Today's episode is about one word,

0:02

excellence. Whenever I hear these

0:04

stories about people who are excellent

0:05

or what it took to become excellent or

0:07

what it took to make something happen

0:08

that was truly excellent, it makes me

0:11

want to run through a wall for the rest

0:12

of the day. So, that's the gift to a

0:13

listener. If you're if you're listening

0:14

to this in the morning, you're going to

0:15

want to run through a wall after you

0:16

listen to this.

0:23

Sam, it's morning time. Would you like

0:25

some FOMO pancakes? because I'm about to

0:27

drizzle some FOMO pancakes right in

0:29

front of you.

0:30

>> For some reason, when you say the word

0:31

drizzle, I ought to I'm out. You're out.

0:34

>> Yeah,

0:35

>> I've never been able to pull that word

0:36

off.

0:36

>> Yeah, I don't think anyone has.

0:39

We um as you know, we're hosting our

0:42

annual event. Me and Ben host this

0:44

annual event called Hoop Group with Mr.

0:46

Beast, and we're hosting it in about a

0:47

week. And I was just catching up with

0:50

Ben. Ben takes the charge on on like

0:53

>> everything in your life.

0:54

>> Yeah. Yeah. Doing doing the things. And

0:56

I just like keep lobbing in ideas and

0:58

then I'm basically the most annoying

1:00

guy. It's like he says, "Hey, here's

1:02

everything we got." And I'm like, "Can't

1:03

we just make it better?" He's like,

1:04

"Okay, well, how?" I'm like, "I don't

1:06

know. Just just think big." And I say

1:08

generic things like that and I'll be

1:10

like, "You know, I just got off the

1:12

podcast with this guy. What would he

1:13

do?" And he's like, "I don't know. What

1:15

did what did he tell you about?" Like, I

1:16

don't know. Go listen to that. You get

1:17

inspired. But

1:18

>> by the way, you call it lobbing ideas.

1:21

the someone I said that to my coach the

1:23

other day and she goes, "That's called

1:25

swooping and pooping." Yeah. When you

1:27

fly in and you just leave a bunch of

1:28

crap.

1:29

>> Exactly. They've been working hard and

1:30

then you just swoop in and you poop. But

1:32

I do it in the name of high standards.

1:34

Uh and that's that's how you get away

1:35

with anything. That's how you get away

1:36

with being an [ __ ] You just say,

1:37

"No, I'm not an [ __ ] I have high

1:39

standards." But the my standards have

1:41

been exceeded by what Ben has pulled off

1:43

uh with this event. I just need to tell

1:44

you some things about this event. Okay.

1:46

For those who don't know, for the last

1:48

few years, every year we host a

1:50

basketball camp. So, it's kind of like a

1:52

basketball camp for billionaires was the

1:54

the idea, the dream. There's lots of

1:56

different conferences. There's lots of

1:57

different networking events. And I hate

2:00

conferences and I hate network events.

2:02

And despite me talking a lot on this

2:03

podcast, I'm actually kind of an

2:04

introvert. I don't really enjoy going to

2:06

events. And we wanted to do something,

2:09

but the idea of just creating yet

2:11

another thing that was very much like

2:13

everything else that existed was not

2:15

appealing. Were you guys just sitting

2:16

around? Are our conferences dub?

2:19

>> Well, it started with we should do one,

2:21

man. We have a big audience. We know all

2:22

these interesting people. What if we

2:23

hosted an event? And it's like great,

2:25

like a like a networking event. Yay.

2:28

It's like, no, no, it could be like, I

2:29

don't know, like people come and talk.

2:30

And we're like, oh, a conference, yay.

2:33

And so then I learned this from on my

2:35

first business. This guy told me like

2:36

irritation leads to innovation. So back

2:38

then it was a restaurant business and he

2:40

was telling me I was saying how much I

2:41

hate food delivery and he's like, "Well,

2:43

that's the opportunity. Make food

2:44

delivery. doesn't suck and suddenly

2:46

you'll take something that's really bad

2:48

and just by like making it not suck the

2:52

gap between where it normally is and

2:54

where you are is really big and so

2:56

similarly the idea with this was well

2:58

what would be a conference we would want

3:00

to go to and so we just started

3:02

spitballing with like a you know

3:04

childlike energy where it was like I

3:05

don't know like instead of ice breakers

3:08

like what if we just like what if it was

3:11

based around sports we love sports what

3:12

if we combine two things we really love

3:14

meeting interesting, inspiring business

3:16

people, but then basketball. And so the

3:18

idea became, we play basketball all day.

3:21

What if we got an NBA trainer to come

3:23

train us like a fantasy camp? And we

3:25

invite people who are really, you know,

3:27

successful and interesting, but they

3:29

love to hoop. And so we we all first we

3:31

play basketball. It's the ultimate

3:32

equalizer, icebreaker. People get to

3:34

know each other. And then at night, you

3:36

talk shop in the kind of like we all

3:37

stay in in a couple of houses and we all

3:39

talk shop there. And you've been to two

3:41

of these that we've we've thrown. So you

3:42

you kind of get the idea.

3:44

>> Yeah, it's great.

3:45

>> Here's the here's just a snippet of the

3:46

guest list. So, uh, Mr. Beast, as you

3:49

know, he's helps co-host it. Shaq is

3:52

coming this year. You you you're so

3:54

American, you may not know this name,

3:55

but Gerard PK, one of the great soccer

3:58

players, uh, in in like the one of the

4:00

world famous soccer players who was

4:01

married to Shakira for a period of time.

4:03

He he's coming. Uh, the richest man in

4:05

New Zealand is coming. Four different

4:07

NBA team.

4:07

>> Who's the richest man in New Zealand?

4:09

>> Nick Mobre.

4:10

>> Oh, that's cool.

4:12

Scooter Braun is coming. We got there's

4:14

just a crazy and like some of our

4:16

favorite Jesse Sler, Hayes, Jesse Cole

4:18

from Savannah Bananas. 17 billionaires

4:21

are coming to this event which is pretty

4:22

insane. So, I just wanted to tell you

4:24

about like the

4:26

first just give you a little bit of FOMO

4:28

cuz you couldn't make it this year. So,

4:29

I wanted to give you a little FOMO on

4:31

who's in the room.

4:31

>> I think the only two people that gave me

4:33

true FOMO there. So, well, first of all,

4:36

actually, wait, actually, hold on. Let

4:37

me think. Jesse Sler is awesome. So, I

4:39

like him. I'm fortunate that I've been

4:41

able to hang out with him so I have less

4:42

FOMO, but he is amazing. He was probably

4:44

the best person I hung out with there

4:45

last year. But uh Jesse Cole and uh the

4:49

uh Nick Mobre, is that his name? Nick

4:50

Mobre.

4:51

>> Yeah,

4:51

>> probably those two guys. Those two guys

4:53

is who who I'd want to meet most.

4:55

>> Yeah, I also just want to see Shaq in

4:57

person. I think that's just going to be

4:58

incredible.

4:59

>> That I don't understand. Shaq doesn't

5:01

seem like a guy who codes the

5:03

sleepovers.

5:05

>> Well, he's coming to ours. All right. Is

5:07

he sleeping there or is he just popping

5:09

in?

5:09

>> Yeah, he's coming. He's He's an

5:11

attendee. Okay. And so I've bragged

5:13

about how cool this event is, but there

5:14

are a couple of downsides. The first is

5:17

the event is not a roster of names. It's

5:20

a vibe. It's how you how it actually

5:22

feels to be there. And I'm really

5:24

worried this year that we might have

5:25

screwed it up by inviting too many kind

5:28

of bigname people who were used to being

5:29

the center of attention. We got, I

5:31

think, pretty lucky the first couple

5:33

years that all the most interesting

5:35

people were also great hangs, just

5:38

really down to earth, really fun to be

5:39

around, which I don't think is going to

5:41

be true for like your average

5:42

billionaire, your average celebrity,

5:44

right? Like I think people are just used

5:46

to being kind of the center of attention

5:48

and being a little standoffish. So, I'm

5:49

really worried about that. I hope we

5:50

didn't screw it up. I might be coming

5:51

back on here in a couple weeks and say,

5:53

"Hey, look, you know, it was it was fun,

5:54

but lesson learned. You know, too much

5:56

of anything is a problem." And the other
