FULLSTÄNDIGT TRANSKRIPT

0:00

Yesterday, the prime minister released

0:02

yet another video that repeated the same

0:04

speech that he's been giving for the

0:06

last year about the US. He recycled the

0:09

same promises and reused the same old

0:11

lines. This time with a little more

0:12

dramatic flare.

0:13

>> Pierre Polyv did something that he

0:15

doesn't normally do and hasn't done in a

0:17

very long time. And the media was

0:20

certainly caught offguard by that.

0:23

Business leaders are currently

0:24

testifying about their frustration with

0:26

the Carney Liberals. But don't worry, he

0:29

did appoint a new council to deal with

0:32

that one. I'm Jasmine Lane. Like, share,

0:35

subscribe, and comment your thoughts

0:36

down below. And according to a new poll,

0:40

Canadians want a new conservative

0:42

leader. Or at least that's what they

0:44

want you to think by the headline.

0:46

Carney is getting the kind of media

0:48

coverage that politicians can only dream

0:52

of or survive because of though it looks

0:56

like they're starting to call that out

0:58

too.

0:59

>> And what has Mark Carney done really in

1:02

a year on this? He hasn't held

1:04

negotiations in 5 months. The Mexicans

1:07

are going to be at the table formally

1:09

with the Americans any day. The only

1:10

talks that Mark Carney is doing are

1:13

YouTube videos uh where he's comparing

1:15

himself to Sir Isaac Brock and holding

1:17

up little figurines in his office.

1:19

>> Pierre Polyv participated in the press

1:22

scrum ahead of House of Commons

1:23

proceedings today which he has not done

1:25

in a very long time and normally doesn't

1:27

do. Mark Carney's done a few of them as

1:30

well. But uh yeah, he was on fire this

1:33

morning. He really was. It lasted nine

1:35

minutes which is exceptional. What is

1:39

Mark Carney's plan? What are his

1:41

intentions? Has Mr. Carney even stated

1:44

whether he wants to re renew USMCA at

1:47

all? He said yesterday trade with the US

1:49

is a big in his video he said trade with

1:52

the US is a big weakness. So does that

1:55

mean that he wants to end USMCA?

1:58

If he wants it renegotiated,

2:00

does he want a full overhaul, a few

2:02

tweaks? What are his demands? Has he

2:06

waved the right flag on getting rid of

2:08

the tariffs on aluminum, steel, autos,

2:11

and and lumber? Or is he still fighting

2:13

that fight? Does anybody know what Mark

2:16

Carney's plan is? I I I don't honestly I

2:18

I mean, does anyone anybody here know

2:20

what his plan is? you.

2:21

>> What is notable is that the US is by far

2:25

Canada's largest trading partner and the

2:28

USMCA or KUSMA as we call it here. It

2:31

underpins manufacturing, supply chains,

2:34

energy, exports, agriculture, everything

2:36

that is so very deeply integrated, built

2:39

over decades.

2:41

And we are already seeing Canadian

2:43

businesses relocating or expanding into

2:46

the US. We're seeing investment

2:48

uncertainty continuing to grow as well

2:51

as talent, especially young

2:53

professionals leaving. It's like

2:55

historically high margins of successful

2:57

Canadians leaving. And yet the Liberals

3:01

will frequently say, well, we have the

3:03

highest we have a historical amount of

3:05

foreign direct investment

3:08

of foreign entities buying Canadian

3:11

businesses. And then the people who

3:13

created those businesses are more often

3:15

than not just selling it off and living

3:18

rich or they're starting new businesses

3:21

outside of Canada because it's not worth

3:23

it for them here. That's not an

3:25

accomplishment. In a healthy society, in

3:27

a healthy economy to have high FDI on on

3:31

businesses buying Canadian companies, um

3:35

that's not inherently a bad thing. But

3:37

when you when you add it to all of the

3:40

other little points, the signal that it

3:42

sends is actually quite bad. And if

3:44

anything, you know, they want to say

3:45

that, oh, we're not dependent on the US.

3:47

Well, when the US is buying up Canadian

3:49

businesses because Canadian business

3:51

owners don't want them, can't afford

3:53

them, or are moving out of the country.

3:55

>> Windsor is reeling. A$ 16 billion dollar

3:59

industry in Windsor has just been

4:02

smashed with an in increased tariffs on

4:05

particularly mold making. Have you heard

4:08

Mark Carney even mention it? He was busy

4:11

waving around a figurine of Sir Isaac

4:13

Brock comparing himself to a a 19th

4:17

century war hero. And yet he doesn't

4:20

have a single word to utter about the

4:23

people of Windsor whose jobs are

4:25

hemorrhaging in light of these new

4:27

tariffs. He refuses to stand up against

4:29

these wrongheaded American tariffs. He's

4:32

done absolutely nothing on this file in

4:35

the last year other than use it to stoke

4:38

fear and distract from his catastrophic

4:40

failings here at home. Before shifting

4:42

gears a little bit here, I wanted to

4:44

highlight the press gallery and their

4:47

response to having such a lengthy

4:49

interaction with Pierre Polyv this

4:51

morning. I thought it was kind of funny.

5:02

What? What's going on?

5:05

>> We are still incredibly dependent on the

5:07

USA, which again in and of itself is not

5:10

inherently a bad thing, especially when

5:13

you have this massive source of revenue

5:16

that's helped your country immensely.

5:17

And then you're using that revenue to

5:19

increase capacity, increase your

5:21

exports, build the infrastructure. That

5:24

all of that is such a winning economic

5:27

move. Except we haven't done any of it.

5:29

>> Sorry. You're saying to me, Dan, that

5:32

you have push back in media circles

5:35

because you talk about the absurdity of

5:37

net zero, which has caused this arguably

5:39

the cornerstone of this crisis.

5:42

Incredible, isn't it? I mean, they don't

5:44

like net zero. They don't want me to

5:46

talk about it. They want to talk about

5:47

gasoline in a vacuum. I'm not prepared

5:49

to do that. And the first evidence that

5:51

they can't allow me to do that or that I

5:53

won't do that is the Canadian dollar.

5:55

It's never behaved in a way where it

5:57

hasn't been the petroy. Yeah, I think

5:59

that's what the election was for. To

6:00

your point, I'm not sure what we learned

6:02

in the video released yesterday. That is

6:05

fundamentally different from how this

6:06

government is approaching things uh now

6:09

and as they were in in April. So,

6:11

politics is about timing. Uh and I

6:13

wonder what the timing of this video is

6:15

supposed to indicate to people. Um there

6:17

hasn't been a marketked change or

6:20

development in the status of

6:21

negotiations between Canada and the US

6:23

since the prime minister took office.

6:26

Um, I would say yesterday's video

6:29

probably leaves Canadians with an

6:30

understanding that we're not any closer

6:31

to that than than maybe we were uh in

6:34

the fall or or sometime last spring. So,

6:36

so why now? My prediction uh is is

6:39

twofold. One, uh the prime minister is

6:42

reminding Canadians, to Bond's point,

6:44

everyday Canadians that uh Donald Trump

6:46

is to blame for all of Canada's

6:47

problems. I.e. even though I have a

6:49

majority government, I'm really not the

6:51

problem guys. Uh check south of the

6:53

border. Uh, and I wonder what it means

6:54

for next week's spring economic

6:56

statement. I do think that we're going

6:57

to see extraordinary spending. We saw

6:59

some comments from the IMF suggesting

7:01

that the debt to GDP ratio uh can

7:03

increase uh based on Canada's fiscal

7:05

position. I think the government's going

7:06

to take that ball and run uh and they're

7:08

going to use the uncertainty with the

7:10

United States as a backdrop for more

7:12

deficit spending.

7:13

>> I've said it before and I will say it

7:15

again. The same reason why Mark Carney

7:18

won the election is also probably why he

7:22

is going to be pushed out of Canada.

7:26

Because you do not pivot away from

7:28

geography, your largest trading partner.

7:30

You don't pivot away from a shared

7:33

border in which whatever your pivots are

7:35

are going to have massive implications

7:38

to that shared border. You don't pivot

7:41

away from integrated infrastructure,

7:43

cultural, and even legal alignment.

7:46

None of that is replaceable in even

7:49

decades if you really wanted to. So, I

7:52

don't think this is really an economic

7:54

strategy. I think this is political

7:56

positioning. And I'm willing to bet that
