Massive Scandal ROCKS Democrats — Hakeem Jeffries Blindsided
FULL TRANSCRIPT
Welcome back to Explain America. This is
your host Kyle Becker.
How do you lose tens of billions of
dollars on paper?
Not in the stock market, not in a bad
investment, just gone.
Explain the ways an accounting error.
Well, that's exactly what's raising
eyebrows right now in Washington D.C.
One set of financial disclosures
suggesting a sitting member of Congress
had access to millions of dollars and
then months later a revised filing
paints a completely different picture.
One that shrinks that number down to
tens of thousands of dollars, something
most Americans would recognize. So, what
happened? And maybe more importantly,
how does something like this even happen
in the first place?

Now, of course, you already recognize
this story. We're talking about Ilhan
Omar, the Minnesota congresswoman who
has been implicated in the Somali fraud
scandal, among other controversies, and
she has ruffled some feathers with her
financial disclosures because they were
recently amended in a way that
dramatically changes her reported net
worth. While earlier filings suggested
that Omar's household assets were
largely tied to her husband's business
interests, and of course, these ranged
from roughly $6 million
to as high as $30 million. Now, that's a
but it still places someone firmly in
millionaire territory. Now, according to
updated documents, that number has been
revised down drastically
somewhere between about $18,000 and
$95,000.
And that's not a small correction.
That's a complete reversal. And Omar's
team, uh they say the discrepancy comes
down to an accounting issue,
specifically a failure to properly
account for liabilities tied to those
business assets. So, in simple terms,
assets were listed, but debts weren't
fully factored in, making the overall
net worth appear much higher than
actually was. So, her representative
says she relied on professionals to
provide accurate figures, and this kind
of reliance is common among members of
Congress. Well, that's disturbing.
And still, the timeline is what's
drawing attention.
And the original filings stood for
months without any correction, and
public statements were made defending
them. And then the correction, it only
came after scrutiny and outside pressure
raised questions about the numbers.
And that sequence has led critics to
question not just the error itself, but
how it was handled.
And adding to
another layer of all of this, House
Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries has
weighed in on this, and his dismissal of
it should seem like a familiar refrain.
Hi, Leader Jeffries. Good to see you.
Just curious to hear your thoughts on
Ilhan Omar's financial disclosure. Does
all of the scrutiny around that concern
you at all, and does that warrant a
you know, an official House Ethics
investigation? Uh that issue has not
been brought to my attention, but we do
know that Ilhan Omar, who works hard on
behalf of the people that she represents
in Minnesota, is constantly under attack
by right-wing conspiracy theorists.
Well, what about the her like net worth
going from 30 million to now under
100,000? Do you believe that's truly an
accounting error as she alluded to? Uh
that's not an issue that I'm familiar
with.
What about her winery that she is now
dissolving from her financial
disclosure?
>> working to stop this reckless war of
choice in the Middle East, get the
economy back on track, you know, win
this gerrymandering war that Donald
Trump started that we're going to
finish. It's not an issue that I've been
locked in on today. Hakeem Jeffries,
he's dismissed all of this by calling it
a quote right-wing conspiracy unquote.
Well, that's very lazy. We've heard this
a million times, and it turns out the
conspiracy was actually true. And the
Democrats, they are up to shenanigans,
and this is a line they trot out
whenever they get busted. Uh it's very
sad. It's just kind of like a little kid
who just keeps, you know, it wasn't me,
it was my sister. It's it's basically
the same thing with this right-wing
conspiracy language.
And this response highlights the larger
dynamic at play because it isn't about
spreadsheets on Quicken or disclosure
forms. It's about credibility. And
financial disclosures exist for a
reason, to give the public a clear view
of potential conflicts of interest and
to ensure transparency from elected
officials like Ilhan Omar. God save us
all because she has been grilled about
her activities in Minnesota for a long
time, including her relationship with
several members of the business
community in the Somali-dominated
district where she hails, and a lot of
it looks very sleazy.
Congresswoman Omar, the last time I
spoke to you, you said that I was stupid
for asking you about your financial
disclosure, but there's some
discrepancies on there. Would you like
to explain that? How did you make such
big mistakes on there?
>> Absolutely, you're stupid for asking me
anything. I am? Yes. Well, what about
the American people who are wondering
how you made such a big mistake?
>> to the American people. What's the
explanation?
>> I have given them the explanation. Do
you want to tell our viewers cuz they're
I don't want to tell you jack Oh,
how about that? Okay. Have a good day.
Thank you, Congresswoman.
And of course, the Feeding Our Future
scandal that broke in Minnesota has
implicated some actors who have
contributed to Omar's campaign.
This is unsurprising.
It all functions like a giant racket.
And now that they're busted, they can
only really name-call and accuse their
opponents of engaging in conspiracy
theories. So, this is very desperate and
weak, and this is not acceptable from
our members of Congress, but of course,
that's up for voters to decide in the
midterm elections. And it seems like
Hakeem Jeffries, he is all aboard
covering up the
eyebrow-raising discrepancies
in the finances of members of Congress,
and that's what they do. They roll
together as if they were mafioso in some
kind of movie. They're just
they got each other's backs.
And that's going to be a big problem if
it turns out that Omar's finances had
something worse than accounting errors.
So, we'll have to stay tuned for that,
but weigh in with your thoughts about
this story. What do you think about
Ilhan Omar and Hakeem Jeffries?
We always appreciate hearing from you at
