Sam, I have a list of what I'm calling

0:03

dumb ideas that made a million dollars.

0:05

These are obscure lists that really only

0:07

people like you and me would ever even

0:08

keep. But I have a list of dumb ideas

0:11

that actually worked.

0:18

I say dumb not because I think they're

0:20

dumb. I actually think they're genius

0:21

cuz I think being clever and doing

0:23

simple things is actually a form of

0:24

genius. But I think other people would

0:26

call these dumb ideas. So, I want to run

0:28

through them with you and I want you to

0:29

give me your reaction to each one.

0:30

>> All right, let's hear it.

0:31

>> All right, first one came up. I was

0:33

watching uh the NFL playoffs, which were

0:36

on this weekend. I don't know if you've

0:38

paid any attention, but like the Chicago

0:40

Bears, who have sucked for a long time,

0:43

are in the playoffs, and Chicago has

0:45

this rival, the Green Bay Packers, and

0:47

the Packers have been great for a long

0:49

time, and the Bears have sucked for a

0:51

very long time. And so it's like kind of

0:53

a rivalry just by like location, but

0:55

they're not really they're not really

0:57

like close rivals. And so I'm watching

0:59

the game and I look and in the crowd I

1:02

just see a ton of people wearing like I

1:05

don't know how much you know about

1:06

football, but do you know what the

1:07

Packers fans wear on their head?

1:08

>> Yeah, cheese heads.

1:10

>> Cheese heads. So what do the Bears fans

1:12

wear?

1:13

>> I don't know. Helmets. I I don't know.

1:15

>> Cheese grers. And so I see all these

1:18

fans wearing this like silver cheese

1:21

grater hat and I'm like, "Oh, that's

1:23

clever." Like we're about to shred the

1:24

the the Green Bay Packers. We're going

1:26

to shred the the cheese heads. Um, and

1:28

I'm like, "This is really smart." So I

1:29

started looking at what's the story

1:31

behind this. And the story behind this

1:34

is kind of crazy. So if you go to

1:35

foamparty hats.com, this business

1:38

started in 2017. So, Grace Rojos and her

1:41

son Manuel Rojos, they they create this

1:42

thing and they had actually for like,

1:44

you know, 15 years, they had just for

1:46

fun been making like fun party hats,

1:48

like I think for their own daughter's

1:50

like party, they made fun party hats for

1:53

all the guests. People loved it and they

1:55

kind of gave it up and then they moved

1:56

and then they like started again and

1:58

they're like, "We're going to make these

1:59

foam hats for special events, parties,

2:01

occasions, and sports." And so, they've

2:04

been kind of like trucking along. They

2:06

got on Shark Tank and they got a they

2:07

gave up 25% of their company for 100

2:09

grand, right? So like you know this deal

2:11

with Mark Human.

2:12

>> Yeah. And you know birthdays, weddings,

2:16

corporate events, uh they had all these

2:18

like novelty hats and then came the

2:20

boom. So this uh greater head thing has

2:24

just taken off and become this like

2:25

viral frenzy. So like basically the

2:28

Bears, they have this coach. I don't

2:29

know if you've seen this guy Ben

2:30

Johnson. He's kind of got like if Sam

2:33

Par was into football energy a little

2:34

bit. He's just basically this young

2:37

coach who's supposed to be really really

2:38

smart. He's super like ripped. So every

2:40

time in the postgame, he'll like in the

2:42

locker room he just like rips off his

2:44

shirt, which like most of the old like

2:45

70-year-old coaches would never do. And

2:47

he gets his team like really fired up,

2:49

but he gives the game ball to this guy

2:52

>> who comes out and I don't know if you

2:54

can see this, but he's he's this wide

2:55

receiver DJ Moore. He's wearing the hat.

2:57

Um, and so he's he's wearing this, this

3:01

guy DJ Moore, and he starts d the whole

3:03

team starts chanting, "Go DJ, go DJ."

3:05

There's a little Wayne song. He starts

3:07

dancing. This clip goes viral, right?

3:09

This has 2.2 million views. And suddenly

3:12

these hats are flying off the shelves.

3:14

And they they do like 10,000 orders in a

3:17

week, which is like half a million

3:19

dollars in a week. They have this huge

3:20

weight list now, huge backlog because

3:22

they make these by hand apparently. And

3:25

this idea of like teamsp specific

3:29

novelty merch cuz like if like sports

3:32

fans like when I went to that Warriors

3:33

game I walked out I bought my son a

3:35

jersey a little ball but it's like all

3:37

so like vanilla. It's all cookie cutter.

3:39

It's like the same things over and over

3:40

again. But with social media the teams

3:44

now have little like trends, little meme

3:47

moments. And if you could fastf follow

3:49

those meme moments and create stuff

3:52

that's going to like kind of make

3:53

somebody laugh or be worth sharing on

3:55

social media, you can actually get a lot

3:57

of spread. And so that's what this

3:58

company's been doing with these hats and

4:01

going viral. So they've built a

4:02

basically a, you know, million-dollar

4:04

plus business now off of these like

4:06

novelty foam hats. Isn't that wild? They

4:10

do a really good job of making me into

4:12

the story. Uh, like it looks like it's a

4:15

like a Hispanic like family and looks

4:17

like the son is kind of the CEO and the

4:19

mom is like one who is the brains and

4:21

kind of came up with the idea and

4:22

originally made it.

4:23

>> It looks pretty awesome.

4:25

>> Yeah. But I think if somebody takes this

4:26

idea, there was another company like a

4:28

t-shirt company. I can't remember the

4:30

name, but they were doing this for

4:31

sports teams where they they realized

4:33

like the drop shipping infrastructure

4:36

has become so good that if anything

4:39

happens in the game like last night,

4:42

within an hour after the game, they can

4:44

have the store up for that product, for

4:46

that slogan, for that thing. Linsanity

4:48

happens in New York. And then they go

4:49

they have like the Linsanity like line

4:52

ready to go. And so I forgot what the

4:54

name of this company is, but they're

4:55

basically like rapidly like much faster,

4:59

like orders of magnitude faster than the

5:00

the typical like merch industry creating

5:03

teamsp specific moment specific uh

5:06

merch. And I just think that's like a

5:08

it's not the it's not the best business,

5:09

not a business I would want to be in,

5:11

but it is like a simple man's business.

5:13

Like anybody can understand what they're

5:15

doing and be able to like try to

5:16

replicate that. And then if you niche

5:18

down even all the way, forget t-shirts,

5:19

like to giant oversized foam hats. It's

5:22

like, there's a million-dollar business

5:24

sitting in in oversized foam hats, which

5:25

is pretty wild. All right, ready for the

5:27

next one? [laughter]

5:29

>> Yeah, that that was a quotable last

5:31

line. There's a million-dollar business

5:32

sitting in oversized foam hats.

5:35

>> All right, so a lot of people watch and

5:37

listen to this show because they want to

5:38

hear us just tell them exactly what to

5:40

do when it comes to starting or growing

5:42

a business. And really, a lot of people

5:44

who are listening, they have a full-time

5:45

job and they want to start something on

5:47

the side, a side hustle. Now, a lot of

5:48

people message Sean and I and they say,

5:50

"All right, I want to start something on

5:51

the side. Is this a good idea? Is that a

5:54

good idea?" And again, what they're

5:55

really just saying is, "Just give me the

5:57

ideas." Well, my friends, you're in

6:00

luck. So, my old company, The Hustle,

6:02

they put together a hundred different

6:04

side hustle ideas. And they have

6:06

appropriately called it the side hustle

6:08

idea database. It's a list of hundred

6:11

pretty good ideas. Frankly, I went

6:12

through them. They're awesome. And it

6:14

gives you how to start them, how to grow

6:16

them, things like that. that gives you a

6:17

little bit of inspiration. So, check it

6:18

out. It's called the side hustle idea

6:21

database. It's in the description below.

6:23

You'll see the link. Click it. Check it

6:24

out. Let me know in the comments what

6:25

you think. All right, here's the next

6:28

one. So, as you know, a long time ago, I

6:30

was running a business called

6:32

birthdayalarm.com. This was a business

6:34

started by Michael and Zoe Burch. It had

6:36

been going for 20 plus years, printing,

6:39

you know, millions of dollars a year. It

6:42

was one of the earliest viral businesses

6:44

ever. So I think Birthday Alarm has had
