FULLSTÄNDIGT TRANSKRIPT

0:00

For the second time in a week, the prime

0:02

minister faces questions over Peter

0:06

Mandolson uh from Kem Benog. Now want to

0:09

know what you thought of it, but also

0:11

what our chief political correspondent

0:13

Katherine Foster made of that exchange.

0:16

The last prime minister's question time

0:18

for a few weeks. Katherine Foster.

0:23

>> Yes. Well, good afternoon from a very

0:25

sunny college green, but the mood in

0:28

Parliament, anything but sunny. Some

0:30

very glum faces, I thought, on the

0:33

Labour benches. I think the first thing

0:35

we learned uh is that the prime minister

0:38

seems to have confirmed what Ollie

0:39

Robbins said yesterday about Matthew

0:43

Doyle, who was his uh comm's chief at

0:47

number 10. Um Ollie Robbins said that he

0:50

had been asked for the foreign office to

0:52

find him. a nice ambassadorial

0:55

role and he'd resisted that said you

0:58

know he doesn't have the right

0:59

experience and that uh he were going to

1:02

have to make cuts of good people as it

1:05

was. Now the prime minister said uh when

1:09

asked to confirm this well you know when

1:11

somebody leaves a role uh often there's

1:14

conversations about other roles that

1:16

they might apply for. So uh very much a

1:19

sort of nothing to see here uh line

1:24

coming from him. No apology for that

1:26

whatsoever. The problem with that is uh

1:28

that people will say people are saying

1:31

that this is jobs for the boys and

1:34

another example of cronyism because uh

1:38

Matthew Doyle didn't become an

1:41

ambassador but he was given a periage in

1:43

the House of Lords. Uh the Labour whip

1:45

has been subsequently stripped from him

1:48

because it turns out that he maintained

1:50

a friendship with a convicted sex

1:54

offender after the conviction. So Ed

1:56

Davyy, the Lib Dem leader, has said

1:59

another Labour crony friends with

2:02

another convictive pedophile. they see a

2:06

pattern and a direct link of course with

2:08

a Mandlesson appointment uh when he was

2:11

known to be uh friends with a convicted

2:14

pedophile Jeffrey Epstein even after

2:17

he'd been in jail. Um Kemmy Bnock tried

2:21

to get him on whether full due process

2:25

was followed as he said in the comments

2:27

uh back in September. He is absolutely

2:31

adamant that it was Chem Badno is having

2:34

none of it. And to be honest, we got

2:36

really bogged down in procedural

2:39

explanations. But uh Kem Badnock, I

2:42

thought one of her punchiest lines was

2:44

she said, "I don't know what planet the

2:45

prime minister is on. Appointing someone

2:48

known with known links to the Kremlin

2:51

was not full due process." And we know

2:54

uh that the vetting procedure did flag

2:58

uh his connections to companies in China

3:00

and Russia particularly as being a

3:04

national security risk. And then the

3:08

final point is uh yes Kemade not called

3:12

um for him to go. I think others called

3:13

for him to go as well. But uh the prime

3:16

minister is having none of it and he

3:17

says nothing will distract me from

3:20

delivering for the country. and then he

3:23

reeled off a whole load of things that

3:24

he says the Labor government is doing.

3:26

But the problem is this is distracting

3:29

them. We are all here talking about how

3:32

long the prime minister can last uh who

3:36

might uh try to take him out, who might

3:39

replace him. All of this scandal, all of

3:42

this drama, which was exactly what Saki

3:46

Starama promised a government led by him

3:50

would not do. They promised a change

3:52

from the chaos under the Conservatives

3:55

and here we are again.

3:57

>> Well, Katherine Fster, thank you very

3:59

much indeed for that. Uh we're joined in

4:01

the studio here uh by our Labour MP, the

4:04

Labour MP for Heartley, Jonathan Brash,

4:06

and our Conservative MP for the Isle of

4:08

White uh is of White East, I should say,

4:11

Joe Robertson. Uh so, uh Jonathan, let's

4:14

start with you. Let's put to you that

4:16

question that uh Katherine Fster

4:19

reiterated. The prime minister is trying

4:21

to say he's not distracted,

4:24

but clearly the government is

4:26

distracted. Three days in parliament on

4:28

the trot have now been talking about

4:30

this scandal. Yeah. I mean, I've got to

4:32

be clear. I am completely fed up to the

4:35

back teeth of this psycho drama in

4:38

Westminster, the own goals that are

4:40

coming from the heart of this

4:41

government. Meanwhile, we've got

4:44

fantastic Labor counselors, canvases,

4:47

activists up and down the country,

4:49

working hard and delivering for their

4:51

constituencies like mine in Hartley in

4:53

the facing local elections in the shadow

4:55

of this absolute mess. They just need to

4:58

get a grip. I'm completely fed up about

5:00

it. And I and I think it's it's got to

5:03

the point now where I genuinely think

5:05

that, you know, as far as the prime

5:07

minister is concerned, it's not a case

5:08

of if, it's when. And I just think we

5:11

need to get a handle on this because

5:14

people out there are worried about their

5:16

cost of living. They're worried about

5:17

their NHS. They're worried about crime

5:18

on their streets. And we're completely

5:20

consumed by this scandal. And it's

5:23

completely unacceptable. And as I'm sure

5:26

you can tell, I'm quite angry about it.

5:27

>> You're saying it's if, not when the

5:29

prime minister should resign.

5:31

>> Yeah. I mean, ultimately, we're in a

5:33

situation now where I don't think anyone

5:34

reasonably expects the prime minister to

5:37

lead the party into the next election.

5:39

And I think that we have to refocus this

5:42

government on the priorities of the

5:43

British people. Refocus it on delivering

5:46

which fantastic candidates and

5:48

councilors are doing up and down the

5:49

country right now in constituencies like

5:51

Heartleyool where they're bringing

5:53

investment, whether

5:54

>> we have to stay away from the party

5:55

political broadcast, I'm afraid.

5:57

>> Well, I mean the reality is is that I'm

5:59

sure it's true uh across the parties

6:01

about what's happening in terms of

6:03

working very hard for these local

6:04

elections. But the reality is why cuz

6:08

you just said something incredibly

6:09

significant then that you want your

6:13

leader the prime minister to go.

6:16

>> Why?

6:16

>> Because ultimately we've become

6:18

completely consumed by this turmoil at a

6:22

time when that is not what the British

6:24

public are focused on. They are focused

6:25

on their cost of living. They are

6:27

focused on the NHS. Now I think it's a

6:29

reasonable thing to set a timetable to

6:32

get this done in a in an orderly way

6:34

because we have got a very very big job

6:36

ahead of us. You know the next general

6:38

election is in 2029. We've got conflict.

6:41

>> It won't be if you if you change leaders

6:43

>> because they'll have no mandate.

6:44

>> Well I I I mean I think we've seen from

6:46

the from from from Joe's previous

6:48

administration that's not true. They

6:50

went the full five years and they had I

6:51

can't even remember how many leaders

6:52

they had in that time.

6:54

>> Three in that one parl.

6:55

>> Well there you go. Um, but the reality

6:57

is we have to focus on what the British

6:59

people care about. And we're being

7:00

consumed by the psycho drama.

7:02

>> There's nothing more important than
