VOLLSTÄNDIGE ABSCHRIFT

0:00

I want to start this video by thanking

0:01

Framework for flying me out to their

0:03

event in San Francisco. They put me up

0:04

in a nice hotel and fed me yummy food.

0:07

That being said, their hospitality did

0:09

not sway my opinions on their

0:10

announcements. Let's start with the star

0:13

of the show, a brand new version of

0:14

their Framework 13, the 13 Pro. The

0:18

Framework 13 Pro is bringing us a

0:19

refined CNC aluminum chassis. It comes

0:22

in black, aka graphite, which looks

0:24

quite sharp. Silver looks a little dated

0:26

in my opinion, even on something like

0:27

the MacBook Pros. and the black feels

0:29

more modern. The new color does pick up

0:32

fingerprints pretty badly, so it's still

0:34

available in silver if you prefer that.

0:36

The new chassis feels a bit more premium

0:37

and well-built, but the difference was

0:40

not as big as I was expecting. The size

0:42

and form factor itself couldn't change

0:44

too much because they've made it

0:45

backwards and forwards compatible. All

0:47

the displays fit in both chassis. Old

0:49

mainboards can go in the new chassis and

0:51

vice versa. On the keyboard, there is

0:53

now an alternate color way, as Framework

0:55

calls it, with gray and orange accent

0:57

keys on their black keyboard. I love

0:59

this. It truly makes it look like a

1:01

laptop that belongs to a coder. On the

1:04

other hand, they have a lavender accent

1:06

option, too, which I expected to like

1:08

more, but I think the white text on the

1:10

lighter lavender keys makes them hard to

1:12

read. Another big announcement on this

1:14

new 13 Pro is that we are getting a

1:16

brighter 2.8K touchscreen option. This

1:19

not only helps small text look sharper

1:20

with its high resolution, but also adds

1:23

functionality we did not have

1:24

previously. It's rare that we see a

1:26

matte non-reflective display that also

1:28

supports touch. As with the prior

1:31

screens, it is still 13.5 in with a 3x2

1:33

aspect ratio, which provides more

1:35

vertical space than many modern laptops.

1:37

Still, it's disappointing that it's an

1:39

IPS panel, not an OLED or tandem OLED.

1:42

Instead of the screen, the crowd was

1:44

more excited by the haptic touchpad. We

1:46

know that touchpads were Windows and

1:48

Linux laptops have typically fallen

1:50

behind MacBook Pro. So, we put a ton of

1:52

focus on this. Framework's mechanical

1:54

trackpad might be one of the better ones

1:56

I've used, but finally having a haptic

1:58

option is great. I got to try the

2:00

touchpad, and I think the tap to click

2:02

was a bit too sensitive. I found myself

2:05

double clicking a little, but tracking

2:07

felt smooth. Hopefully, on a production

2:09

unit with some minor settings changes,

2:11

it would be fine. In terms of overall

2:12

quality and premium feel, this laptop is

2:14

nicer than it used to be, but not as

2:16

nice as something like Lenovo's Yoga

2:18

Slim 7i Ultra. That is the most premium

2:20

laptop I've ever used. The Framework 13

2:23

Pro simply isn't at that level, but I'd

2:25

say it's getting to the level of other

2:27

metal laptops like the Samsung Galaxy

2:29

Book 6 Pros. Now, while these

2:32

improvements are great, the new Intel

2:33

processors are just as exciting. All

2:36

three CPU options offer benefits that we

2:38

haven't seen in prior framework 13s. To

2:40

help you figure out how these perform,

2:41

I'll be showing you some example laptops

2:43

with these chips. First, you've got the

2:45

higherend 16 core X CPUs, which offer

2:47

solid performance rivaling Apple's M5

2:50

base chip, but definitely not at the

2:52

level of an M5 Pro chip, both of which

2:54

can be found around this price point.

2:56

They've also included a 100 watt charger

2:57

to support these new 16 core Panther

2:59

Lake chips. The 8 core CPU falls near

3:02

the bottom here, but it lasts forever on

3:05

battery, which is probably where

3:06

Framework's 20our battery life claim is

3:08

coming from. Of course, we'll have to

3:10

test that and see what it actually gets

3:12

because they test video playback and we

3:15

don't feel that's very realistic. We do

3:18

office tasks instead and likely at

3:20

higher brightness, which is closer to

3:22

what we think someone would actually do

3:24

unplugged. We should still be seeing

3:26

much better battery life than last gen

3:28

though, especially since they've

3:29

included a larger 74-watth battery

3:31

instead of the 61. This new one is still

3:34

compact enough to fit in the same space

3:36

as the smaller one, though. Lastly, back

3:38

on the CPU options, both higherend X

3:40

chips bring awesome integrated GPU

3:42

performance, similar to an entry-level

3:44

dedicated GPU. I often use Xchip laptops

3:47

for light creative work, like reviewing

3:49

our videos at lower resolutions, and

3:50

they do a good job of that. Another

3:52

improvement to the internals is the 13

3:54

Pro's LP cam memory modules. These can

3:56

offer fast memory speeds comparable to

3:59

soldered RAM while still being

4:01

replaceable. This technology is super

4:03

cool. We're glad to see Framework is the

4:05

first to truly embrace it here, but

4:08

let's talk about where the team and I

4:10

were a little disappointed. There is

4:11

still a single fan cooling solution.

4:14

Panther Lake is more efficient than

4:15

prior chips, yes, but I still think

4:18

we're going to want two fans with those

4:19

more powerful X CPUs. A more effective

4:22

cooling solution means less fan noise

4:24

under heavy load and a cooler feeling

4:26

laptop. I imagine this decision was made

4:28

because of compatibility, but I do hope

4:31

they find a way around it soon. We'll

4:33

have to wait and see how it does under

4:34

load. So, get subscribed with the

4:36

notification bell on so you can see our

4:37

full review when it drops. We'll test

4:39

all of its performance modes to see

4:40

which has the best balance between

4:42

performance, heat, and fan noise. Okay,

4:45

now for the rest of the announcements.

4:46

The Framework 16 is getting a facelift,

4:49

or I guess you could say they're filling

4:51

in the cracks. One of the biggest

4:53

complaints about the Framework 16 is how

4:54

its modular design around the keyboard

4:56

and trackpad makes it look janky and

4:58

sometimes even cheap. The pieces moved

5:00

around a bit when you touch them. So,

5:02

I'm glad to see a new haptic touchpad

5:04

that comes on a singular plate, which

5:06

looks much cleaner and more cohesive.

5:08

The part housing the keyboard will also

5:10

have a single plate option. Both of

5:12

these make the laptop look much better,

5:14

but it's still a clunky laptop. Another

5:16

new product for the Framework 16 is this

5:18

new Oculink dev kit, where you can use

5:20

an external GPU directly via eight PCIe

5:23

lanes. This avoids the bandwidth issues

5:25

of other external GPUs that connect via

5:27

USBC or Thunderbolt. With this dev kit,

5:29

you can either connect to a framework

5:31

GPU module or a desktop GPU. We're

5:34

actually testing quite a few external

5:35

GPUs right now for a big video on them.

5:37

I'll add this one to our list. The last

5:39

product they went over was their new

5:40

wireless touchpad keyboard, which I will

5:43

admit looks a lot like a product I

5:45

already have in my home. We use ours for

5:47

the living room PC we game on and

5:49

connecting to our servers. If you also

5:52

have one, you might know they can be a

5:54

bit janky and don't always work

5:55

perfectly. If this thing can improve on

5:57

those even a little bit, it'll be great.

5:59

Regardless, it will get framework in

6:01

front of more people, which is a good

6:02

thing. Another product they announced is

6:04

their new laptop bag for the 12-in and

6:06

13-in frameworks. The black one looks

6:09

fine, pretty boring, whatever. But the

6:11

silver one, which I think they're going

6:13

for like a spaceacuit look, really just

6:15

ends up looking like duct tape. I did

6:17

not like it, and I think it looks cheap.

6:19

All right, let's wrap. We like what

6:21

we're seeing here a lot. In the past,

6:24

framework laptops didn't make sense for

6:25

most people outside of techy land. The

6:27

modularity doesn't matter to everyone.

6:29

The laptops can look sort of

6:30

Frankenstein, and the chassis weren't

6:32

very stylish. Plus, they were just too

6:35

expensive. This pricing often negated

6:37

the whole value proposition of an

6:38

upgradeable laptop. What's the point of

6:40

a framework if it's cheaper to just buy

6:43

a regular laptop, sell it every 3 years,

6:45

and get a new one? But now we are seeing
