A legendary name that will never die.

0:55

The Red Baron.

0:58

Success after success came to Jasta 11 under the Red Baron’s tutelage.

1:04

Richthofen had been a student of a genius aviation tactician named Oswald Boelcke.

1:10

Boelke’s dictates were the essential rules for successful air combat.

1:15

Richtofen embraced them,

1:17

taught them

1:18

and enhanced them.

1:24

“How can I be like you?”

1:26

“Aim for the man and don’t miss him”

1:30

He urged his men to fight on and fly on to the last drop of blood and the last drop of fuel,

1:37

to the last beat of the heart.

1:40

Richthofen and his Jasta 11 would become the nemesis of the Royal Flying Corps.

1:44

The Jasta 11 in the heavens would seem like gods or demons to those on the ground.

1:50

Stuck in the mud and the trenches.

The Red Baron.

2:07

But there was one thing that all sides agreed upon…

2:10

He was the King of the Sky.

2:37

Death from above, you're under fire

2:42

Stained red as blood, he's roaming higher

2:47

Born a soldier from the horseback to the skies

2:52

That's where the legend will arise

2:56

And he's flying

2:57

2:59

3:07

First to the scene, he is a lethal machine

3:09

It's bloody April and the tide is turning

3:12

Fire at will, it is the thrill of the kill

3:14

Four in a day shot down with engines burning

3:17

Embrace the fame, red squadron leader

3:22

Call out his name: "Rote Kampfflieger"

3:28

In the game to win, a gambler rolls the dice

3:33

Eighty allies paid the price

3:36

And he's flying

3:37

Higher, the king of the sky

3:40

He's flying too fast and he's flying too high

3:42

Higher, an eye for an eye

3:45

The legend will never die

3:57

Higher

4:02

Higher, the king of the sky

4:05

He's flying too fast and he's flying too high

4:08

Higher, an eye for an eye

4:10

The legend will never die

4:13

Higher

4:39

Born a soldier from the horseback to the skies

4:43

And the legend never dies

4:47

And he's flying

4:48

And he's flying

4:49

And he's flying

4:51

Higher, the king of the sky

4:53

He's flying too fast and he's flying too high

4:56

Higher, an eye for an eye

4:58

The legend will never die

5:01

Higher, the king of the sky

5:03

He's flying too fast and he's flying too high

5:06

Higher, an eye for an eye

5:08

The legend will never die

5:23

His injuries caused him repeated issues with headaches and nausea.

5:27

He also suffered a change in mood and temperament, which became darker.

5:32

The thrill of combat lessened.

5:34

He wrote

5:35

"I am in wretched spirits after every aerial combat.

5:39

I believe that the war is not as the people at home imagine it,

5:43

with a hurrah and a roar;

5:45

it is very serious,

5:46

very grim”.

5:49

On April the 21st, 1918.

5:52

The Red Baron got into his famous Fokker tri-plane and took off into the morning sky.

5:58

It was the flight that would bring his life to an end.

6:03

He spotted a Sopwith camel and gave chase.

6:06

This time it seems he may have not realized he was behind enemy lines while chasing the Sopwith

6:11

at a very low altitude.

6:13

At the time due to wind conditions and the moving of the front lines

6:17

he uncharacteristically continued the chase too far.

6:26

In the last moments of his life, he managed to make a rough landing in a field north of the village of Vaux-sur-Somme.

6:33

Several Australian servicemen rushed up to the downed triplane to hear the Red Baron’s last words…

6:40

“Kaputt”.

6:42

The King of the Sky was dead, but his legend would never die.

6:49

The Red Baron was treated with great respect and was interred with full military honors by the personnel

6:55

of No. 3 Squadron Australian Flying Corps.

6:58

Allied squadrons stationed nearby came to pay their respects.

7:02

Memorial wreaths were laid... one of which was inscribed with the words,

7:07

"To Our Gallant and Worthy Foe".
