

AI is very good at D noising just take a

0:28

cheap sensor and just noise it and you

0:31

can do something for like a 100th of

0:36

price I'm Ian lafy I'm the CTO at

0:39

thesias and we're building GPS denied

0:42

drone navigation tools so basically

0:44

we've got a little triangle you put it

0:45

on the bottom of your drone and it lets

0:48

it fly without GPS well thank you so

0:51

much for joining me here this is going

0:52

to be fun you came here to the astronic

0:53

office we got our epic industrial

0:55

Machinery in the background very fitting

0:57

for this kind of conversation but the

0:59

the point of that of course is that GPS

1:01

is not guaranteed I mean it's on all of

1:03

our phones we're used to it you're used

1:05

to being able to navigate with it just

1:06

like as a person walking around the

1:08

world but I don't think people know

1:09

those are literally the same satellites

1:11

that the Department of Defense uses

1:13

there's not like another GPS

1:14

constellation out there there's just 31

1:16

satellites and with those satellites

1:18

both we navigate around cities and

1:20

drones navigate a battlefield that's

1:22

exactly it and um I mean GPS is really

1:25

really good um and it's it's really

1:27

cheap recently we've seen that

1:28

commercial drones are able to do like a

1:30

lot and so all of those commercial

1:32

drones were built on the backbone of

1:34

having GPS uh so you can get a $500

1:37

drone off Amazon um and that's really

1:40

really useful um but it relies on like

1:42

this $25 GPS chip uh and previously um

1:45

in the US and in the defense industry

1:47

we've built these large like Exquisite

1:50

systems that okay if you're spending 3

1:53

million on a on a plane you can have a

1:56

$500,000 like Boutique GPS replacement

1:59

and so we've actually had that

2:01

technology since the' 70s um really the

2:04

difference now is that okay if you can

2:07

go on Amazon or you can literally 3D

2:09

print something that has like this

2:11

incredible use and is really really

2:12

cheap

2:14

then like you need something that can

2:16

drop in on that and and serve that need

2:19

that was previously just like reserved

2:21

for these like custom belt systems

2:23

meaning meaning because drones have

2:24

gotten so cheap and so good and

2:26

basically like uh just cost effective

2:28

enough that you can have dozens hundreds

2:30

thousands of them deployed yep you need

2:32

all the components of that to also be

2:34

cheap like you can't just have cheap

2:35

electric motors and you can't just have

2:37

cheap whatever like batteries and things

2:39

like that like very compact batteries

2:40

like that that by itself is not enough

2:42

you also need to be able to navigate

2:43

these things and and that is too

2:45

expensive or just not good enough to

2:47

stay uh active in like a wartime

2:49

environment yeah and I mean what's

2:50

really incredible is like what we've

2:51

seen in Ukraine in the past two years is

2:53

like real like uh peer powered conflict

2:56

and so it's not just like America we've

2:59

we' got these big bases and we're set up

3:01

in Afghanistan and we can just like

3:03

project our power um this is like

3:05

literally trench warfare and so what you

3:09

see there is that the drones and like

3:11

being able to just throw a thousand of

3:13

something at somebody is extremely

3:14

useful and it's even useful without GPS

3:18

um but then people people come to this

3:20

problem and it's like oh my gosh like my

3:23

drone can do all of this awesome stuff

3:25

at home or like we would like it to do

3:28

all of this but now we can't do that

3:30

because like we can't run an autonomous

3:32

Mission because we don't have GPS like

3:34

we can't um if we're doing like Intel we

3:38

don't actually know where the Intel is

3:40

coming from and so people are going back

3:42

to like very old school techniques a lot

3:44

of the time where you know you're

3:46

literally looking at at some video feed

3:48

of tank in the battlefield that you

3:50

you'd like to know where the enemy's

3:52

tank is um but then you're like doing

3:55

terrain matching it's like oh I know

3:57

yourself like you're looking at a

3:58

picture and you're like oh I remember

3:59

that tree literal person is like looking

4:00

there and then going on a map on their

4:02

computer or like their tablet um and so

4:05

in a lot of ways it's like very new tech

4:06

and very old Tech because you've got

4:08

this tablet but then you literally have

4:09

to like look at a picture and say like

4:11

oh I'm here um and so so we're enabling

4:16

is like basically stuff that you could

4:19

do in California today with a drone

4:22

because GPS isn't denied and we're just

4:24

making it so that you can do that uh in

4:27

in a battlefield do you want to talk a

4:28

little bit about just the different kind

4:29

kinds of drone that are out there like

4:31

on battlefields today because it's not

4:32

just like you know I'm sure people are

4:33

familiar with a DJ DJI like you know fly

4:36

up and have a camera and whatever um

4:38

what what are the different ways that

4:40

they're deployed today and what do those

4:41

different requirements mean for

4:42

something like your product yeah it's a

4:44

really good question I think they like

4:45

coolest like flashiest kind of drone is

4:47

like the kamakazi like the oneway attack

4:49

drone and are those usually fpvs yeah

4:51

okay um and so you can make those really

4:54

cheap you can make them for like under

4:56

$500 um you can 3D print them then

4:59

there's also and this is what the DJI

5:00

get used for a lot like ISR drones so

5:02

like intelligence surveillance

5:03

reconnaissance um those are really

5:07

really useful actually like just

5:10

Gathering Intel um they can be very

5:13

useful in like telling you where your

5:15

artillery has hit um yeah th those get

5:18

like a ton of use and then I think what

5:21

what we're seeing more of now in in

5:24

Ukraine as well is like these kind of

5:26

one-way long strike attack drones that

5:28

can go hundreds of miles and those are

5:31

like effectively like a missile

5:33

basically and so so those are kind are

5:35

those like carrying payloads that they

5:36

drop and fire separately or they're not

5:39

kamic cazis they're not you see people

5:40

are literally filling up like basically

5:42

cesas filled with like explosives and

5:45

like sending those like very long

5:46

distance um and I I I think that that's

5:49

like a capability that we need to we

5:52

need to further develop um it's it's

5:54

kind of just like when you can do that

5:57

so much cheaper um and have so much like

6:00

Intelligence on board so for for those

6:02

different types of drones I imagine that

6:04

they are built differently they're built

6:05

different sizes they're more or less

6:06

expensive they're more or less capable

6:08

of doing certain missions of course so

6:10

which types of those are you guys

6:12

focusing on most for for the nav yeah

6:14

it's a good question um I I think what

6:16

we like what we focused on initially are

6:19

like ISR drones um because you typically

6:22

spend a little more money on on these

6:24

like surveillance platforms um and so

6:28

you know our stuff is cheap it's like

6:30

under $10,000 uh well under $10,000 and

6:34

um because of that like I if you're if

6:38

you have like a $500 drone like that

6:41

that might be like a little tougher to

6:42

make work um and so just starting on

6:45

like platforms that do repeatable

6:47

missions um and so like it's more cost

6:51

effective basically makes sense you you

6:53

want to start on the higher end

6:54

basically and then work your way to get

6:55

the product cheaper and cheaper as you

6:57

have more scale yeah and the like the

6:58

autonomy is is really flashy and really

7:01

cool um like the full end to-end

7:03

autonomy and like the idea of like oh

7:05

you put something up and then you know

7:06

it just strikes a Target no human in the

7:08

loop um that being said like you know
