DRAMATIC ESCAPE: Running for their Lives ! Tourists hit with Volcanic Explosion at Santiaguito

And the Darvin award today goes to

Guatemala to hikers again. There was an

explosion at the Santiago volcanoes that

made hikers run for their lives. Darvin

award. I have to say it. We've seen this

before. Now we see it again. They were

surprised, well they shouldn't have

been, by the explosive volcanic eruption

at the San Thiago Cathedral. Hikers then

had to run for their lives as you see in

the video. So absolutely crazy video at

this dome volcano in Guatemala. Group of

hikers illegally trespassing on this

active volcano. They were not supposed

to be there. This was not a group led by

a professional agency or anything. They

were caught up in this explosive

eruption while they were already

descending from the crater. And then you

can see they ran in panic for their

lives as like these volcanic you have to

say like explosive bombs rained down on

them. You cannot outrun that. So several

hikers falling heavily on that steep

slope of that crater. And if you know

how these slopes of the volcanoes are

are made and and and the geology of

that, right, it's it's a very high risk

of injury if you have to run down very

very fast. And the Santiaguito is like a

dome complex at the base of the larger

Santa Marita volcano. The youngest dome

that they have there is called El

Caliente, the hot one, for a reason,

guys. dear hikers. And it's it's the

only active one there right now. And it

has effusive activity, yes. But it's

also known for it its explosions that

can happen. And they usually occur every

few hours. So going there,

how stupid can you be, right? Sometimes

several times an hour. debris flow,

occasionally pyrolastic flows, laaris

erupting from the dome threatening

surrounding communities. So going there

is lifethreatening,

completely insane. It's strictly

forbidden to even go there, to climb up

there. And it was not one or two guys

that went there. It was several people.

And you can observe these eruptions from

a safe distance if you go to the summit

of the of the volcano of the Santa Maria

volcano there. There are lower

viewpoints also on the flanks of that

volcano. So there's absolutely no reason

why you would have to climb up there.

And even if you go not on this dome, if

you go on the dome that's next to it,

Caliente,

um it's safer comparatively. Still not

safe enough, but but safer. Also there,

if you take that trail, you have to go

through the valley between the Santa

Maria volcano and the dome complex where

also you can be hit by pyrolastic flows,

especially powerful explosions and and

everything. The lava bombs can be thrown

down into that valley. So, you do not

want to be down there. So when this

happened, when these hikers were

surprised,

April 20th, um between two and four

explosions per hour were actually

happening there. So, it was classified

as weak to moderate intensity, but

we have to make clear that's enough to

put these Darvin award winners in a

lifethreatening suicidal situation.

this this shows how not to do it, guys.

Absolutely crazy. This was my update,

but you should really have a look at

what's going on in Japan after that

large earthquake hit the same zone like

the 2011 Tohoku earthquake. The warning,
