VOLLSTÄNDIGE ABSCHRIFT

0:00

(relaxed music)

0:02

- 'Kay, so Sony is back

0:04

with their new flagship wireless noise-canceling headphones

0:07

with the super easy to remember name.

0:08

You know the ones.

0:10

These are the Sony WH-1000XM6s.

0:15

Easier way to think of it,

0:16

most people just call these the XM6 or the Mark 6s,

0:19

which is exciting

0:20

because the Mark 5s from last year

0:22

actually left some room for improvement.

0:23

They improved some things,

0:25

but they also made some things worse,

0:27

which was weird because the Sony noise-canceling headphones

0:29

were pretty much king of the hill for so long,

0:31

they didn't have a ton of reason to change a whole lot.

0:34

Thankfully though, the newest generation

0:37

updates a lot of the stuff

0:38

that the Mark 5s fell short on,

0:39

so that's really good to see.

0:40

It's exciting that there is a new design,

0:42

new sound, a new case,

0:45

but also a new price.

0:47

We'll get there.

0:48

So, straight from the top,

0:49

I still love this super clean, simple design.

0:52

They kept what was good about the Mark 5s.

0:54

They are very, very lightweight.

0:56

The vegan leather earpads are super soft.

0:59

The headband is incredibly flexible.

1:01

These are just some of the most comfortable headphones

1:03

to wear for a long period of time,

1:04

which is what you want from these.

1:06

If you wear them for a long time for traveling

1:08

or for a commute or something like that,

1:09

they are still awesome.

1:11

But if you remember the last generation,

1:13

maybe you're a subscriber

1:14

and you've watched all these videos,

1:16

wink, wink,

1:17

then you remember that they made this huge downgrade

1:19

to travel specifically

1:21

because they didn't fold at all, ever,

1:24

so they had this huge case

1:26

that was more annoying to travel with.

1:27

So, first thing I was happy to see is the Mark 6s are back

1:30

to being able to fold up again,

1:32

so they have a new,

1:33

significantly smaller case designed around them

1:36

that fits some cables as well,

1:38

and bonus, the case doesn't zipper anymore.

1:42

It just closes with magnets at this buckle on the side

1:45

and it is way faster to open and close

1:48

than everyone else's zipper cases.

1:50

I'm actually not sure how we haven't seen this more often

1:52

because this case is pretty much perfect.

1:55

I have a feeling it's about to be copied a whole lot

1:58

in a whole bunch of places,

1:59

'cause wouldn't change a thing.

2:01

Also, another thing that Mark 5s weirdly didn't do

2:03

was when you're wearing 'em around your neck

2:04

was just to be able to rotate them flat like this.

2:08

For some reason, they took that away in the Mark 5s,

2:11

and now they're back.

2:13

Simple thing, but thank you.

2:15

So, overall design-wise, I feel like these are back

2:17

to being up near the top

2:19

of the best travel-ready noise canceling headphones.

2:22

It also comes with a four-foot right-angle headphone cable,

2:25

and one of those tiny USB-C to USB-A cables for charging

2:29

and they just fit in this little pocket over here

2:31

in the corner of the case like this.

2:32

It's great. Feels durable. No notes.

2:35

And then they changed the buttons and microphones

2:37

around the outside of the headphones just slightly,

2:38

so the right side is still just the USB Type-C port,

2:41

and then on the left next to the audio jack,

2:43

they've made the power button much bigger,

2:45

which doesn't seem like much of a big deal,

2:46

but that now lets you distinguish better

2:48

between the power button

2:50

and the noise cancellation button

2:51

while you're not able to see them.

2:53

Now, speaking of noise cancellation,

2:54

they made a bunch of behind-the-scenes changes

2:56

to these headphones

2:57

that sound like they could make a big improvement.

3:01

So, there are 12 microphones on these

3:03

instead of eight from the last generation,

3:05

there's also a significantly more powerful

3:07

Sony QN3 chip inside

3:09

that should be able to do much more processing,

3:12

and they also said that they've trained these headphones

3:14

on 500 million voice samples using AI

3:19

to be able to better distinguish human voices

3:22

from environmental noise.

3:24

So, this is the last generation of headphones

3:25

and how the built in microphone sounds

3:27

to someone I'm on a call with.

3:29

Eight microphones.

3:31

You know, some noise from air conditioners

3:33

and general room tones, but nothing too crazy.

3:36

And so now here is the Mark 6.

3:39

So, they added two more beamforming microphones to the front

3:42

for hearing my voice better,

3:44

but what I really think

3:45

most of these microphones are better for

3:47

is noise cancellation and transparency.

3:49

So, how do they sound?

3:51

Well, I've been listening to these headphones

3:52

for the past two weeks or so.

3:54

I've taken a few flights,

3:56

I've worn 'em around the studio, at home,

3:58

all kinds of different environments,

4:00

and they sound better.

4:02

These are actually all-new drivers versus the last gen,

4:04

so there's a lot going on here,

4:05

but to be specific, they are excellent quality sound

4:09

with great range.

4:10

Punchy lows and a lot of bass

4:12

and then a lot of detail and clarity

4:14

all the way through the mids and the highs

4:16

and they are still really, really insanely good

4:19

at canceling out white noise.

4:21

Now, if we wanna get even more granular,

4:23

I did a bunch of back-to-back listening

4:25

with these Mark 6s and the last generation,

4:28

and there are certain tracks

4:29

where you really feel the difference a lot.

4:32

Basically, the Mark 6s have a much stronger low end,

4:35

especially in the sub-bass and lowest bass,

4:38

and the Mark 5s started to feel

4:41

a little spiky in the midrange where the vocals are

4:44

and were a little bit weaker in the low end,

4:45

so in the tracks

4:47

that have a really important bass or sub-bass,

4:50

pop, electro, hip hop, stuff like that,

4:53

that's when in these, they're really appreciated.

4:56

And then the Mark 6 also has

4:57

even stronger noise cancellation

4:59

than the already GOATed Mark 5s,

5:01

but the real highlight for me

5:03

is actually the transparency mode,

5:05

which feels way more natural and clear sounding.

5:09

So, if you're wearing these headphones

5:11

and do want voices to come through

5:13

or just wanna hear your environment more

5:14

for whatever reason,

5:16

people might talk to you through these headphones,

5:18

the transparency mode,

5:19

or what Sony calls ambient sound mode,

5:22

went from feeling a little muddy and unclear

5:24

to literally up there with AirPods Max levels

5:27

of crystal clear and natural, which is awesome.

5:30

Now, not only are these headphones new,

5:32

but Sony's also refreshed their app.

5:34

The Sony Headphones Connect app

5:36

is now just called Sound Connect,

5:38

but it still does most of the same stuff.

5:39

There's still literally 20 different levels

5:42

of ambient sound.

5:43

There's still custom EQs that you can easily flip between,

5:46

and this is also where you can turn on or off

5:49

any of the other convenience features.

5:51

Now, this one new one that I found interesting

5:53

is listening mode.

5:54

So, you can listen to your audio like normal

5:56

in standard mode,

5:57

or you can flip it to background music mode,

6:01

which does an incredibly good job

6:02

of making it sound like the music

6:04

is coming from a small set of tinny speakers,

6:08

like, 20 feet away,

6:10

like, as if you're in a cafe somewhere,

6:13

which, you know, you might be into that.

6:15

There's even actually three modes.

6:17

So, cafe, living room, or my room,

6:21

each of which just shrinks the size

6:22

of the virtual room a bit,

6:24

and then there's also cinema mode,

6:26

which does this upmixing from stereo

6:29

to a 360-degree immersive sound mix

6:31

of whatever you're listening to,

6:33

kinda like a movie theater.

6:34

It's also a very dramatic V-shaped sound too.

6:37

I could picture someone maybe in their home office

6:40

or a cubicle or something like that

6:41

listening to these all day

6:43

and wanting to feel like it's a less fatiguing,

6:47

further away sound,

6:49

and then you'd put cafe mode on and it works.

6:53

It's surprising how well it works.

6:55

And maybe then you flip to cinema mode

6:56

for watching certain YouTube videos or something like that.

6:58

There's also still the EQ stuff.

7:00

The point is you can make these headphones sound

7:04

exactly the way you want them to.

7:05

The sound is really strong.

7:07

The noise cancellation is excellent.

7:09

They're extremely comfortable to wear
