0:01

I have never seen another person freak

0:04

out so much over something so small.

0:08

>> I wasn't eating. I was losing weight. Um

0:10

I was also was even using the mobile

0:12

phone. Um it just was making me really

0:14

really sick.

0:15

>> Few days later I took very very sick.

0:17

>> I had aching joints. I was shivery. I

0:19

was cold. I was weak.

0:20

>> I contacted the doctor um sent

0:23

photographs.

0:23

>> They took it quite serious

0:24

>> and he's like it's probably just a viral

0:26

infection. But I pushed him and says,

0:28

"Look, this can happen." So he went to

0:30

Google.

0:31

>> I was put on a prolonged

0:33

um antibiotic.

0:35

>> Hello, Steven.

0:36

>> Probably about 3 or 4 months to actually

0:39

feel strong enough to be able to

0:41

>> felt unwell, fatigued, and not great

0:44

energy-wise. Probably for several months

0:47

after

0:48

>> I wanted to be in your YouTube video.

0:51

>> I'm your number one song.

0:52

>> He is

0:54

>> not her. as the time my running buddy,

0:57

should I mention his name? N we'll leave

1:00

him out of it. Persian um found one of

1:04

these unwelcome visitors

1:06

lodged on attached to

1:09

>> Shane got his tick.

1:13

I'll tell you where Shane got his tick,

1:15

but put it this way. You don't want a

1:16

tick there. A very personal part of his

1:19

body. Let's leave it at that. And he was

1:21

in a total panic. He ran off to the f

1:23

first aid station to get a pair of

1:25

tweezers to get this thing removed. And

1:27

that was about six years ago. And that

1:29

was my very first introduction to the

1:32

horror and disgust that these things can

1:36

create. Since then, I've personally been

1:38

bitten by dozens of them and I've killed

1:42

hundreds of them as well. But I'm now

1:44

starting to realize that maybe I haven't

1:47

quite been taking them as seriously as I

1:50

should have. You can probably figure out

1:51

where this is going. I am, of course,

1:53

talking about ticks. Those tiny little

1:56

blood sucking insect. No, they're not

1:58

insects. They're not insects. They're

2:00

actually an arachnid. So, they're kind

2:02

of a type of spider in a way. They've

2:04

got eight legs, but their numbers are

2:07

increasing in Ireland and in the UK year

2:10

on year. And with that increase in their

2:13

numbers comes an increase in the

2:16

disease, the infection, the bacterial

2:18

infection that they can spread or

2:21

transmit known as Lyme disease.

2:25

This is a condition that most people

2:27

recover fully from with treatment. But a

2:30

percentage of people end up suffering

2:32

from chronic conditions over maybe

2:34

months or in some cases years or in a

2:37

small percentage of very unfortunate

2:38

cases, some people end up dealing with

2:42

the symptoms and the after effects of of

2:44

of uh Lyme disease for the rest of their

2:47

life. So in this video, I'm going to

2:48

talk through some tips how to avoid

2:50

ticks and what to do if you get bitten.

2:52

But I think crucially, I'm also going to

2:54

talk about why this is something you

2:56

should be aware of and you should take

2:57

precautions about. You've got a bigger

2:59

risk for making a questionable choice

3:01

for lunch. And I'll explain that later.

3:03

But first of all, let's discuss what

3:05

actually are ticks. Because ticks,

3:07

they're kind of weird and in a really

3:11

kind of twisted way, a little bit

3:13

adorable.

3:16

I could have picked a better day to make

3:18

this video. This is a topic for spring

3:21

and winter has decided to return.

3:25

Okay, story time. Let's find somewhere

3:27

to sit down.

3:32

Well, that was embarrassing. I thought

3:33

that would just

3:38

There we go. Right, I want to introduce

3:40

you to somebody. Say hello to my little

3:43

friend. This Oh, actually, that's a

3:46

little bit scary for the kids watching.

3:47

Hang on.

3:49

This

3:51

This is Rick the tick. Scientific name

3:56

Isoti's

3:58

Rickus. I think Rick the tick is easier

4:01

to pronounce. Although

4:04

Rick the tick here is actually female

4:07

which makes this somewhat confusing.

4:08

Rick might be a she, but she ain't no

4:11

lady. Rick is born around this time of

4:14

year, around spring, and begins life as

4:17

a teeny tiny little larvae, which is

4:20

about the size of a poppy seed. And the

4:23

very first thing that every baby tick

4:25

needs to do in life is go on an

4:28

adventure, a quest, a quest for blood.

4:33

Hello, give me your blood. It could be

4:36

from a sheep, a goat, a deer, a cow, a

4:40

lizard, a mouse, a squirrel, a bat, or

4:43

even a trail runner called Steven. But

4:47

unfortunately for poor little laral Rick

4:50

the tick. Can she fly? No. No. Can she

4:54

jump? No. No. So, what's she gonna do?

4:57

I'm not quite sure how this turned into

4:59

a bedtime story, but I'm gonna roll with

5:01

it. Rick the Laral tick is clever. Rick

5:04

the laral tick is smart and Rick the

5:07

laral tick has a plan. She demands a

5:11

shrubbery.

5:12

>> A shrubbery

5:15

or grass or a tree. Any kind of plant

5:19

will do. She crawls right out to the end

5:22

of that branch,

5:24

grips on with her rear six legs and

5:28

sticks her two front legs out with a

5:30

like a pair of arms and waves them in

5:32

the air.

5:34

It's actually kind of adorable in a

5:37

really sick and twisted way. And this

5:39

behavior,

5:41

this behavior is literally known as

5:45

questing. And that leaf, that twig, just

5:48

happens to be sticking out on a trail. A

5:50

trail along which a trail runner, a

5:52

hless trail runner named Steven is

5:55

running. And as he passes by, Rick

5:58

reaches out with her little arms and a

6:00

little bit like if you ever seen the

6:01

Dune movies, the way the Fman jump onto

6:04

the giant sandworms and kind of hook on.

6:07

She just grabs onto Steven's ankle as it

6:11

brushes past and

6:13

is dragged along for the ride. But

6:16

Steven's magnificent shins and calves

6:18

are not what she's looking for. or

6:21

they're too tough uh from years of ow

6:24

barbwire in front of me and a gor bush

6:27

behind me.

6:29

So she climbs further north and finds a

6:32

nice soft bit of skin maybe in behind

6:34

the knee, up in the thigh or in the

6:37

groin. And once she gets there, she

6:40

deploys her most deplorable action

6:43

because she has a pair of jaws a little

6:46

bit like this. these little jaws here.

6:48

And these are basically like two saws.

6:51

She takes those saws and starts

6:55

macheteing her way down through the

6:56

flesh. Now, you might think, well,

6:58

Steven's going to feel that, but no,

6:59

he's not because this diabolical little

7:02

creature injects a fluid from her saliva

7:07

which contains antiqu coagulants so the

7:10

blood doesn't clot, but also

7:11

painkillers. So, if you get bitten by a

7:14

tick, most people never feel it. Once

7:18

she's macheted her way through the flesh

7:19

comes the gross part. If you didn't

7:21

think that was gross enough, see this?

7:23

This thing here? That is like a little

7:26

straw, but it's a barbed straw. And she

7:29

jams that barbed straw right into the

7:32

hole she's just cut on Steven's leg. And

7:35

over several days, she becomes engorged

7:38

with blood and swells up,

7:41

which is a phrase I never thought I'd be

7:43

saying in a YouTube video. And

7:44

eventually, after Rick the tick's

7:47

abdomen has swollen to about 100 times

7:50

its original size, she drops off and

7:55

starts to grow, mol, sheds a layer of

7:57

skin, and then emerges, no longer a

7:59

larvae, but now a nymph, which is

8:01

slightly bigger. And then the cycle

8:03

repeats again. She goes off. She finds

8:05

another host. She latches on. She drinks

8:08

the blood. She engorges and swells up.

8:10

Drops off. And this time when she sheds

8:14

her outer layer, she emerges as an adult

8:16

tick. And there is just one final

8:20

feeding left. But this time it's

8:22

different because she doesn't just have

8:24

blood on her mind, she's also got love

8:28

because now it's time for Rick the tick
