Well, I guess we knew this was coming,

0:01

but big changes are coming to the

0:03

service that Canada Post offers. 4

0:06

million addresses are going to be losing

0:07

doorstep delivery over the next 5 years,

0:10

and today we are learning which of the

0:11

areas are going to be changing first.

0:13

Tanya Fletcher is joining me now with I

0:15

think with a a map and all the details.

0:17

Tanya? Yeah, Sarah. So, as you

0:19

mentioned, we knew this was coming. Now,

0:20

we know exactly where with this first

0:21

wave. So, here's a look. 13 communities

0:24

right across the country. This

0:25

represents in total a combined 136,000

0:28

addresses that will be losing

0:30

door-to-door delivery in favor of these

0:32

community mailboxes. Um this will uh

0:34

transition will fully happen in 6 to 9

0:36

months. So, by the end of this year,

0:38

early 2027 is when that should be

0:40

complete. This is the first wave. You

0:42

mentioned that 4 million figure off the

0:43

top. That's how many addresses are left

0:46

in Canada that still have door-to-door

0:48

delivery. So, Canada Post says they're

0:50

phasing all of them out. This is the

0:52

first batch, and the remaining 4

0:53

million, as you say, will take over the

0:55

next 5 or so years to do that, to make

0:57

that change. And this is all, of course,

0:59

in response to the minister's

1:00

announcement. So, the federal government

1:02

in September said, "You know what,

1:03

Canada Post, you need need to make some

1:05

meaningful changes, so it's not a

1:07

continuing drain on taxpayers' dollars."

1:10

Canada Post today, we spoke with them.

1:12

They acknowledge that. They say there

1:13

are some big changes needed, and here's

1:15

why, in their words.

1:17

The the post office is losing money, and

1:20

we're now at a at a position where

1:23

um we're out of step with where

1:24

Canadians are at. But, I I'd say, if

1:26

you're worried about it, talk to any

1:28

friends or family or anybody you know

1:29

that already has a community mailbox.

1:31

Everything is under lock and key.

1:32

Everything is dry. If you go away for a

1:35

couple of days, your mail [snorts] isn't

1:37

sitting, you know, on your front, you

1:39

know, in a box in your front step.

1:42

So, he goes on to say about 80% of

1:45

packages do fit inside of these

1:47

community mailboxes. The remaining 20%

1:49

that don't fit, if they need a

1:51

signature, they'll still be delivered uh

1:53

to your doorstep. Otherwise, at a nearby

1:55

location for pickup, like is already

1:57

done with many um many parcels. There

1:59

will be an average of 16 households in

2:01

one of these community mailboxes. Um

2:03

they'll try to keep it nearby within the

2:05

community. The biggest challenge, he

2:07

says, is going to be the big urban city

2:09

centers. You know, those very dense

2:10

downtown cores. And that's why right

2:12

now, they're starting with more kind of

2:13

the suburban outlying areas where

2:15

they're um kind of more that traditional

2:17

say say crescents or or uh streets where

2:20

you might have the single uh family

2:22

homes. Uh that's where they're starting

2:24

now. The bigger challenge will be those

2:26

um denser downtown cores. They'll try to

2:28

figure out work with each municipality

2:30

on a one-by-one basis to try to figure

2:32

out where is best for these community

2:34

mailboxes to be accessible and safe, as

2:36

well, Sarah. So, how are [snorts] people

2:38

reacting to this? Yeah, well, we went to

2:40

West Vancouver on the North Shore here

2:41

in Metro Vancouver to talk to some

2:43

people. There was some um surprise and

2:45

also some concern from residents.

2:48

I had no idea.

2:50

Uh that's news to me. Um

2:52

that's sad, but uh not surprising,

2:54

actually. Well, I'm not happy, and I

2:56

think these people that older people,

2:58

older than me,

3:00

that have a hard time.

3:01

>> Most of the mail now today, in today's

3:05

world, is all digital.

3:07

>> I understand the difficulties and the

3:09

financial problems of Canada Post and

3:11

the changing society, but if we're going

3:13

to offer this service, we still need to

3:15

make it accessible for all demographics.

3:18

That includes people with disabilities

3:21

and senior citizens.

3:23

Not surprisingly, perhaps, the union

3:25

doesn't like these changes. The Canadian

3:27

Union of Postal Workers saying they

3:28

don't like it. They're deeply concerned.

3:30

Part of their statement uh with regards

3:32

to the transition to these community

3:33

mailboxes, uh they say, "Canada Post

3:36

claims this is a modernization effort."

3:38

Statement goes on to say, "We fail to

3:40

see how such a service cut will allow

3:42

Canada Post to compete with private

3:44

companies that offer door-to-door

3:46

delivery." Um the union wants a full

3:47

review of Canada Post to make sure it is

3:49

fulfilling its mandate to Canadians,

3:52

Sarah. Okay, Tanya. Thank you.

3:54

>> You bet.
