Hello. Glad you can join us. Here's what
we have for you this Thursday. Oil
turmoil and the even bumpier ride for
drivers.
>> If your car can maintain a steady,
consistent speed that will improve your
fuel economy.
>> Tips on how to ease the gas guzzling
pressure.
>> We have a series of screenings and we
take action. The fallout after an
Iranian soccer delegate is forbidden to
enter Canada.
>> Two young children go missing and we
have no answers. So, we've not let up.
>> Plus, what the RCMP is asking for a year
after two young siblings went missing.
>> CTV National News with Sandy Ronaldo.
>> And we begin with breaking news. US
President Donald Trump has authorized a
new pipeline today that would move
Canadian oil to the US.
>> Slightly different than the last
administration.
They would sign a pipeline deal and we
have pipelines going up.
>> All right, here's what we know about
this. The proposed pipeline is expected
to transport Canadian crude from a
prairie border to Wyoming and could cost
about $2 billion American. The pipeline
was proposed by US company Bridger and
Canadian company South Bow and would
revive portions of the canceled Keystone
XL oil pipeline. The project could
increase Canada's crude exports to the
US by more than 12% if it goes ahead.
Now, the Office of Canada's Minister of
Energy and Natural Resources said it is
aware of the permits to the Bridger
Pipeline, but didn't say much more. In
the meantime, get ready to pay more at
the pumps as the conflict in Iran shows
no signs of resolution. Gas prices in
Canada shot up again today, even more
than yesterday, steep increase, and the
expectation is a lot more of this before
the situation improves. CTV's Adrien
Gobriel now on the rising prices and the
impact at the pump. Hey Adrian, what do
you have?
>> Sandy, for those hoping for a break here
at the gas station, unfortunately, I
don't have much in the way of
encouraging news. Prices increased
today. They're expected to do the same
across the country tomorrow. And with no
clear path towards a peace deal in Iran
or a reopening of the Straight of
Hermuz, oil prices are set to climb even
higher.
Fuming while fueling up.
>> I'm fed up. I can't take it anymore.
>> From fed up to frustration to, you know,
the next step is despair. The pain at
the pump has hit a new peak due to these
average prices across the country today
with Vancouver topping out as the most
expensive city at nearly 217 a liter
depending on where you live. A
cross-country spike between 8 to 12
cents is predicted to be on tap for
tomorrow.
>> Whether you be in Vancouver, Montreal,
Toronto, or the East Coast, Atlantic
Canada, prices are going up everywhere.
While the price humanity has paid for
the war in Iran can't be qualified in
dollars and cents, the subsequent
closure of the Strait of Hormuz by Iran
is costing the global economy billions
with 20% of the world's oil supply
unable to pass through these troubled
waters.
>> The United States blockade of Iranian
shipping is costing the Iranian regime
about $500 million a day in lost oil
revenues. And for the United States, I
mean, they've spent about$2 billion
dollars worth of munitions.
>> Economists say the closure of the strait
has already been priced into the oil
market. Fears of a prolonged conflict in
Iran is now driving prices towards
record levels.
>> The more that prices continue to rise is
more belief in the markets that this
isn't going to resolve itself anytime
soon.
>> Even if a peace deal were to be reached
today, those keeping a close eye on the
oil market believe it would take months
before any reprieve arrives. The gap
that has been created is over a billion
barrels of oil a day is missing. It's
going to take a long time to recover
that vessels don't travel at light speed
uh to move oil from one place to
another.
>> For Canadians, the impact could reach
far beyond the price at the pumps. If
the conflict isn't resolved by this
summer, there's legitimate concerns that
inflation could once again tick upwards
along with interest rates. Some
petroleum analysts believe without a
timely resolution in the street of
Hermuz, we could see gas prices climb
another 50 cents per liter across the
country in the months ahead. Sandy.
>> Oh, Adrian say it isn't so. All right,
then. How can you make the most of
coping with these high gas prices? Is
there a way to ease the pain during this
difficult time? CTV's John Venavali
tackles that assignment. And John, I'm
looking forward to hearing what you've
learned.
Sandy, there are things motorists can
do, and chances are you've heard some of
these before, but experts say added up,
they really can save you between 10 to
20% on fuel costs.
>> Let's go check your tire pressure.
>> Terresa Deal with the CIA showed us one
of the easiest things drivers looking to
save on gas should do right now. check
the tire pressures on their vehicle and
make sure they're at the recommended
level, which is listed on a sticker you
can find inside the driver's side door
jam.
>> Underinflated tires can reduce your fuel
efficiency by 4%.
>> If a tire is underinflated, it has a
higher rolling resistance and the tire
has to work harder to get down the road.
A survey last year found only about a
quarter of Canadian motorists check
their tire pressure monthly. Another
thing you can do, look in the trunk to
see if there's anything you don't need
and remove it. An extra 45 kgs or 100
pounds in a vehicle can increase fuel
consumption up to 1%.
>> If you were carrying around a bag of
salt or sand to weigh down your car in
the snow, it's time to take it out and
help your fuel efficiency.
>> If you've got roof racks or bikes
hanging off the rear, remove them when
not in use because they can, of course,
impact the vehicle's aerodynamics. It
causes a drag on your car and your car
has to work harder which means it's
using more fuel.
>> And experts say try to drive evenly and
avoid hard acceleration and sudden
braking whenever possible with
aggressive driving shown to lower gas
mileage 15 to 30% at highway speeds.
Consider using cruise control on the
highway to make things steady.
>> It's nice to like have slow
acceleration, gradual speed increase.
According to Consumer Reports, another
tip, skip the premium gas unless a
higher octane is required for your
vehicle. And checking gas prices online
using apps and websites can help find
cheaper prices in your area. That's
because experts say prices in the city
can vary as much as 10 cents between
stations, so it can pay to check. Sandy,
>> lots of good information, John. Thank
you. A war of words today between the US
and Iran whose supreme leader struck a
defiant tone in a written message to the
Americans that was read on state
television.
In the statement, Mushtabi wrote, quote,
"The bright future of the Persian Gulf
region will be a future without
America." He also took a hard line in
regards to Iran's nuclear potential,
writing that Iran will protect its
nuclear and missile capabilities as a
national asset. The message contradicts
President Trump, who once again today
reemphasized his conditions for a deal.
